What's the difference between an aneurysm, a pulmonary embolism, and a stroke?

O.K. So, an aneurysm can cause a stroke?

And what if I deleted "pulmonary" from the embolism... can an embolism occur anywhere in the body?
And in turn, then, can an embolism lead to a stroke also?
I'm just confused because a lot of people seem to use the terms interchangeably. Thanks for your responses.
----------

Aneurysm...bulge in a weak spot of the wall of a blood vessel...usually in the aorta or brain. If these burst they can cause death pretty rapidly...I do not think an aneurysm will cause a stroke.

Stroke is caused by a clot or embolism in a blood vessel in the brain.

Pulmonary embolism is a blockage in the pulmonary artery leading to the lungs...a blot clot could cause this.

Your confusion possibly arises form the use of the word embolism which is basically another word for clot. They use embolism when referring to a piece of cholesterol/plaque that has broken off and travelled through a blood vessel and caused a blockage. An embolism in the brain would lead to a stroke , and an embolism in the lung artery would lead to breathing difficulties. As far as I know you dont get embolism with an aneurysm. With aneurysms you get an enlarged blood vessel that can burst if not treated. If it bursts it can bleed out very rapidly into surrounding cavities and cause death in a few minutes if its the aorta that bursts.  (+ info)

My dad had spine surgery due to the surgery he got massive blood clots in his leg and pulmonary embolism and is unable to work for 9 months. What is he supposed to do without money? He is a part owner of the company. The company had to lay off all the employees due to the money shortage. The company isn't making money. Is there any other suggestions?
----------

The first condition you have to meet to qualify for disability is to have an impairment that prevents you from working for at least 1 year. It does not sound like that is the case in his situation. If he is over 50 he should go talk to the SS office. Depending on his past work and the results of his back surgery, there may be something they can do.  (+ info)

Pulmonary Embolism: What are the chances of a good outcome?

I've been a rather pessimistic person all my life, but for the past few years I have been the total opposite, and have been very optimistic.

This morning, I went to the doctors office with my grandmother where they said she would be fine, they caught whatever illness early. Then within 3 hours, I receive a call - she's in the ER and this minor illness turned out to be a blood clot in her lung. Later, we receive another call that made it sound like things weren't getting any better. I am relying that those taking care of her will do all they can manage to do, I trust their skill and education with my grandmother - but I do not want to ignore the likelihood of the situation - what are the chances of a good outcome of Pulmonary Embolism?

I've already been doing research since we learned what the issue was, and learned that it is the third greatest killer of hospitalized patients, which did not make me feel any better, but I have accepted it.

Thank you for any help and information you can provide me.

Hello there, I am sorry to hear about your grandma.

This can be a very life threatening illness, but if caught in time, then should be treated, they will need to give her injections and treatments for a few months to thin the blood hence breaking down the blood clot.

I know how your Grandma feels right now, I have been in hospital with suspected PE before.

If it helps, I work in the hospital and have heard of a fair few patients who have suffered with a PE before, yet survived, some of these patients have even had a PE twice!

Good luck make sure you visit her as much as you can. That was all I wanted when I was in hospital. My family to make me feel safer.  (+ info)

how can I best prevent pulmonary embolism if I have a deep vein thrombosis?

I've been nursing a severe sprain for 2 weeks and harbor all the symptoms of thrombosis, but am home alone with no phone. My closest neighbor is hundreds if not thousands of feet away and like I said, severe sprain...

You obviously have the email facility as you are on the internet?? Which means that you should contact your Doctor or local Hospital, they will be able to help you and give advice.
I would most certainly swallow an ASPIRIN at least, in the meantime.
Hope you resolve this safely and healthily.  (+ info)

Does anyone know about the respiratory disease called Pulmonary Embolism?

Because my boyfriend was just diagnosed and hes very sick and they said it is a lot of the time fatal and i am so worried, so scared =[ please tell me anything you know about it and if you or anyone you know has it and if they made it because I need to know.
----------

A Pulmonary Embolism is when a blood clot travels from somewhere else in the body to the lungs and gets lodged there, and yes it can be fatal. It is treated with a clot buster called Heparin. After he recovers he will more than likely be placed on blood thinners called Coumadin/Warfarin and will have to have bloodtests periodically to make sure his INR is within a good range to prevent further clots.

Has he had any surgeries lately? Does he have any blood clotting disorder himself or in his family? There is a disorder called Antiphospholipid Syndrome he could be checked for, also Factor V Leiden. Both are diseases where your blood is too thick and clots too easily.

I am sure he will be fine now that they have discovered and are treating him.  (+ info)

Is it normal to feel exhausted after a Pulmonary Embolism?

I had pe last week and now I feel totally exhausted and my shoulders hurt. I am wondering if this is normal. Can anyone help me?
----------

Yes, yes, and yes. You have suffered a tremendous health problem to your body. There is a website called WebMD and it is wonderful to do research on just about any condition. I would strongly suggest that you do some research about this and you should also discuss this with your physician and tell them everything that you are feeling that you don't normally feel and anything different since the embolism. Remember the life you save may be your own.  (+ info)

What Is The Difference Between A Coronary Embolism And A Pulmonary Embolism?

Embolism is passage of a blood clot from one region of the circulation to another. Coronary embolism means the clot lodges in the coronary arteries of the heart. Usual source of clot will be the left atrium or ventricle.

Pulmonary embolism means the clot lodges in the pulmonary arteries of the lung. The usual source will be the deep veins of the legs or pelvis. Rarely it can originate from the right atrium or ventricle.  (+ info)

is there a relationship between hormonal pills and pulmonary embolism?

Hormonal pills were prescribed and taken for weeks for perimenopausal bleeding caused by uterine myoma. Hysterectomy was done when the bleeding won't stop. Developed pulmonary embolism post-op.
----------

I agree with Nurse Tina... pulmonary embolisms usually occur after surgerical procedures. you really need to follow up with your physician, especially if you are still bleeding.  (+ info)
