What's the best way to deal with arthritis in the knees?

I may have arthritis in my knees (still waiting for x-ray results). How can I continue to actively participate in sports and exercise without causing further damage. Right now, I can't bend or go up a flight of stairs without pain.
----------

I had a very swollen left knee last yr. It kept me in pain a lot of the time. It got so bad I could hardly walk without pain. I went to see a Specialist and he took a MRI. The knee showed arthritis behind the knee cap. The surgeon said that all he could do was to give me a cortisone shot in my knee,. This worked wonderfully and I no longer have pain or swelling. Its been over a yr. already and my knee is still painless. Cocoa  (+ info)

What are some good natural remedies to help stop the progression of arthritis?

I'm not sure what kind of arthritis I have. I always assumed that it was osteoarthritis because I don't have any disfigured joints. However, after reading more about rheumatoid arthritis, I wonder if I have that. My joints all over are stiff and achy and my fingers are puffy. I heard that fish oil is good. How much of this can I safely take? What about other supplements? Thanks!
----------

Natural remedies for arthritis offer a real alternative for people who desire to avoid the potential side effects of over-the-counter as well as prescription anti-inflammatory drugs such as Vioxx, Celebrex, Bextra and others. Sometimes the side effects of drugs can be worse than the original symptoms. For example, Vioxx and Bextra, were pulled from the market due to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and lethal skin conditions.

The most attractive consideration of many natural arthritis remedies is that they are safe, and have not been shown to cause any strange side effects, like some of those caused by pharmaceuticals.

Here are five of the more popular natural remedies for arthritis:

1) Glucosamine & Chondroitin are two of the more popular arthritis relief supplements. These are found naturally in the body, and as a supplement, they can aid in promoting good joint health and reliable joint repair.

2) MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur compound that behaves as an anti-inflammatory. MSM can reduce swelling in the same way that many arthritis medications are designed to do, but without the side effects of putting pharmaceutical chemicals into your body.

3) Manganese is an important antioxidant nutrient that has been shown to facilitate enzymes and slow the aging process. It is useful in the effective treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

4) Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) has been shown to be effective in the maintenance of the integrity of cells and tissues, which will slow the progression of arthritis in most people.

5) Turmeric and Ginger Extract are two powerful anti-inflammatory herbal extracts that have been shown to be more effective than NSAIDs in the treatment of the rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.

These natural arthritis remedies offer lots of hope and promise for the relief of the painful symptoms of arthritis. Recent medical scientific studies have suggested that each of these five remedies work well alone, but work better when used in tandem.  (+ info)

What type of mattress would be best for rheumatiod arthritis?

My fiance has rheumatiod arthritis in his feet and ankles and in the back. He tosses and turns almost every night to where it keeps him up and also me. We are going to look for a mattress this week. Should we look more deeply into firm or soft mattress'?
----------

I think you should get a memory foam mattress. Most people sleep restlessly on their sides instead of sleeping soundly on their backs. Memory foam mattresses will solve this problem because the memory foam supports the whole body weight distribution that sleeping on your back is meant to provide.

How do I get tested for Rhumatoid arthritis?

Arthritis runs in my Mother's side of the family. I just turned 30 years old & I've been noticing I have pretty severe aches & pains throughout my body from time to time. The pains & aches will not stay in one spot though. One month my ankle will be aching then the next it would be my hip area. My aunt (my Mother's sister) was diagnosed with Rhumatoid Arthritis about 4 years ago, so I know what it can do but how do I know if that might be what I am experiencing?

Omega3 helps preventing arthritis.

Check this info:

"One of the benefits of fish oil is the effect that it has on arthritis. Arthritis can be a painful and debilitating condition and finding effective treatments for the condition has been like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Thankfully, Omega 3 seems to be having a positive effect on treating the pain, inflammation and stiffness of the arthritis condition. "

What is the best method in relieving arthritis in the lower back that causes pain throughout the legs?

I have severe pain in my lower back which travels into my legs .
I have taken MRI's which showed i do have arthritis . The doctors keep telling me that it is becuase of the arthritis that i have this pain in my legs. Could it be something else?.. and What can i do to eleviate the pain?
I have been taking Pain meds . I have taken everything and nothing really helps except of course Vicodens but they are addicting and i took them so long that even those are not helping so i stopped .. that was another problem and another story! ..but i have had 2 ,3series shots of epidurals ..i havebeen to physical therapy which is nioce but the pain returns as soon as i leave the office .. I am now searching for a good chiropractor ..
----------

Oh my Nikki, I am so sorry, because I know the exact pain you are speaking of.
Heres where this answer gets complicated and almost unbelievable........For 2 yr after I had MRI's done for the exact same symptoms I was told the exact same about the arthritis, by 2 differant doctors, an Orthopedist and a GP. As my leg and hip pain worsened I finally ended up in the ER, and was told by an ER Doc who saw my MRI on the hospital computer that I clearly had a herniated disc and it had herniated into my sciatic nerve. Mind you this is the only MRI I have ever had.
The ER doctor, told me that for some reason Orhthopedist don't like to diagnose disc problems like this because the don't like to do the surgery. The ER doctor called in a Neurosurgeon and I was in surgery the next day to remove the disc, which actually "blew up" it was so big. In the recovery room I felt 80 percent better, however, I am now on total disablity due to Permanent Sciatic Nerve damage. I have to go to Pain Mangement Clinic, and physical therapy and my life is totally and forever changed. I'm 43.
Please, Please, Please see a Neurosurgeon and have them look over your MRI. An arthretic back does not cause the leg pain you describe it is your sciatic nerve and I am sorry, I can't tell you anything to alieviate your pain that you aren't already doing except increase your pain meds temporarily. You needent worry about addiction rightnow with the pain you are in the meds go directly to the pain. As long as you take them as prescribed you have nothing to fear. If you don't you just may end up taking meds in the future and forever.
Feel free to E Mail me if you have questions and I honestly hope that you find relief for your pain soon, I know the misery you are in right now.
P.S. I would steer clear of any Chiropractors right now!!!!!  (+ info)

When should I be worried about my 1 month old possibly having Rheumatoid Arthritis?

My husbands niece just found out she has Rheumatoid Arthritis & my husbands dad has it also. My father-in-law just told me his dad had some form of Arthritis. When should I be concerned if my son has it? When can they start tests to see if has it? Thanks in advance for your answers!
----------

I would not start testing your son right now (or in the immediate future.) arthritis can show up at any time, but it's not detectable ahead of time. Instead be aware of the symptoms of arthritis: pain, redness, swelling, and/or heat concentrated in the joints; stiffness in the morning, or long periods of inactivity; reduced range of motion in the joints; general signs of being unwell (lethargy, reduced appetite, etc.) Joint symptoms with RA are usually symmetrical. It most commonly occurs in the hands, but can occur in other joints as well. If your kids does start showing those symptoms, try to get an appt. with a rheumatologist *quickly.* If necessary, giving your GP a list of symptoms, a family history, and a request for a referral should get you to a rheumy fairly promptly.  (+ info)

How to find comfort when suffering from arthritis?

My mother has arthritis in both knees. Her cartilage has worn out and now she suffers from severe pain in both of her knees. She is already taking prescription medications for it which don't seem to help. She took shots in both of her knees to help with the pain but after a few months it wears off.

If you are suffering from very bad arthritis and you get relief somehow, please do share with me how you get relief.
----------

She needs referral to an orthopaedic surgeon who will assess her pain and the arthritic damage to her knees. She may need joint replacements or keyhole surgery. Sometimes steroid injections help but they often wear off. A physiotherapist will teach her exercises that may help - swimming is a good way of keeping your joints supple. Also see:

can you have rheumatoid arthritis without it showing up in blood work?

I have rheumatoid arthritis like symptoms, but have a lot of blood work and nothing shows up. Is it possible it not be in the blood. It hasn't been a year yet, it started about June or July sometime around there. I am 14 if that means anything. I have also been diagnosed with fabry disease, both clinically and genetically.
----------

In short yes.

Arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, is difficult to diagnose, because there is not a single test that works for everyone. There are also a number of other conditions and factors that can explain differences in blood test results, so even if you show a high C-Reactive Protein Levels, for example, this doesn't necessarily mean you have arthritis.

Since there is no single test, doctors usually preform a number of different tests, as well as looking at the symptoms of the patient. In many cases, it also isn't that they are testing for arthritis specifically, but rather that they are testing for other similar conditions to rule them out.

As far as your age goes, people of all ages can develop arthritis, but it is more common among the elderly. However, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis does occur.  (+ info)
