1/28. Fixed prosthodontics in skeletal Class III patients with partially edentulous jaws and age-related prognathism: the basal osseointegration procedure.

Today, prognathism in the partially or completely edentulous jaw can be treated with endosteal implants and fixed prostheses. The preferred procedure uses basal osseointegration. If the distribution of available bone is favorable, the prosthodontic suprastructures can be loaded early, taking the various phases of bone regeneration into account. Invasive surgical interventions, specifically iliac crest transplants, are rarely indicated and can be avoided in most cases. patients are able to return to their everyday lives within a few days.

2/28. tooth wear and loss: symptomatological and rehabilitating treatments.

The authors report a clinical case that presented tooth wear and absence, with painful muscular and articular symptomatology, and also alteration in deglutition, mastication and speech. The clinical procedures used were re-establishment of vertical dimension of occlusion, mandibular centric relations, and occlusal contacts through therapeutic removable partial dentures. The condyle position was analyzed in habitual occlusion and in occlusion with dentures, through transcranial radiographs of the temporomandibular joints. Oral rehabilitation was achieved with dental restoration and removable partial dentures.

3/28. Occlusal reconstruction of a collapsed bite by orthodontic treatment, pre-prosthetic surgery and implant supported prostheses. A case report.

The loss of mandibular molars can result in a 'collapsed bite' owing to tilting of teeth adjacent to the gap and overeruption of maxillary molar segments. The lost interarch and interdental space must be regained before prosthetic reconstruction. This case report documents the treatment of a patient by orthodontic, surgical and prosthetic means. The teeth were orthodontically aligned to meet predetermined surgical and prosthetic requirements. The surgical phase comprised a posterior segmental maxillary osteotomy and one-stage placement of three large-diameter implants in the mandible. Finally, the occlusion was restored with mandibular implant-supported prostheses.

4/28. Traumatic overbite: a restorative solution.

Deep overbite is frequently seen in the adult dentition. Although the condition is usually asymptomatic, certain factors may lead to the development of deep traumatic overbite, and in partially dentate patients loss of posterior occlusal support may be a contributory factor. Several treatment modalities, including orthodontics, orthognathic surgery and prosthodontics have been used but, as some adult patients with this problem are unwilling to avail themselves of treatment involving either orthodontics or orthognathic surgery, a restorative approach using a combination of fixed and removable restorations may provide a satisfactory solution. This paper details a case report on the restorative management of a partially dentate adult patient with a deep traumatic overbite.

5/28. Maxillary and mandibular overlay removable partial dentures for the treatment of posterior open-occlusal relationship: a clinical report.

This clinical report describes the use of maxillary and mandibular overlay removable partial dentures to treat a patient with class III skeletal malocclusion and a posterior open-occlusal relationship. Overlay removable partial denture therapy was used as an alternative to other options such as orthodontics and combined orthodontic/oral surgery procedures; it satisfied the esthetic and functional requirements of the patient and provided a stable occlusion. Overlay removable partial dentures are a reversible and relatively inexpensive treatment for patients with congenital or acquired anomalies, but the potential disadvantages of these prostheses include compromised esthetics when the dentures are removed; caries and periodontal disease as a result of poor oral hygiene; and veneer material fracture, debonding, discoloration, and wear.

6/28. Histologic findings at augmented bone areas supplied with two different bone substitute materials combined with sinus floor lifting. Report of one case.

This case report is focused on the histologic findings of bone tissue supplied with two different hydroxyapatites (HAs) used for maxillary sinus floor grafting in the same patient after various healing intervals. An insufficient unilateral sinus floor grafting with Bio-Oss biomaterial was followed by an additional grafting procedure with Algipore biomaterial performed 4 years later. Bone samples obtained during second-stage dental implantation contained the interesting combination of Bio-Oss, a bovine anorganic bone substitute, and Algipore, a porous algae-derived HA, in close vicinity, yet after different healing periods. light microscopy exhibited satisfactory osseointegration of both grafting materials. However, Bio-Oss biomaterial showed no evidence of substantial remodeling after a healing period of 4.5 years. On the other hand, Algipore particles demonstrated signs of remodeling by being locally resorbed and partially replaced with newly formed bone already within 6 months.

7/28. Esthetic re-creation of soft tissue architecture in replacing missing maxillary anterior teeth.

Replacing missing maxillary anterior teeth while providing an adequate esthetic can present a considerable challenge. A substantial effort is directed toward achieving a better tooth-to-soft tissue relationship, regardless of whether the restorative modalities are implants, naturally supported fixed bridges, or removable partial dentures. The interdental papilla is critical to the esthetically pleasant architecture and contributes to successful harmonious restoration, especially in patients with a high smile. There are several techniques for restoring the indental papilla. The best result comes from careful planning and good communication with the patient.

8/28. An aid to the management of xerostomia in the partially dentate patient.

xerostomia is becoming more frequently encountered, often in relation to the use of pharmacological agents. This paper describes the management of a patient with xerostomia, both in terms of her dry mucosa and the difficulties in constructing new dentures.

9/28. Clinical application of a new cone-beam computerized tomography system to assess multiple two-dimensional images for the preoperative treatment planning of maxillary implants: case reports.

Accurate assessment of the location of the maxillary sinuses, incisive canal, and nasal cavity, as well as the height, width, and angulation of bone is essential for implant treatment planning. The purpose of this study was to introduce the clinical application of a cone-beam computerized tomography system (Ortho-CT) to assess multiple two-dimensional (2D) images for the preoperative treatment planning of maxillary implants. To evaluate the multiple 2D images scanned using the Ortho-CT system the maxillary region placed with radiopaque template in the maxilla. Ortho-CT images provided useful information for evaluating the morphology of the maxilla, for locating the incisive canal, maxillary sinuses, nasal cavity, and for showing the relationship of the template to the bone. It is concluded that the Ortho-CT system is a useful aid for diagnosis and treatment planning for maxillary implant treatment.

10/28. rehabilitation of partially edentulous patient with loss of vertical dimension.

A case of rehabilitation of an edentulous patient with loss of vertical dimension is presented here. This patient presents with a Class III dental and skeletal malocclusion with an anterior cross-bite. The objective of this case report is to demonstrate that an accurate assessment of vertical dimension is necessary for good rehabilitation. The original vertical dimension was determined by a series of tests including, kinesiographic, electromyographic and transcutaneous electronic neural stimulation (TENS). Subsequently, the lost vertical dimension was re-established orthodontically. These examinations revealed a general hypertonicity of masticatory muscles due to the lost vertical dimension. Additionally, radiographs of the temporomandibular joint showed anteriorly displaced condyles. Following the completion of orthodontic treatment osseointegrated implants were placed to restore the dental arches.
