How did doctors learn how to cure the bubonic and pneumonic plague?

HELP PLEASE!
----------

The bubonic and peumonic plague are caused by Yersinia pestis. It is a BACTERIA, which is nothing like a virus. Bacteria is usually completely treatable by antibiotics. It's not really a big problem here in the U.S. but it can be found in other parts of the world.

Bubonic is the first stage of the infection, if you get to the hopsital ASAP you can be treated and do just fine. If you dont go to the hospital you run the risk of it becoming pneumonic.

In a nut shell what happens is, a flea bites you and throws up this bacteria into it's bite. You get an infection on your leg. The infection spreads to your blood stream, you're really sick, and then it can potentially spread into your lungs. You then start to cough out/breath out the actual bacteria and can possible spread it to other peaople via air droplets.

Anyways, with all that said, generally it doesnt happen anymore because you can get treated with antibiotics. Way back in the day, when the plague was a problem there was a lot of problems with over crowding and sewage problems. With that came lots of rats that were covered in fleas that were infected with the bacteria.

Hope that helps! The CDC has a great page on the plague, with a map and everything of where they still see it.  (+ info)

Do you think that there will be another epidemic of the Bubonic or Pneumonic Plague?

Yes, we would probably be able to treat it with modern day medical practices, but do you think that the black death will ever resurface?
thank you, good answer too.
I heard on Yahoo! news like a month ago, some lady got diagnosed with bubonic plague.
----------

Many people are shocked to hear that the plague is still around.

"Human plague in the United States has occurred as mostly scattered cases in rural areas (an average of 10 to 20 persons each year). Globally, the World Health Organization reports 1,000 to 3,000 cases of plague every year."

In fact, there have been numerous plague confirmations in animals in Colorado this year.

However, with that said, I doubt that there will ever be an epidemic of plague due to advances in medicine, but nature seems to always come up with a new way to thin the population!

Please look at the following links for more information.

P.S. - Clyde, plague is caused by bacteria, not a virus. (Yersinia pestis)  (+ info)

pneumonic plague? What will happen?

I have read today that there is a outbreak of pneumonic plague in a chinese town. What could be the implications of this if it spreads further? Also could this plague mix with swine flu? what would happen?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/aug/03/china-pneumonic-plague-ziketan
----------

3 people have now died. they confirmed another death. if it spreads further, swine flu will be nothing compared to it. pnuemonic plague can kill whoever has it. it's even deadlier than the black death that killed millions in Europe. but it's most likely not going to leave the city. the disease has been increasing in the past few years. we don't know what to expect. but WHO thinks it'll be nothing. it's not causing panic like swine flu did. and no, it can no combine with swine flu. swine flu is a virus. plague is a bacteria.  (+ info)
