why do people think nail patella syndrome is somehow connected to colon cancer?

i have nail pattella and i read about it on a non profit web site. the site says that nps is connected to abnormalities of the arms and legs as well as kidney disease and glaucoma. my knees arn't the strongest but other than that i've been as healthy as a dog. is there something i shoud look foward to in the futureb
At present, the relationship is statistical. I am not sure there is a scientific explanation as to why some people with nail-patella syndrome are prone to colon cancer. Fong's disease in not very common. I saw only two cases in over three decades. With such rarity, there are few experts.

Fingernail abnormalities are found in over 80% of patients with this disorder. Abnormalities may be found in one or more fingernails. Only rarely are all fingernails affected. This disease most commonly affects the fingernails of the thumbs and index fingers. The pinky fingernail is least likely to be affected. Fingernails may be small and concave with pitting, ridges, splits, and/or discoloration. Toenails are less often affected. The lunulae, or light-colored crescent moons, at the base of the fingernail bed next to the cuticle are sometimes triangularly-shaped in people with nail-patella syndrome.

Kneecap abnormalities are the second most common sign associated with this disorder. Either or both kneecaps may be missing or poorly formed. If present, kneecaps are likely to be dislocated. The knees of people with nail-patella syndrome may have a square appearance. Besides the kneecap, other support structures including bones, ligaments, and tendons may also be malformed. These support structures stabilize the knee, therefore patients with some leg malformations may have difficulty in walking.

The hip bones of approximately 80% of patients with nail-patella syndrome have unusual bony projections called posterior iliac horns. These bony projections, or spurs, are internal and not obvious unless they are detected on x ray. This unusual pelvic anatomy is not associated with any other disease.

Kidney disease is present in at least 30% of people with nail-patella syndrome.  (+ info)

I have it and am expecting a child the chances of it happening are 50-50 but id like to research it more and learn more about others affected by it also to help myself and my mother who is suffering a lot from other aliments possibly attributed to the Disorder
My family and I also have Nail Patella Syndrome and can trace it back as far as the 1600s! I have been researching it for about 15 years now and have created a discussion/support group on YahooGroups for people with NPS. We have over 750 members from all over the world and everyone either has NPS or has a family member with it. I have a syndrome, called Nail-Patella Syndrome. It affects the joints and bone structure in the human body. It also makes people more prone to kidney infections/glaucoma/nail deformities. I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there that has this too.

i have nail patella syndrom from my father, i gave it to all ,y 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl. my daughter gave it to her 2 children male and female. i live with pain daily in my joints especially my knees/does anyone out there with this condition take pain medicine and does it help. i also suffer from depression.
My family and I also have Nail Patella Syndrome. My grandfather and several of his siblings had it, passing on to my mother and her brother. My mother passed it on to 3 of her 5 children, including myself. I passed it on to 1 of my 3 children. I have a lot of lower back pain and some knee pain. I used to have severe hip pain, but had surgery to replace them a few years ago and it is better now.

like for the loss of being able to straighten your arm, is there treatment for that i saw a doctor, but not really sure, i think i can go to him, but is there anything else?
The one thing I've found with NPS is that you have to be careful. Because we're such anomalies, we are at risk to being treated like guinea pigs. My deformities aren't that bad. I have half-developed thumb nails, bad knees (very weak), I was born with a club foot and ended up having to get an amputation later in life. My other foot is a little mis-formed but I make due. I cannot extend either of my arms fully. These things haven't effected me too horribly yet, but I assume they might later in life.

Just be careful who you go to - and don't do anything you think is not necessary.  (+ info)
