what are the symptoms of guillain-barre syndrome?

The person must first suffer from a viral illness (ex. Epstien-Barr) or infection. A couple weeks after that, there is numbness and tingling starting in the feet/legs or hands. The person may then experience ascending paralysis as the syndrome continues. The danger is if or when the paralysis reaches the diaphragm level, at which time the patient will need a respirator to help him breathe. The brain is not affected.

Surprisingly, the patient can recover full use of limbs, but the recovery process is long-- months to years.  (+ info)

Could it be Guillain Barre Syndrome?

On the 8th of Sept, i went to the Asthma clinic for a check up and i told the nurse that i had been feeling tired and struggled to walk for a while without stopping for a breath, so they gave me a course of steroids.
Took them for 5 days and finished the course, The fifth day i had pins and needles in my feet, as the night went on i didn't feel better i made a appointment for the doc and while i was there i felt a little light headed then i couldn't feel my arms and hands i couldnt move my fingers, and i couldn't feel my lips. All my tests came back normal although i did have high white blood cells, but nothing to cause concern, the hospital thought it was a reaction to the steroids but my local doctor is sending me to get checked for Guillain Barre,

It's a month later and i still can't walk far as i feel my legs could buckle at the knee, i still get the tingle in my legs feet, arms and hands, i can't even use a knife to cut dinner if it's something like chicken or stew, and sleeping is hard coz my body feels as if it tingles when i lye on my side

thanx for reading this

Your doctor is being thorough.
It does sound typical of Guillain-Barre syndrome.

There are other autoimmune diseases, either muscles, nerves or the central nervous system being attacked. The symptoms can be similar

I hope you can rest and there is someone to help you. Stress and anxiety can make all physical symptoms worse.

There is one other option below which is ?auto immune or ?genetic in origin, but there is no point in going through the 'it might be' ones.
Trust your doctor. Good luck  (+ info)

i am learning to walk after paraylisis from guillain barre syndrome any tips?

my knees give way, my balance is terrible, i have no feeling in my feet at all, i just need some tips
----------

hi again sweetheart. try standing up and increasing your standing tolerance first. the point in that is if you do that it stops your legs from going into spasm and improves your muscle. try timing yourself and improve on the time every time you do it. another good thing is go swimming im sorry about the fool who told you to cut yourself iv reported him and sent him a piece of my mind you need support not idiots telling you this. if you want anymore advice just email me OK and IL be happy to do so. iv been disabled for33 years now with arthritis and find it very hard to walk but i have one last message for you. NEVER GIVE IN YOU CAN DO IT HARD WORK AND LOT OF EXERCISE. maybe getting some type of knee brace to give you extra support and it helps your knees from giving way.  (+ info)

Current A(H1N1) or Swine Flu deadly specially if you have Guillain Barre Syndrome?

I used to be paralyzed from Guillain Barre. I can walk now and all, but I'm not sure if it would come back especially if I get Swine Flu.

I've been absent in school for around 10 days because my school doesn't want to suspend despite the number of cases (25).

I went to school today, and just found out one of my absent classmates has swine flu but didn't go to school when she had symptoms.

So that is my issue now and I just wanna know if having [a history of] GBS makes Swine Flu deadly/severe. Or if GBS would come back if I get the flu

Have your sister inlaw go to social services and apply for a.f.d.c. (aide for dependant children). They will quailify for both food stamps and cash aide and this will help them pay the bills. Also, if your family is affiliated with a church, there is a special fund for needy families called a "benevolent fund". This is also an option. Try calling your local "Salvation Army" as well. They often will help pay utility bills (once every two years, i believe) in times such as this. God Bless your brother and family!  (+ info)

I had Guillain-Barre syndrome less than a year ago. I am fully recovered. Can I now DONATE BLOOD??

Regrettably you cannot. The G-B syndrome takes at least two years to disappear from the blood, and is transmittable. It's admirable that you want to donate blood but maybe wait for another year. Is it true that in America you can get money for your blood because in Australia it's totally voluntary.  (+ info)

Mum has had 2 minor attack of GBS and it took her a long time to make a full recovery, so keep going you will get there.
