How do they go about fixing a slipped disc?

I have a slipped disc and what I do for a living is lift I do in home health care and I'm a member of a search and rescue squad. So how will they fix it?When I lay flat that is the only way it seems to go away.
----------

Hello,
The only way to confirm that you have disc protrusion is to get MRI of your lumbar spine. Usually with disc protrusin patients experiencing shooting pain down either one of the lower extremity.
1. You need to find the cause. It appears that lifting at work and being a member of life squad could one cause
2. By performing repetitive lifting your SI joint or Lambosacral joint have been out of alignment for a long time.
3. You must fix it ASAP before your symptoms and problem with your lower back gets worth.
Please make an appointment with your local chiropractor andhave him/her get multiple views of your lumbar spine and get treatment. If symptmps persist get MRI.  (+ info)

What natural remedies would you recommend for slipped disc- and hip joint pain?

Have had a slipped disc and as I get oder the pain never really goes away. I don't want to use conventional NSAIDs as I had nephritis twice as a child. Now I notice I'm also getting a pain in my hip joint when I lie on it. I'd like to know if there are natural remedies that work for relief of chronic pain.
----------

* Lie on your back with your knees bent. Keep your back in a neutral position — not overly arched and not pressed into the floor. Avoid tilting your hips up.
* Cough to activate your core muscles. Holding the contraction in your abdominal muscles, raise your hips off the floor.
* Align your hips with your knees and shoulders. Hold this position and take three deep breaths — or for about five to eight seconds.
* Return to the start position and repeat. For a challenge, try alternately extending one knee while maintaining the bridge position.

This actually works. Breathing and alignment plus the movement is an excellent home remedy. Hope this helps. Good luck.  (+ info)

I had lower back surgery for a slipped disc almost a year ago, is it bad to start running on a regular basis?

i had lower back surgery almost a year ago for a slipped disc, i started running again and i feel ok besides some minor pains. My doctor says never to run again, but then he said not to try to run until a year from the surgery. He also said there is people that go play in the NFL after the surgery.
----------

go with the doctor's advice. however, you could maybe ask if you could do light running or brisk walking to exercise your body as exercise is a therapy done after surgery to get your body used to moving again.  (+ info)

How can you tell if your gastric band has slipped out of place?

Help! This is a new band (less than 3 weeks old) and I am not sure as of yet what to expect so please bear with me. Weight loss has been SLOWWWW. As a matter of fact I gained back 1 1/2 pounds But more importantly since yesterday morning I have noticed I can eat and drink without any problem. No sense of fullness & no choking. I can swollow all of my meds without problem. Am not sure if my band has slipped or if I just need a fill. How can you tell the difference? I don't know if this is something I need to call the doctor about. I have an appointment with him on Jan 3.
I am past the pureed food and am now to the ground moist protiens. I felt fuller with the cottage cheese, pureed turkey & such. I guess that is what has me so confused. I felt fuller when I ate less (am now up to 1 1/2 - 2 ounces instead of three TBLS). I did cough a lot last week and threw up 3 times which I had not done before or since.
----------

Well my aunt had the band put in actually she was really heavy.....and now she has lost over 100 lbs. if your band has broken you would get really sick...just hang in there and dont eat too much u will get sick and repeatedly throw up.....just hang in there and dont get discouraged....you will be surprised how much weight you will actually loose...i hope your appt. goes well good luck with your experience....  (+ info)

What are the chances of being pregnant if the condom slipped?

First some background info, I have Polycystic ovarion syndrome. From the time I was 15 until about a year ago (I'm 26 now), I did not get a period if I was not on birth control. My doctor had put me on birth control pills, and had told me that if I lost wieght, it could reverse. I have lost over 100 pounds, and I haven't been on the birth control for about 5 months. Since stopping the pill, I have had a period every month right on time. My boyfriend and I always use a condom, but tonight it slipped off, and niether of us realized it until after when he went to remove it and it wasn't on. We did find it, and it looked to be empty, and we are not sure when it came off. I'm about 13 days into my cycle. I know it's way to early to know for sure, and he said not to worry yet, but I'm worried. So now I just wondered what the chances could be that I become pregnant from this. Because of my PCOS, are the chances slim? Or are they greater since I have been getting a period regularly?
----------

I am not familiar with PCOS, but about the condom slipping, it's better to be safe than sorry. Fred Meyer pharmacy and some Rite Aid pharmacies have the 72 hour pill. Take it while you can, the sooner the more effecitve. It is not an abortion pill, it just prevents the pregnancy from occuring at all. It's like birth control on steriods. It doesn't mess up your cycle either, you just might start 3 or 4 days earlier than normal.
When I became pregnant with my son, I remember my doctor telling me that women hit thier peak day of pregnancy on the 15th day of thier cycle. Good Luck, and congrads on using a condom. You have no idea how many people out there get careless on that one.  (+ info)

How can I treat a slipped disc at home?

B/c of symptoms I am and relatives are sure I've slipped a disc in my neck. I don't have insurance, what can I do at home as far as treatment. It causes pain in one side of neck, one side of back, down one leg, & coldness with some numbness on top of foot. All symptoms are on left side. Any heelp will be greatly appriciated.
----------

Here is some natural things you could try:
Potassium is important for muscle contraction and relaxation, and nerve conduction which is key in the treatment of Backache. Feverfew Extract is traditionally used to control the inflammation that constricts blood vessels, which may contribute to backache. White Willow Extract is included in the treatment of Backache as it contains a chemical similar to aspirin. Preliminary research indicates that White Willow bark has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. An animal study has suggested that L-Phenylalanine may reduce pain by decreasing the amounts of the enzyme that breaks down endorphins. DL-Phenylalanine is also involved in the biosynthesis of tyrosine that can help to elevate mood which may be implicated in the treatment of Backache. Calcium plays a key role in proper muscle contraction and nerve function. Lack of Magnesium may lead to muscle weakness.

However, you probably should go to the doctor and get it looked at. It is generally agreed that a slipped disc should be treated conservatively, with surgery being considered only when other approaches to treatment have failed. The treatment will typically mean a brief period of bed-rest with appropriate painkillers. Physiotherapy or chiropractic teatment should also be explored. You could always talk to the doctors,PT, or chiropractor about your financial situation, most are willing to help find less expensive treatment methods.

Whether to have an operation or not, is a decision for a specialist.

When there are symptoms of pressure on the spinal cord or on the cauda equina, an operation should be performed as soon as possible.

Cases involving serious or increasing paralysis should be treated as an emergency and admitted to hospital for assessment immediately.

explain your situation and most PT places are willing to work with you and financial status. You may have  (+ info)

What exercises can I do with a slipped disc?

I have a slipped disc and I wanted to know what exercises can I do that won't put pressure on my back and it will help me stay in shape? My doctor told me to do some biking, lite swimming and lite walking, but I was wondering if anybody knows what else I can do?
----------

you can try bridging exercises for your lower back and abs. Lay on your back, bend your knees to approx 90 degrees. Tighten your abdominal muscles and slowly lift up and lower your pelvis. a few sets of 10 a day should help strengthen your core and prevent future slipped discs.  (+ info)
