What type of protein is good for someone who wants to work out?

Well someone told me today that there's a good type of protein and a bad type of protein. So is there a certain type of protein I should be having? And also, at Kroger today I saw a jar of protein powder (22 servings for $22) and it said Whey Protein. Is that a good buy?

Go for whey protein, its natural and is relatively cheap, you can get it at wal-mart or any health/nutrition store.  (+ info)

How much protein is in the average protein drink compared to milk?

I was wondering how much more protein is in the average protein drink compared to a glass of milk. Also, I was hoping for protein mix suggestions for a beginner user of supplements and where you can purchase the mix. Thanks.
----------

whether it's a pre-made drink or protein powder, there's usually about 20-30g per serving. personally, i'd go for the whey powder because it gives you the freedom to mix ingredients yourself. buy yourself a good blender and mix it up with fat free milk, yogurt, flax seeds, and fruits. you can get them for pretty cheap if you look at wal-mart or sam's club. try those out to get used to the taste and texture before looking for an expensive brand name.  (+ info)

How much protein should I take daily even if I am taking creatine?

What happens if I take too much protein, recommended for people trying to bulk up is 1-1.5grams of protein per pound of bodyweight. So if I am trying to gain a lot of muscle and am using creatine to help become bulker would I still be needing to eat 140g of protein a day (I weigh about 140 Lbs.)? Or would I just be needing regular 60g because I don't know if there is an effect with the protein and creatine.
----------

Hey Bro,
I'm not sure how you are taking your protein, but a couple of things to think about. Take it within 30 min of your workout for best results and absorption into your body and muscles. You may also need to spread out your quantity of protein, as the body absorbs about 20 grams at a time, if you do 60 all at once you are probably crapping some of it out.
I take a shake with 20 grams, twice a day.
The guys I get my protein from is below; they have a forum page with some great workout discussions and some good recipes for smoothies.
the choc flavor is the best.
Also attached a piece on creatine.
Good luck.  (+ info)

How much protein should I be taking for body building?

I've been body building for about 6 months now and I'm not sure how much protein I should be taking. Some people say about 30 grams a day and others say 1 gram / lb of weight.

I'm 6'3", 220 lbs with about 18% body fat (and going down).

The other thing is when I should be taking the protein? I do take the protein shortly after a workout session, but do I need to take more protein on the off days as well?
----------

You should be getting 1.5 - 2 grams of protein per lb of bodyweight. Protein consumption should be all day long with about 2.5 hours in between meals. Pre and post workout meals should be the most important. Drink plenty of water in conjunction with eating frequently throughout the day.  (+ info)

What protein bar is comparable in taste and nutrition as Isagenix bars?

I really really love the Isagenix protein bars (chocolate crunch! YUM! Tastes like a candy bar!), but they are so expensive. Are there any other protein bars out there that any of you have found that taste very similar to the Isagenix bars? Any that taste like them and have similar amounts of protein?
I just don't want to have to go out and spend tons of money on trying out new bars to see which one is the most similar if someone else has already found out which one is best!!

Thank you!
----------

I don't know about your bar, but i eat a nanotechnology gel that has 10 Grs. of Milk Serum Protein, this gel has a nice flavor of chocolate truffle or strawberry banana. This technology allows to put a bigger amount of protein in a smaller space.

This gel is the same tio eat a can of tuna fish. I train parkour and this boosts energy very well.

Should you want to know more about this product just contact me, i dont sell it but i can tell you how to get it in your country is easy and not too expensive.  (+ info)

What is the difference between plant protein and meat protein, if any?

I've been gradually reducing my meat intake in pursuit of becoming a vegetarian. I have zero support from family members in this matter and I am constantly being told by them that the protein I get from tofu or other vegetable product is not the same as a meat protein and that the body needs the protein derived from meat to be balanced. Is any of this true? Are vegetables and vegetable products not enough to get the type of protein a body needs - do I have to take some certain supplements to make up for the type of protein I'm not getting from meat?
----------

One difference is: The body uses the amino acids that make up protein. The body has to break down meat protein into amino acids to use them. Plants protein is already mostly broken down and more accessable.

Quote from Ole:
"Plants will never have all 9 essential ammino acids, so you need to make sure that you compliment tofu with other types of plant protein, gram for gram, you will also have to eat more of the plants to get the same amount of protein
Source(s):
college health class "

Where to start:

1. People need 8, not 9 amino acids
2. Tofu isn't God's gift to vegans. I haven't eaten it in 10 years.
3. No one eats just 1 food, so, with our disire for variety, we don't need to worry about balance .
4. Raw protein is twice as absorbable as cooked. Since animal protein is usually cooked, you need to eat LESS plant protein to equal meat.
5. I'm sorry that Oli took health class in the '70's, during the "protein obsession". A little knowledge was dangerous. Scientists later discovered the Amino acid pool and protein "recycling", which explains how Cows, chickens, gorillas, elephants, horses, AND humans, etc, can be vegans and be strong and healthy.  (+ info)

What protein supplements taste the least disgusting?

In my two years of vegetarianism, I haven't really put much effort into taking any sort of protein supplements, mostly because they all seem to taste like ass. I unusually just stick to lentils, beans, quinoa, and chickpeas ect. However, I'm trying to eat properly, and I'm looking to get more protein into my diet so its more balanced, (preferably in a low cal form) so I'm wondering, does anyone have any high protein suggestions that don't taste foul, are low cal, and are available in Australia?
----------

http://www.plantfusion.us/
is a relatively new one - non-soy protein blend. And holy cow it tastes ***good***!! (As in it doesn't even need fruit or something else to mask the flavor). I would think it could be shipped to Australia - though I don't know much about shopping from Australia, so can't say for sure.  (+ info)

What kind of protein shakes for a teenager?

I was wondering what kind (brand, type) of protein shakes a 15 year old teenage girl should be taking. My neice wanted some, but shes not crazy-athletic. She plays year round sports, but not school (town). SHe works out usually 1-3 times a week, nothing too extreme. She just wanted some protein shakes to take to help her get in shape/build muscle. Any suggestions on brands of protein shakes or what type of protein she should be taking?
----------

I would recommend a high quality chemical free whey product minus the fillers and additives. There is alot of whey products that contain tons of fillers and additives. Hope this helps!  (+ info)
