A syndrome that results from abnormally low secretion of thyroid hormones from the thyroid gland, leading to a decrease in BASAL METABOLIC RATE. In its most severe form, there is accumulation of MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDES in the skin and EDEMA, known as myxedema.
