continue discharge of pus 4 months after a ruptured appendix/peritonitis operation. carrying a drainage tube. bacteria tested to be e. coli and pseudomas. The source of infection is unknown. Should i continue with iv injection, or should the source of infection be identified and removed first? could sources of infection be either the presence of fecal stone, suture infection, fragments of ruptured appendix or fistula? a second operation?

Is it possible to have peritonitis with out an infection present?

Years ago I had a sharp pain behind my belly button. Apparently this is one of the symptoms of peritonitis. I also had lots of other systemic symptoms. But, years later I found out I had a large cyst (adrenal tumour). It was half the size of my abdomen when discovered. Could this have caused a form of peritonitis?
----------

Yes might have, Peritonitis simply means inflammation of the peritoneum. Whilst an infection can cause this, other issues such as an perforated appendix, perforated bowel, gall bladder issues or other substances from other organs can leak into the abdominal cavity causing this inflammation too. Your cyst might have pushed on other organs causing a spillage into the abdominal cavity for example.  (+ info)

Have you ever heard of viral peritonitis?

The doctor told one of my friends that she has viral peritonitis, but she doesn't know anything else about it. If you have any information on it, or know where I can find information about it, that would be super.
Just as a heads up, she already looked on Wikipedia and couldn't find it.
Like I said, any information you have would be greatly appreciated at this point! Thanks so much!

This is basically when you have virusus in your peritoneal cavity. This is the part of your tummy surrounding the stomach, intestines etc. It is outside them but inside your tummy. Usually peritonitis is bacterial. But perhaps this happened to your friend because of a genitourinary infection. I am not sure.  (+ info)

Can you get appendix (peritonitis) problems by eating pumpkin seeds complete with their shell?

There was already a question about how you eat it. Some eat only the inside of the seed, others eat it with (salty, roasted) shell and all (extra fiber).

My question is whether you could get appendix problems by eating it with the shell. The appendix is that little tail of the at the beginning of the large intestine, if it burst out due to accumulated particles then you are in BIG trouble and can die if not treated immediately. That's why I am asking :)
----------

I have read the NHS Direct articles on Appendicitis & Peritonitis, it looks like there is a tiny tiny tiny chance that this could happen because sometimes there are unknown causes of appendicitis, however eating a high fibre diet reduces your chances of getting it, so i think its not something you should worry about at all. But read the articles below as they are quite interesting and will give you lots of background  (+ info)

How do I get information about Peritonitis?

Who has had Perritonitis, and what kind of help did you get, did you ever get it again???
----------

Never had it but ....here is what I found on it..

Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin membrane that lines the abdominal wall and covers most of the organs of the body. There are two major types of peritonitis. Primary peritonitis is caused by the spread of an infection from the blood and lymph nodes to the peritoneum  (+ info)

How long does it take for a person to develop peritonitis?

After removal of PEG feeding tube after being in place for 26 days. I'm concerned about whether my stomach had adhered to the abdominal wall to prevent spillage of contents into my abdomin.
----------

when peg tube is removed, the elastic gastric tissues will close automatically..and the leak in the abdomen is not likely to happen. but after removal of the PEG and u feel that u have discomfort in ur abdominal area...board like rigidity, when u dont have a washboard abs....fever...and increased abd cramping...and excruciating pain..suspect the onset of peritonitis and hav urself checked immediately  (+ info)

How was peritonitis (infection in abdominal cavity) treated in the late 1800's?

Back then, the most common cause of peritonitis was ruptured appendicitis. People would die from stuff like that. Many causes of peritonitis nowadays include perforated bowel from diverticular disease, cancers, bowel strangulation, etc. These conditions generally occur in older people, which wasn't as big an issue back then cause not many people lived to that age.  (+ info)
