FAQ - embryo loss

if you urinate after invetrofertilization do you stand a chance of losing the embryo?

We are concerned that urinating will cause the loss of the embryos if it happens soon after or in the next few days.
Anxious for an answer. Please do not be silly this is a serious question.
----------

No,your urinary tract is completely separate from your uterus. Everybody has to pee! If doing so resulted in the loss of the embryo then ivf wouldn't work for anyone!  (+ info)

How soon after an embryo implants would implantation bleeding occur? Is it immediate?

I know that not everyone has implantation bleeding but if it did, how long after the embryo implanted would the blood be visible?
----------

2-3 days after implantation. By then you would have a positive pregnancy test as well.  (+ info)

What does an embryo do after ivf transfer before it implants?

I had an embryo transfer 2 days after fertilisation (ivf) but apparently embryos don't implant until day 5-10. I'm wondering where it goes and what it does before it implants. I'm sure it's not just wandering around in there. Maybe it just sits on the wall until it's ready to start burrowing. Does anyone know?
----------

After your embryo transfer, your embryo does wander around your uterus, developing further by splitting cells and eventually hatching from the egg shell (zona). Then it finds a good spot to implant and begins irritating the endometrium to bring up blood vessels that it can attach to. This can take 5-10 days. It doesn't just sit on the endometrium and wait to attach, it actually starts growing the yolk sac and fetal pole and it moves the whole time, until it finds the right spot.  (+ info)

What week of development for embryo/fetus does the neocortex start to develop?

And when does the embryo/fetus start to respond to stimuli, regardless of whether it has started developing a neocortex or not?
And yes, I understand that even a newborn infant's neocortex is not as developed as an adult human's. So a better question may be: When do the cells for the neocortex start to differentiate between the rest of the cells for the embryo/fetal brain?

What is the average cost of an embryo transfer?

The whole process of taking the egg from the woman, the sperm from the man and then inserting the embryo in a surrogate. I've been going crazy trying to find an estimate on this so any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
Oh, and not including surrogate fees because the surrogate would be a friend.
----------

I believe when doing IVF and using a surrogate in the United States, you are looking at $60,000 +++

There is the cost of the IVF cycle which averages $10,000 - $16,000, fee for the surrogate (unless you have a family member of friend), agency fees (if you go through one), legal fees having to do with custody, etc . . . medical fees, cost for maternity clothes and necessities . . .

Here is a good link that you might want to look at:

How long does an embryo take to implant into the uterine wall after an ivf transfer?

This was a 5 day embryo transfer.
----------

It starts at 3 days past transfer (dpt) and completes at 5dpt

1dpt....Blastocyst hatches out of shell on this day
2dpt.. Blastocyst attaches to a site on the uterine lining
3dpt.. Implantation begins,as the blastocyst begins to bury in the lining
4dpt.. Implantation process continues and morula buries deeper in the lining
5dpt.. Morula is completely inmplanted in the lining and has placenta cells &
fetal cells
6dpt...Placenta cells begin to secret HCG in the blood
7dpt...More HCG is produced as fetus develops
8dpt...More HCG is produced as fetus develops
9dpt...HCG levels are now high enough to be immediately detected on

How long in an embryo protected from the internal environment?

I'm quite worried that I might be pregnant. It would be wonderful but I drank quite a bit of alcohol while celebrating a multitude of special events during the time I may have concieved. How long is the embryo protected from the alcohol? I know it takes a while to reach the uterus but I'm not sure how long it is in its own protective barrier.
OMG thank you baggyk! You have no idea how happy your answer makes me :-) Pregnant or not at least I can relax a bit now. You are the best!
----------

The first two weeks after conception, before most women even know they are pregnant, are guilt-free. After implantation (two weeks after fertilisation) the placenta starts to form and that is when you have to be careful. That said, only North Americans are advised not to have any alcohol during pregnancy. In Europe most women continue to have one small glass of wine or beer per day with the evening meal.

That said, anyone who is actively ttc should be taking prenatal vitamins to prevent birth defects. No wine or beer is going to cause them, but a shortage of folic acid might.  (+ info)

Is embryo selection good or bad for the future coming?

Embryo selection is when scientists take eggs out of the mother and fertilize them in a testing dish, then after they grow a little, the scientist test the embryo for the desired or undesired characteristics. They throw the embryos with the things not wanted away, then put the ones with what is wanted back in to the mother, and i want to know if this is going in a positive direction, or if it is a bad thing.
----------

I'm sure there would be some negative aspects in the far future but also some positive aspects. Eradication of genetic diseases/disorders would be a great benefit. Where as trending of "favorite" characteristics could diminish genetic diversity and that would be bad.

Personally, as a TTC-er who will be doing IVF in the near future due to infertility, DH and I have greatly considered gender selection. The way I see it is > If I am going to spend tens of thousands of dollars to HOPEFULLY get preggers I am going to go all out and at least try for the gender I want. Please believe, tho, that if I could go all-naturale I would ... but that's life.

All in all ... I think it has pros and cons, if not abused it could have many great possibilities.  (+ info)

What exactly is an embryo placement program?

I saw a flier for an adoption company ( in the US) and it said they handle domestic infant adoptions and they have an embryo placement program... I 've never heard of one so I was just wondering... Is it the unused embryos bein given to other couples who can concieve?? or what?
----------

This is when a couple has used IVF, and have developed embryos that are frozen. The couple has developed as big of a family as they had desired, and have chosen to donate any leftover frozen embryos to other hopeful infertile couples. My husband and I choose this very option when we attempt an IVF cycle, rather than having the embryos disposed of, or donated to science. We hope that by donating our embryos, another couple may find some joy too.  (+ info)
