----------

Sunny,
Current evidence suggests that alopecia areata is caused by an abnormality in the immune system. This particular abnormality leads to autoimmunity. As a result, the immune system attacks particular tissues of the body. In alopecia areata, for unknown reasons, the body's own immune system attacks the hair follicles and disrupts normal hair formation. Biopsies of affected skin show immune cells inside of the hair follicles where they are not normally present. What causes this is unknown. Alopecia areata is sometimes associated with other autoimmune conditions such as allergic disorders, thyroid disease, vitiligo, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. Sometimes, alopecia areata occurs within family members, suggesting a role of genes and heredity. Treatment is not mandatory because the condition is benign, and spontaneous remissions and recurrences are common. Treatments used are believed to stimulate hair growth, but no evidence indicates they can influence the ultimate natural course of alopecia areata. Treatment modalities usually are considered first according to the extent of hair loss and the patient's age. Assessment of the efficacy of a treatment must be considered with care because the condition is highly unpredictable in presentation, evolution, and response to treatment. Little data exist regarding the natural evolution of the condition. The high spontaneous remission rate makes clearly assessing the true efficacy of a therapy difficult unless appropriate controls with placebo treatment are studied. Because alopecia areata is believed to be an autoimmune condition, different immunomodulators have been used to treat this condition. Additional treatment options for alopecia areata include minoxidil and other treatment modalities.

Does onion juice or aloe vera actually work in improving alopecia areata?

This treatment is for a teenager I know. i think she's just 14 years.
----------

Alopecia areata is considered an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles. Thus causing the hair loss.

I can't see how onion juice or aloe vera could help with this, and I can't find any studies that would support their use for alopecia.

However, that doesn't mean they won't help. And perhaps the hair loss is more eczema related and aloe may actually help in that respect. Onion juice and aloe vera are generally well tolerated, so it probably won't hurt to try.

If the alopecia has been clinically diagnosed, I would recommend she sticks with the doctor's advice for best results.  (+ info)

What does anyone know about alopecia areata?

If the balding isnt this condition, what could it be?
----------

alopecia areata is well defined bald patches that occur. The bald areas are usually round or oval and are located on the head or other hairy parts of the body and often clears in 6-12 months without treatment. Recurrences are common and normal. Can be caused by many different reasons like normal aging, endocrine disorder, drug reaction, anticancer medications, stress or skin disease. There are many different types of alopecia also. Hope I have answered your questions.  (+ info)

What is the best treatment for Alopecia-Areata?

I have alpecia-areata, and it is really, really bad. There's patches all over my head, and it's getting harder and harder to cover them up everyday. I feel like giving up all my dreams and just getting homeschooled, my family doesn't even have medical insurance...theres just too much stuff going on in my life..
How can I regrow my hair?
Please..

Thanks a lot.

Sometimes less is more. A pair of clippers and a scalp razor together cost less than $20, and a chrome dome is better than looking mangy. I also suspect that your stressing over your condition might make matters worse, and taking the pressure off might do some good. By the way, there's still a remnant of funding for states to provide insurance for minors at very low cost--my niece has it in CA.  (+ info)

What are the chances of alopecia areata universalis curing itself?

Just wondering.
----------

It is very unpredictable and varies person to person. But regardless, the hair follicles remain alive, so there is always a chance the hair will grow back. In fact, it can grow back and fall out again and again.  (+ info)

Any scientific studies to treat Alopecia Areata with natural ingredients that reduce side effects?

I started researching the subject after suffering from itchy and even burning scalp and refusing to take hormones to stimulate hair growth - I just don't believe in it any more.

Since it's an autoimmune disease, I think the source is stress or psychological state so besides working on that I'm looking for some natural hair loss treatment to go along with it...

Any advice?

Sharing information on this issue will be appreciated...

Thanks

Actually - there are. Surprisingly, I admit but I happened to read a blog post that referred me to 2 academic studies about treatments for alopecia areata (look at the source link below) - the first found positive results between aromatherapy treatment for alopecia areata and the second explored the relation between alopecia areata and hypnotherapeutic treatment.

I found it extremely interesting and it proves once more that western medicine and natural medicine should unite and not fight each other.

I hope it was helpful – let me know

Are teens with alopecia areata more at risk for things like depression, and eating disorders?

Are they more likely to get diagnosed with depression? An eating disorder such as bulimia?
----------

Short answer: Yes.
I have alopecia since age of 12 and it has been TOUGH! I am now in my early 30s. Nobody can tell that I have alopecia because I wear a pretty wig. But it's constantly on my mind.

My parents sent me off to boarding school at 13 shortly after losing all my hair. I was alone during the remainder of my teenage years to deal with it. Additionally I thought the hairlessness was caused by psychological issues (which was what our useless family doctor had said).

My response to the situation was to try to become 'perfect' in my looks in every other respect. Body, face, style.... I had a brief encounter with anorexia but snapped out of it before no serious damage was done.

Getting alopecia is EXTREMELY TOUGH for a women of any age, particularly on a teenager suffering from the usual teenage year insecurities.

All I can recommend is to BE THERE for your daughter and support her in whatever way seems the best to her. Don't force her to wear a wig or not wear one. Don't force her into situations where wearing a wig is complicated.

There is no cure for alopecia that is worth it. The cure is acceptance and self confidence. Being a Christian helps.  (+ info)

Anyone have the autoimmune disease alopecia areata?

I just found out I have it . OMG it has happened so fast. In just a few weeks it's went from one spot to over a dozen. My family tells me,"Well at least your not going to die from this." which I know but is really no comfort to me. I am hoping I can find somebody else that has a better insight on what I'm going through.
