What are the symptoms of a retained placenta? please help?

what are the symptoms of a retained placenta?
[after you have given birth and gone home, when a piece if left inside of you]
how common is it?
and do you always need a D & C?
----------

yeah..no, not everytime can the hospital catch it..Excess bleeding, like mega bleeding and cramping..They don't have to do a d&c, they can give you a drug that will really make your uterus cramp down and expell what is left. My sis had this happen, she went into the emergency room and they did an ultrasound to find out..They did see something on there, gave her the pills, and she was fine after..  (+ info)

What are the causes of retained placenta?

I want to know honest answers on how I can avoid this after having a previous history with it, please and preferably some references. Thanks
----------

There is no way to really avoid it. I had it with my first son and got really sick and bled heavily. I would suggest breastfeeding because this contracts your uterus and pushes things out. If your last pregnancy was premature than there isn't much you can do. Just hope for the best.  (+ info)

I am pregnant and had a retained placenta with previous pregnancy, what is the chance of it happening again?

After delivery placenta was in for more than 30min, specialist had to manually remove. It turns out that the placenta was caked up on my uterus.

Has anyone ever had retained placenta?

I had a wonderful labor, but a horrible after birth and I was just wondering how common retained placenta was. The hospital that I gave birth in, had told me that they had never even had to deal with a case like mine. So if you did have it, what happened to you or anyone that you know?
----------

When I delivered my 3rd, the doctors were in such a hurry to get things moving after she was born, because we were told that she wouldn't live if she made it to birth and I wanted to spend time with her just incase she didn't make it, so they yanked on the umbilical cord to speed up the delivery of the placenta and didn't bother to check to see if it all came out and a big chunk didn't. It was horrific pain and heavy bleeding and then my belly grew very tender to the point wearing even underwear hurt and I was running a high fever and they gave me antibiotics for the fever via IV in the hospital and a 2wk script for at home. When the chunk of placenta came out(2 days later,I was supposed to be released that day and ended up getting an extra 2 days because of it), it was roughly the size of a sm. cantelope or slightly bigger than a softball, it was excrutiatingly painful. Alot worse than the pain of birth or anything else. The good part was that the antibiotics kicked the infection and within a week or so after that I was feeling ok(I don't handle antibiotics well so I was ill until I finished the course) There's weren't any long lasting effects and I have gone on to have a few more since then (waiting for #5 right now).  (+ info)

Symptoms of retained placenta?

What are the symptoms of retained placenta? I know the immediate symptoms; I'm referring to a woman who is still spotting twelve weeks after birth. There was initially a rather large blood loss. Never slowed until passage of v. large clots at 4 wks. postpartum, then stopped completely for several days, only to resume as spotting for the last 7 weeks. Individual has also had difficulty with milk supply and weight loss which has not occurred in prior pregnancies; could be related?

No 'call the doctor' replies, please. It's obvious and it's been done; no ultrasound just a rather bored-sounding nurse insisting it's a period.

Check on Webmd.com, they tell you every thing you need to know, be careful and have them watch for tearing of the placenta.  (+ info)

I am sorry to say there are no doctors on-line in Yahoo and I suspect that even the qualified nurses who do answer here cannot or would not dare to give their opinion. All I did was look up your description and you can decide what does seem

retained placenta?

has anyone here had retained placenta after delivery?
----------

Yes, I had this after I had my son, straight after the birth the midwife checked me over and stitched me up, then about an hour later my husband noticed that I was bleeding alot, the blood had soaked through the mattress on the bed and had formed a pool of blood under the bed, the midwife said I'd be o.k and they cleaned me up and moved me to the ward, after another couple of hours I started to feel really ill, worse than I had been feeling, the Dr was sent for and he said I was tachycardic, after checking me over he saw I was still bleeding alot, he then felt my stomach and said I needed to go to theatre immediately for the evacuation of a retained placenta! The procedure was done under spinal block, I was then moved back to the ward a full 8 hrs after giving birth!! The following day I felt that ill I thought I was dying!, I had to have 5 units of blood transfused! Great!! All this because the placenta wasn't checked after I gave birth to my son, if it wasn't for my husband's persistence in demanding someone take a look at me, I'd be DEAD!! and that's no lie!!  (+ info)
