1/3. J'ai vu une femme publique'. sexuality, venereal disease and homoeopathy in nineteenth-century Ghent: the tale of the patient.

Using the casebooks of the Ghent homoeopathic physician Gustave van den Berghe (born Zwevegem, 1836; died Ghent, 1902), this essay reconstructs patients' experience with sexuality and venereal disease during the late 19th century. Van den Berghe's records are uncharacteristic in that they do not translate the patient's descriptions into medical terms. The casebooks therefore represent an opportunity to hear about the disease and its social context in the patient's own words. reading these case reports carefully, we can begin to understand not only what it meant to suffer from venereal disease, but also what motivated people to seek homoeopathy in general and this healer in particular.

2/3. morbidity at an Amsterdam inner city clinic in relation to drug use.

In a small clinic in a deprived area of Amsterdam, a city with a high incidence of recreational drug use, sexually transmitted diseases and social problems, the association between drug use and disease was notable. Frequent presentation with sexually transmitted diseases, repeated trauma, unexplained recurrence of infections of the skin and respiratory tract, or severe dental caries may alert the physician to the possibility of recreational drug use and with it an increased possibility of hiv related illness. The group of drug users staying permanently in the city appeared to be ageing, without being replenished by youngsters. Very young drug users were mainly 'drug tourists' from neighbouring countries who were without medical insurance or money.

3/3. Pediculosis ciliaris.

Pediculosis ciliaris, though not as common as in the past, is still not a rare disorder. Infestation has become more prevalent among adolescents within the past few years. Severe itching, irritation, secondary conjunctivitis, and preauricular adenopathy may accompany the louse infestation. A brief review of the etiology and treatment of pediculosis ciliaris has been presented. Every physician should be aware of this disorder and be adequately prepared to treat it.
