What is the connection between malignant neoplasms and crabs?

The more common term for malignant neoplasms, cancer, is Latin for crab, and the word "carcinogen," meaning a cancer-causing agent, comes from the Greek word for crab, "karkinos." What is the connection between these two seemingly unrelated things?
----------

Cancer, both the disease and the astronomical constellation, derive from the Latin cancer or cancrum, meaning crab. The astrological sign, of course, is said to resemble a crab and the disease was so named by the ancient Greek physician Galen (129-200 A.D.) who noted the similarity between a certain type of tumor with a crab as well—the swollen veins around the tumor resembling the legs of a crab.

Old English adopted cancer directly from Latin and used it for a variety of spreading sores and ulcers. This early sense survives in the modern word canker. From c.1000 in a manuscript called Læce Boc (Leech Book), collected in Oswald Cockayne’s Leechdoms, Wortcunning, and Starcraft of Early England, Vol. II, 1865:

Gemeng wið þam dustum, clæm on ðone cancer.
(Mix with the dust, smear on the cancer.)

And from Wyclif’s 2 Timothy, 1382:

The word of hem crepith as a kankir

The word was being applied specifically to the disease we today call cancer by the beginning of the 17th century. From Philemon Holland’s translation of Pliny’s Historie of the World:

Cancer is a swelling or sore comming of melancholy bloud, about which the veins appeare of a blacke or swert colour, spread in manner of a Creifish clees.

The astronomical sense of cancer is from the Latin name for the constellation of the crab. The name was known to the Anglo-Saxons, but only as a Latin name and was not assimilated into English until the Middle English period. It appears in Ælfric’s De Temporibus Anni, written c.993, in a list of the constellations of the Zodiac:

Feorða • Cancer • þæt is Crabba
(Fourth, Cancer, that is the crab.)

The Anglicized name appears c.1391 in Chaucer’s Treatise on the Astrolabe:

In this heved of cancer is the grettist declinacioun northward of the sonne...this signe of cancre is clepid the tropik of Somer.
(At this first point (head) of cancer is the greatest declination northward of the sun…this sign of cancer is named the tropic of summer.)

What tongue splitting method produces the longest split?

I have already looked into all of the side effects and complications, so for all of you out there who just want to leave a comment like thats gross or how can you do that. i dont need to hear it.

I am wanting to get a tongue lengthening and split. No it is not for sexual reasons. All i want to know is which method has the least amount of regrowth and the prices of the method.

I have seen some splits that are just on the tip and they look odd to me. i already have a pretty long tongue but i am hoping if i get the lengthening with the split i have better chances of a longer split and less regrowth.

And just a little rant to all of the people that are freaked out by it and say that children will run screaming, that is ridiculous. Certain people freak about a tongue split but they wouldnt run screaming from someone with a disease injected in there forehead so that they can look like robocop.
----------

one way that can help limit the regrowth is anchoring it with a large-gauge piercing as an anchor for it... as far as the *best* method, since this isn't exactly a mainstream mod, there hasn't been a particular one that has been determined to be the *best*... many splits have to be re-cut after the healing period is done, due to regrowth....

talk to a reputible mod practitioner... ask to see both fresh and healed shots of the work... if they can produce that, and you are happy with it, after considering the risks, go for it...

Good luck, and I hope you're happy with whatever method you choose!  (+ info)

How do you keep your tongue on the roof of your mouth when you have a bad habit of tongue thrusting?

Even though I have braces and retainers for my tongue thrusting, I still find myself placing my tongue on the front of the retainers when I swallow. It's extremely hard trying to swallow with my tongue on the roof of my mouth behind the retainers.

Do any of you have any suggestions that you can offer?
----------

There are some exercises that you can perform that will teach you how to reform your swallowing patterns. Ask the orthodontist to explain them to you. Good luck  (+ info)

Can a tongue ring cause your lower front teeth to shift forward by the pressure from the barbell?

I've had my tongue pierced for four years. In the last 6 months I've noticed that my front bottom row of teeth has shifted forward and now have a couple gaps behind them. You can't see it when I smile or talk, but it still worries me that it's going to get worse.

Do you think this is happening because of the tongue ring or something else? (I do not have wisdom teeth on the bottom so it's not that.)

Anyone else had this happen to them?
----------

I can guarantee it isn't from the tongue ring. The only thing a tongue ring will do to your teeth is chip them up. Teeth are always shifting, until they find an equilibrium from the force of your tongue, your lips on the other side, and your opposing teeth which can push them either way depending on what type of bite you have. How old are you? you could still be growing. I really don't know what you mean by gaps behind them. either way, if it really concerns you, you can see an orthodontiist for a free consultation.  (+ info)

How much swelling from a tongue piercing is normal?

This is the beginning of the third day that I've had my tongue pierced. They did it at an angle and left less room for swelling than normal. I've noticed past couple of days that the top ball is digging into my tongue and making quite an indent. Does it sound like it still has potential to be a healthy piercing a week from now as long as I keep it clean? From what I understand, the 2-3rd day is the peak of a tongue piercing's swelling.
----------

anwall10's info is not correct. Tongue piercings swell up to two weeks, it's completely normal. Rejection is VERY rare in tongue piercings. They're super easy to heal, and it takes a lot to mess them up.

They pierce at an angle to accomodate for your anatomy (not hitting your teeth, gums, or tongue web). It doesn't affect swelling, OR risk of infection. Any good piercer will do this to protect your teeth and gums.

It's normal to have your tongue swell to the point where you do not see any extra barbell- just the balls.
You will need to be changed to a longer barbell if the top ball literally begins to sink into the piercing's hole... getting embedded. If this happens, you'll just get changed to a longer barbell by your piercer, and your piercing will begin to settle down and be fine. This happened to a standard navel piercing I've previously had.

An indentation in your tongue is normal.

Take Ibuprofen every 4 hours, eat lots of ice, drink lots of cold water, and cold foods to help with swelling.
Swishing with hot water will help with pain.  (+ info)

Do you know how your tongue is white/yellow in the morning when brushing? What do I do to clean it?

I brushed my tongue but it's still white. I got a tongue cleaner from te 99c store it's kind of like a blue stick with ridges on the tip of it but that didn't work either. The back of my tongue is even whiter.
----------

brush it when you're brushing your teeth.  (+ info)

How long do tongue piercings useally take to heal?

I got my tongue web pierced last saturday. -The tongue web is under the tongue btw ^^ but it's still considered a tongue piercing.
Anyway,my piercer didn't really tell me how long it will take to fully heal. All she said was that tongue piercings are the fastest to heal. And yeah i was in to much pain to ask how long it will take.
So 10 points to whoever can answer how long it takes to heal.
Easy :)

Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken web piercings usually take 2 or 3 months. ;D  (+ info)

What type of tongue barbells should I buy?

I recently got my tongue pierced and I'm psyched to show it off with really cool barbells. I am finding tons of different types online and I don't know which are best to buy. Do the tips of the barbell unscrew easily? Every time I chew my food I'm scared I'm going to accidentally swallow the ball! Any tips from avid tongue piercing wearers?

How does a tongue piercing compare to a belly button piercing?

I've had my belly button pierced and now I want my tongue pierced. I've read all about risks and after care, but I want someone who's had bellybutton and tongue piercings to tell me their opinion about how they compare. THANKS :)
----------

I haven't had two piercings which were as different as navel and tongue lol!

- Healing times are complete opposites, my navel took a good year to settle down, where as my tongue was healed within two weeks.
- I had no swelling for my navel, but my tongue completely filled my mouth from days 2-6 after getting it pierced!
- You have to get a long bar in your tongue at first to accomodate swelling, but it gets changed to a regular length one after a few weeks.
- Even now if I change my belly bar the piercing gets angry and doesn't forgive me for days, but apart from the fact that it's really slippery, changing my tongue bar has always been really easy
- You can easily get infections on your navel, but your mouth is one of the fastest healing places on the body and only an idiot could get an infected tongue piercing.
- My navel was completely painless to get pierced, but I felt the needle go through the skin - just uncomfortable. Tongue piercings are even more uncomfortable than this, and are relatively painless apart from a stinging when the needle goes through the layer of skin on the bottom of your tongue - both piercings are totally bearable!
- And finally, I've never known a belly bar to chip teeth! My teeth are a mess from playing with my tongue bar though.

Hope this helped, you should totally go for it as it's the easiest piercing ever, can be hidden and great for... other things ;)  (+ info)
