1/5. candida lusitaniae as an unusual cause of recurrent vaginitis and its successful treatment with intravaginal boric acid.

Increasing use of short-course antifungal therapies in patients with recurrent vulvovaginitis may enable the emergence of less-common, more resistant yeast strains as vaginal pathogens. We report the case of a patient with chronically symptomatic and repeatedly treated vaginal candidiasis whose infection was attributable to candida lusitaniae, a previously unreported cause of candidal vaginitis.

2/5. candida meningitis in a suspected immunosuppressive patient--a case report.

meningitis due to fungal agents represents an AIDS-defining event and occurs typically with very low CD4 lymphocyte count. candida meningitis is still a rare clinical condition, although it is becoming frequently reported in the background of immune suppressive states such as: drug addicts, cancer patients, organ transplant recipients and hiv/AIDS patients. In this report we highlight a case of candida meningitis, in a 25- year old female patient. She presented with vulva swelling, vaginal discharge and fever, with rapid progression to tonic-clonic convulsions and loss of consciousness. She fully recovered after treatment with fluconazole.

3/5. Placental and fetal candidiasis. Presentation of a case of an abortus.

The authors present a case of intrauterine fetal infection by candida, in an abortion of four months, associated with an I.U.D. In the placenta and adnexa we observed an acute inflammation consisting of extraplacental membranitis, omphalitis, chorio-amnionitis and choriovasculitis with a marked villitis and intervillitis. In the fetus, involvement of the skin, lungs and pharynx was observed. This case represents, probably the 15th reported instance of congenital fetal candidiasis, and the first case of a candida hematogenic placental infection acquired from the fetal blood. The fetus undoubtedly acquired its infection by an ascending route, through the contamined amniotic fluid.

4/5. Treatment off vulvovaginal candidal infection with miconazole-coated tampons.

In an evaluation of three different treatment regimens miconazole-coated tampons proved to be effective for the relief of vulvovaginal candidal infection. A mycological and clinical cure rate of about 93% was achieved in patients treated with one tampon twice daily (up to a total of 15 tampons); 61% of patients were mycologically cured with a regimen of one tampon daily for only five days. Reinfection rates were less than 4% with all three regimens. The tampons were well accepted by all the patients.

5/5. Congenital cutaneous candidiasis associated with respiratory distress and elevation of liver function tests: a case report and review of the literature.

We describe congenital cutaneous candidiasis (CCC) in a term newborn. The mother had candidal vaginitis 1 week before delivery. At birth, the infant had a generalized, intensely erythematous, papulovesicular eruption, respiratory distress and elevation of liver function tests. The child responded well to intravenous amphotericin b plus topical and oral nystatin. There have been 13 previously reported cases of CCC in infants weighing more than 1500 gm who had evidence of systemic infection. Two deaths were attributed to candidal pneumonia and sepsis. The majority of infants with CCC have infection localized to the skin, but if there is any evidence of respiratory distress or signs of sepsis the possibility of systemic candidiasis and the need for parenteral antifungal therapy must be considered.
