1/20. Acute periorbital mucinosis in discoid lupus erythematosus.

Periorbital edema associated with lupus erythematosus is not frequently reported. To our knowledge, periorbital edema from increased dermal mucin has not been reported with any form of lupus. We present a patient with discoid lupus exhibiting periorbital edema from massive mucinosis.

2/20. Macroscopic and microscopic mucinosis in chronic sclerodermoid graft-versus-host disease.

Secondary cutaneous mucinosis is a well-recognized feature of connective tissue diseases such as lupus erythematosus and dermatomyositis. We report the first three cases of dermal mucinosis in association with severe chronic cutaneous graft-versus-host disease of the sclerodermoid variety. One patient had clinical changes due to abundant mucin accumulation within the papillary dermis (mucinoma). In the other two patients histological examination revealed extensive deposits of mucin predominantly within the reticular dermis. The microscopic appearances were striking, with numerous vacuolated spaces interspersed between collagen bundles. We speculate that this appearance is the result of ground substance becoming trapped within grossly sclerodermoid connective tissue.

3/20. Systemic lupus erythematosus presenting with a reticular erythematous mucinosis-like condition.

We report the case of a woman with clinical and histopathological features of reticular erythematous mucinosis syndrome (REM) who six years later developed diagnostic criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Two biopsies performed at the same area initially showed mucin dermal deposits and further development of characteristic dermo-epidermal changes of lupus erythematosus. Our findings suggest that SLE may present with an REM-like condition.

4/20. Papular and nodular mucinosis as a presenting sign of progressive systemic sclerosis.

Papular and nodular mucinosis is a distinct form of cutaneous mucinosis associated with systemic lupus erythematosis. We report a case in which papular and nodular mucinosis predated early findings of progressive systemic sclerosis.

5/20. A case of nodular cutaneous lupus mucinosis.

The patient was a 44-year-old female. She was diagnosed as having systemic lupus erythematosus at the age of 21 years and had been receiving systemic steroid treatment (5 mg prednisolone/day). Nodules began to appear on her neck, chest and back from June in 2000, and she was referred to our clinic for examination and treatment. Examination of a biopsy sample of an eruption on the neck revealed mucin deposition in the dermis. Based on the clinical and histopathological findings, she was diagnosed as having typical nodular cutaneous lupus mucinosis. The dose of steroid was increased, and the eruptions gradually disappeared.

6/20. Papulonodular mucinosis associated with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus.

Mucin deposition is a common histopathologic finding in lupus erythematosus (LE) but is rarely present in sufficient quantity to produce clinically apparent skin lesions. Until now, fewer than 40 cases of papulonodular mucinosis associated with LE have been reported in the literature, and it was associated with either systemic LE or discoid LE. For the first time, to our knowledge, we describe 2 patients with subacute cutaneous LE who presented with papulonodular mucinosis as a major clinical manifestation of their disease.

7/20. Lupus mucinosis: a case report and review of cutaneous lupus.

Lupus mucinosis (LM) is a rare disorder found only in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). We describe a patient with lupus mucinotic nodules as the initial presenting sign of SLE. We further discuss other forms of cutaneous lupus and contrast them with our findings.

8/20. Linear morphea with secondary cutaneous mucinosis.

Secondary mucinosis is a common finding in connective tissue diseases, especially in lupus erythematosus and dermatomyositis, but is seen only rarely in morphea. We report the case of a 9-year-old boy who presented with linearly arranged, flesh-colored to erythematous, indurated, very tender plaques on his right arm. He had similar lesions on his midchest and upper back. Histopathology revealed the characteristic findings of morphea and mucin deposition between thickened collagen bundles. This is an unusual case of linear morphea with hyaluronic acid deposition.

9/20. Cutaneous mucinosis in a child with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Cutaneous mucinosis is rarely associated with systemic lupus erythematosus. A 13-year-old girl had a two-month history of numerous cutaneous mucinous papules and the new onset of systemic lupus erythematosus. The differential diagnosis and pathogenesis of this variant of cutaneous mucinosis are discussed. This is the first report of a child with this unusual entity.

10/20. A solitary soft fibroma-like polypoid mucinosis: report of an unusual case.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous mucinosis can be a primary or secondary reaction, as seen in connective tissue diseases, lupus erythematosus, metabolic diseases, paraproteinemias, and even malignant lymphomas. OBJECTIVE: Focal cutaneous mucinosis usually arises as a result of the dysfunction of fibroblasts in a local area. It may arrive from various mechanical stimulations. methods: We presented an unusual heretofore unreported case of a polypoid mucinosis. CONCLUSION: The local mucin deposition in this patient was considered as a secondary change from frequent friction by clothes.
