Will protein powder help me lose weight?

I'm a 225 lb teen so i kinda need to lose weight.I've been working out for a while but it hasn't really been working.I also have pcos and insulin resistance. Thank you and Have a nice day.

No. Protein assists muscles repairing themselves after excercise and makes them stronger. If you were working out enough, protein powder would increase you weight due to increased muscle mass.  (+ info)

If you're supposed to have your protein shake 1st thing in the morning, is it also ok to have your coffee?

I'm 5'8" and 135 lbs. I'm pretty fit and want to lean out my muscle, I know you're supposed to drink your shake first thing in the morning, and immediately after resistance training, but is it bad to drink my morning shake and have coffee right after?
----------

why don't you start your morning with coffee since caffeine helps with fatigue and then have your shake after your workout?  (+ info)

it is perfectly ok to take in extra protein in liquid form as that source of protein is usually relatively fat-free (as opposed to getting the same extra 30-60 grams of protein from a juicy but fat-filled steak) if you do take in liquid protein, just watch the calories. it is not the excess protein that will cause weight gain but the extra calories. if you figure about 10-12Xyour weight in pounds if you're a sedentary person and about 12-15Xyour weight in pounds if you're moderately active to figure out your daily caloric intake to maintain your weight. that means if you take in extra protein, you might have to cut carbs or fat to maintain your caloric intake. it will actiually be healthier to cut carbs than fat as there are essential fatty acids the the body needs and can't make on its own but no carbs are essential. however, fiber will help keep all that protein moving through the digestive tract as high protein intake requires extra water from your body and may cause extra reabsorbtion in the lower digestive tract leading to constipation (read: keep you regular an not tear you a new one) and keep your arteries clean. the main thing to make sure of is that your kidneys are healthy. for a healthy kidney, the extra nitrogenous waste such as urea and ammonia that is produced, the extra calcium found in many protein shakes and powders and the higher concentration of protein in the blood is not a problem or even close to threatening but for an unhealthy kidney the extra osmotic stress may further damage it. the extra protein may also help if you do aerobic workouts, providing muscles with an extra source of nutrients and protein so that they won't have to cannibalize themselves when your cortisol levels are elevated after a run, and may suppress cortisol levels.  (+ info)

Some questions to ask yourself and suggestions:

1 - Do you have a caloric excess in your diet? In other words, are you consuming more calories than you burn each day? You cannot gain muscle mass no matter how hard you workout, how much protein you eat unless you are consuming more food than you burn. Try to increase your eating and don't just eat protein, make sure you get lots of carbs.

2 - Are you continously increasing the weight you are using in your workouts every few weeks? You need to be pushing yourself further in an incremental way.

3 - Evaluate your routine. You didn't give enough detail on your workout. You should probably be working out 3 days a week, each day focusing on a group of muscles. Variety of excercises, low reps and high weight to gain mass.

4 - Cardio may be burning off the mass you would otherwise gain, evaluate cardio in your workouts, may be too much.

5 - Try free weights for curling, benchpress, and other fundamental excercises.  (+ info)

How much protein?

I'm female, in my early 30s, doing cardio exercise everyday (avg 45 mins), & resistance training 3x/week. Are protein shakes excessive or in order? I usually eat about 2 servings of varied protein each day, anything from cheese to beef. Also I've heard whey protein has the most bioavailable protein, but I've heard the same about egg white. Anyone know for sure? I've also heard contradictory information on whether or not protein is converted to fat if not used by the body. Any experts out there? Thanks:-)

First of all you are more than likely not getting enough protein at present. Sports scientists reccomend I think 1.2-1.7 grams of protein per pound of lean body weight each day is you are undertaking resistance training. This is more important since you are doing a lot of cardio (which will burn muscle if you aren't getting enough protein and/or doing too much).

If you have several small meals a day and include some source of protein in each you will also speed up your metabolism. Try and use as many protein sources as possible to do this. Whey does have the highest 'BV' or biological value, but other sources such as cottage cheese, meat and eggs are also good and tend to remain working in your system longer than whey does.

Finally, protein will only be converted to fat if your intake of it exceeds the number of calories you burn each day. The same goes for any food type. Protein is in fact your best option as it uses more energy to digest and only has 4 cals per gram (same as carbs), whereas fat has 9.

Hope this helps!  (+ info)

What type of protein powder is best for gaining muscle?

I've heard that 100 percent whey protein is the best for gaining muscle. I was going to buy EAS Myoplex protein but it is not all whey protein, it contains casein protein and other vitamins and minerals. Bottom line: It is not 100 percent whey protein. Should I still buy it, or just go for protein that is 100 percent whey?
