What are the signs/symptoms of Chorioamnionitis?

Chorioamnionitis, which is an infection of hte amniotic fluid and fetal membranes, is diagnosed in 1 in 100 pregnancies, though it is suspected that the true incidence may be higher. The infection in believed to be a major cause of preterm premature rupture of the membranes as well as premature labor.

Signs and Symptoms: In some cases, chorioamnionitis has no symptoms, particularly at first. Diagnosis is complicated by the fact that there is no somple test that can confirm the presence on infection. Often, the first sign of Chorioamnionitis is rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) in the mother. (Tachycardia may also be caused by dehyradtion, medication, low blood pressure, or anxiety, but should in any case be reported to the practitioner.)

Then a fever over 100.4'F developes, and in many cases there is uterine tenderness. If the membranes have ruptured, there may also be a foul odor from the amniotic fluid; if they are intact, there may be an unpleasant-smelling vaginal discharge, originating in the cervix. Lab tests will reveal an increased white blood count ( a sign that the body is fighting and infection.) The fetus may score low on a biophysical profile, indicating some distress.

The newborn is at risk for infection and possibly for low APGAR scores, but usually not for any long-term problems.  (+ info)

Clots! How big is too big, and when do I worry?

I just gave birth four days ago. My OB's are horrible and I never want to see them again. But I am passing large clots. I presented with chorioamnionitis and was in the hospital for additional time. The clots are roughly the size of lemons. I don't have anyone I can leave my newborn with, and I don't think it's a good idea to expose her to a germ-filled emergency waiting room, or even a doctor's waiting room. The bleeding is heavy, but I am not passing out or anything.

Anyone have any ideas on what I should do? Am I worrying over nothing?

It doesn't sound normal, I would go to the doctor (even if you need to take the baby with you). Can you have someone watch the baby while you go? If the answer is no, I would just take her with you. You need to make sure you are healthy so you can take care of her. : )  (+ info)

Group B Strep infection during pregnancy? Did anyone have this?

I know that they connect you to IV antibiotics during labor..

But what i'm more worried about is that it can cause infection in the amniotic fluid During pregnancy. I'm only 33 weeks and wouldn't want my waters to be infected.. It's called chorioamnionitis..

Did anyone have this and what is the chance that the membranes get infected by these horrific bacteria???
I'm wondering whether it can cause amniotic fluid infection that's what Im worried about?
That is not how it usually causes problems. It usually infects baby's lungs as baby is delivered vaginally if you have not been treated. This bacteria can be present at any time down there & hardly ever causes maternal problems. The bigger worry is with baby

i also have been having an uncomfortable feeling around my old c-section scar my temp was 99.1...we lost a little girl in 2006 at 21 weeks due to early bleeding then found the amniotic sac was tearing leading to placental abruption and chorioamnionitis. i could be over-reacting but any advice pref from an obs/gynae nurse or doctor would be great before i go rushing to A&E

I just received my records from a recent stillbirth. My son was born at 20 weeks after my water broke. The final diagnosis of the pathology of the placenta reads: Immature placenta(109 grams) with Acute subchorionitis and acute necrotizing chorioamnionitis with numerous bacteria identified.
What does this mean?
Please only answer if you have a medical background and are certain of your answer.

Immature placenta : not fully developed
acute : sharp, having severe symptoms with a short course

sub - below
chorion - the outmost of the fetal membranes composed of trophoblasts lined with mesoderm, it develops villi becomes vascularized by allantoic vessels, informs the fetal part of the placenta.

necrotizing - means death
chorioamnionitis - inflammation of the chorion due to bacteria.

So sorry for your loss. This means the fetus was not developing normally or healthy and nature's way of eliminating it was through your experience of stillbirth. Nothing you could have done. Not your fault.  (+ info)

Delivered premature baby at 23 weeks?

I was 23 weeks pregnant and I went into pre-mature labor. I started having contractions at 11 pm. Nurse checked my cervix at 1 am and it was close. But contractions didn't stop, at 7 am in morning doctor mentioned that my cervix is open and bag is coming out. I ended up delivering the baby at 6 pm on the same day. I was kept on tocolytic from 2 - 4 pm. We didn't go for autopsy since we had gone through all recommended tests before to check chromosomal abnormalities etc (nuchal translucency, afp) and the results were nornal. My plancenta report showed "acute chorioamnionitis" and all my blood test for infection during and after the delivery are normal. I had no s/s of infection and baby's heart-beat was normal and he lived for 2 hours.

Can this "acute chorioamnionitis" occur when I was in labor since morning?
Can cervical incompetance be the cause of pre-mature labor since my cervix was closed at 2 am when I was contracting?
Could baby autopsy would have helped in knowing more?
acute chorioaminonitis occurs as an infection affects the chorionic and aminotic membranes; this probably occurred from an infection from the blood stream or from an ascending infection from the vagina; it triggered the labour, and as a result of the prolonged labour

cervical incompetence is not the cause of the labour

and yes, an autopsy would be helpful in determining the cause of the premature labour, if only to rule out gross abnormalities  (+ info)

I read alot of articles on the website about Group B Streptococcus and chorioamnionitis and was wondering if they are the same thing or if they are different and what causes these infections. My first baby was born premature and they said it was because I had chorioamnionitis. And I was just curios is that was the same as Group B Strep.

How long will I bleed after induced labor at 16 weeks gestation + D&C?

My water broke at 16 weeks due to a Chorioamnionitis and I was induced labor. My baby was born intact; however, he was dead...After I delivered my son, I had a D&C. All this occurred on 03/30. It's 04/10 & I am still bleeding about a pad a day. It's not heavy, but it's sticky, and I am getting intermittent cramps on both sides of my abdomen, especially on my right side. I am wondering if this is normal and how long it will last? I keep reading about 1 to 2 weeks after a D&C, but since I delivered vaginally, this doesn't seem to apply. However, because the baby was only 12 inches and I was only dialated 5 cm, 4 to 6 weeks doesn't seem right either. Also, could I have an appendicitis since the pain is stronger on the right side? I have never gone through this before and I have no clue what is going on with my body...I cannot get answers from anyone I know either because none of them have ever gone through something like this...

I am so sorry; I lost my son after an induced labor and I still feel that loss. There are lots of great support groups out there if you want. Your bleeding: not sure what the D&C difference is, but I suspect it's the same as with a normal delivery: I bled very heavily for 10 days, then a little for another two-three weeks (WAY more than a pad a day, but D&C probably cleans you up a lot more) and had to take serious ibuprofen for several days; couldn't move around much, either. Be sure to take stool softener too! That was a life saver because I had stitches. In short -- call your doctor's office and ask them because a D&C is so much different, but I suspect it's a normal reaction of your body readjusting.  (+ info)
