1/5. Polymicrobial tenosynovitis with pasteurella multocida and other gram negative bacilli after a Siberian tiger bite.

    Mammalian bites present a considerable clinical problem because they are often associated with bacterial infections. pasteurella multocida is a microorganism that commonly infects both canine and small feline bites. Zoonotic infections developing after large feline bites have been recognised, although their reports are limited. We describe a 35 year old man who was bitten by a Siberian tiger and who developed infectious tenosynovitis secondary to P multocida, Bergeyella (Weeksella) zoohelcum, and Gram negative bacteria most like CDC group EF-4b and comamonas species. The latter three bacteria have not been isolated previously from large feline bite wounds.

2/5. acinetobacter calcoaceticus infection following a dog bite.

    A frequent complication of dog bite wounds is bacterial infection. The choice of antibiotics is based upon the most likely organisms. Failure to achieve wound healing suggests that an uncommon organism(s) is present and should lead the clinician to culture the wound. A case of acinetobacter calcoaceticus infection following a dog bite is described.

3/5. Infection with CDC group DF-2 gram-negative rod: report of two cases.

    Two patients had bacteremia with Center for disease Control group DF-2 Gram-negative rods. Previously described patients infected with this organism had clinical syndromes including cellulitis, meningitis, and endocarditis, and generally were severely ill. One of our patients had acute oligoarticular arthritis. The other had fever, headache, malaise, and a generalized rash. In neither case was bacterial infection considered likely at onset, and neither patient received antibiotic therapy. Both patients recovered completely. The organism is a fastidious Gram-negative rod that only recently has been characterized. methods for isolating and identifying the organism are reviewed. The spectrum and frequency of illnesses caused by this organism are probably greater than previously recognized.

4/5. Simian bites and bacterial infection.

    Three patients with simian bites and resultant infection are described. The bacteriology of the wounds was diverse and included alpha-hemolytic streptococci and other streptococci in all wounds, enterococci, staphylococcus epidermidis, and enterobacteriaceae. A literature review revealed brief mentions of 132 cases of simian bites in some of which bacteroides species, fusobacterium species, and eikenella corrodens were isolated. Infection, despite antimicrobial therapy, and complications, such as osteomyelitis and flexion contractures, occurred frequently.

5/5. Eosinophilic panniculitis: diagnostic considerations and evaluation.

    BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic panniculitis is characterized by a prominent infiltration of subcutaneous fat with eosinophils. It has been identified in patients who have a variety of associated clinical conditions. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe clinical conditions associated with eosinophilic panniculitis. methods: We describe five patients with eosinophilic panniculitis. These patients had a variety of clinical conditions including arthropod bites, gnathostomiasis, and polyarteritis nodosa. We review the literature on patients with eosinophilic panniculitis. RESULTS: Eosinophilic panniculitis most often presents as a nodule. gnathostomiasis, leukocytoclastic vasculitis, and erythema nodosum appear to be the most common conditions associated with eosinophilic panniculitis. Other disorders include atopic and contact dermatitis, eosinophilic cellulitis, injection granuloma, arthropod bites, streptococcal and other bacterial infections, toxocariasis, B- and T-cell lymphoma, and refractory anemia with excess blasts. CONCLUSION: Once a diagnosis of eosinophilic panniculitis has been established, appropriate evaluation for an associated clinical condition should be performed.
