Atrophy??????????????

Okay you know how if your about 40 years old and if you don't use your muscle you get atrophy? Well, my question is if your a teenager around 17, 18 and up can you get atrophy too if you don't ever use your muscles? But won't you just get fat?!
Lol. This is a silly question, but I was wondering.
----------

fat and muscle atrophy are 2 differnet things. getting fat usually is not far from other aspects of lazy life, but un-related to atrophy specifically.  (+ info)

Is it normal to get multiple yeast infections while pregnant?

I'm 25 wks and have had yeast infections constantly since I've been pregnant. Tried creams perscribed by doctors nothing helps. Been tested for STD's all negative. The only thing that came back positive is group B strep( bacteria that lives in digestive system and in vagina).
----------

Yes! I am now 30 weeks pregnant and also have had multiple yeast infections where I live in Oz is currently experiencing 40 degree temperatures which has not helped. I found that putting cold yoghurt down there offers relief and yoghurt has properties in it that help the cause of the infection. The creams that I have i also put in the fridge to keep cool and I have found that this really helps. Other then that I am constantly in the shower wear cotton undies and always wash my clothing in an antifungal wash.  (+ info)

Where can you get stem cell therapy for Multiple Sclerosis?

It is not an approved therapy yet, but I hear people are doing it experimentally. I understand there are 2 types of stem cell therapies, at least....one where they regrow your immune system after killing it with chemo, and the other where they inject umbilical stem cells into your spine.

I am interested in getting info on both....who do you contact?
----------

autologous stem cell transplantation.. yeah it has shown promise.. 1) ask your neurologist if they hav any connections with studies being done (until there is a FDA approved procedure, this is the best chance).. or 2) http://wwwmsviewsandrelatednews.blogspot.com/2009/07/ms-moms-stem-cell-treatment-journey-in.html I found this.. i dunno anything about it.. but here it is, none-the-less.  (+ info)

air conditioning system at nursing home causes multiple astma cases 2 days after turned on from winter shutdow?

Convalescent home restarted thier ac system and within a week a dozen patients developed wheezing and shortness of breath. Chest xrays on all patients indicated no infection but breathing treatments and hospitalization for half are were and are being required on those patients. Md at er room suggested a chemical poisoining coming out of ac. Healthy visitiors leave with a funny feeling in thier throat and some pain in their chest. Whats UP with this one State will investigate tomorrow Looking for a heads up please
----------

When air conditioners cool air, they condense moisture on the coil which drains into a trough and supposedly into a drain from there. If there is water left standing in a trough for a lengthy period of time, bacteria can grow. It is a well documented occurrence. Years ago a bunch of American Legioners were at a hotel for a convention. When the air got turned on it circulated a bad strain of bacteria that eventually killed several people from pneumonia. The bacteria was isolated and is now called Legionella. They eventually treated the disease with erythromycin and now can successfully identify the organism. It is now a routine pathology screen for all patients admitted to the hospital with pneumonia. Most patients are started on Levaquin or a combination Azithromycin/Rocephin on admission because these antibiotics cover atypical organisms like Legionella.

Other causes could be dust, dust mite allergies and pollens that are in the ducts of the system. Also, fluctuations in temperature between warm and cold can trigger respiratory problems in patients with COPD. The Freons used are basically inert gases called fluorohydrocarbons and are very non-reactive. A major system leak can cause depletion of oxygen temporarily and the compounds only form toxic substrates when burned in a fire at high heat. So, the cause is probably not the refrigerant.

Good luck and I hope you find the root cause. David  (+ info)

Is the prospective payment system actually unhealthy for some categories of patients ?

"prospective payment is a system (Medicare uses it, and where Medicare goes, other insurance systems quickly follow) in which a hospital is paid X number of dollars to treat Y diagnosis. If they get it done quickly and cheaply, they show a profit. If there are complications, and most of the time these days people have multiple co-morbidities, then they can lose lots of money in a hurry."

Suppose I am in the profile of patient who will easily contract pneumonia and ARDS if admitted to hospital for major surgery. For one reason or another an ultrasound is run on me and I am diagnosed with a circulatory disorder.(Supposedly one of my arteries has ballooned out and the suggestion is it may easily burst).
My doctor recommends surgery saying I would normally be considered too old, but I am very strong.
My prognosis of the hospital system is that it's very unhealthy for me.
There will quite likely be complications. According to the quote above, it looks like the hospital will panic.
No-one seems to be factoring in, the risk of iatrogenic complications.
The pneumonia and ARDS are essentially iatrogenic.

Am puzzled because this unhealthy hospital system would need some way of rapidly shutting me down if I develop complications.

So I was encouraged to have the operation but I wasn't told that the hospital system has a way of rapidly shutting me down if I develop complications.

Given the decision to operate, I don't see why pneumonia and ARDS are considered as complications. Treatment for these should be part of the service.

There seems to be some Machiavellian plotting going on behind the scenes.
One group is arguing that treatment for predictable complications pneumonia and ARDS should be part of the service, and another group is arguing against this.

Worst case scenario is I'll be euthansed as some sort of test case, to set a precedent for future standards of service.

It may seem the the PPS system may motivate health care providers to "cut corners" by not performing certain tests and procedures. The less the hospital actually does to you, the more money they get to keep.

Yet, we must remember that we are still held to the same standards of care and protocols that were in place prior to the PPS system. In the case you mention above, the doctor is considering surgery because you are an otherwise healthy person and are being considered for this surgery because of the vascular anomaly that was found. The irresponsible system would say "well, he doesn't meet the criteria for age, so we are under no obligation to perform the surgery."

Rather than viewing PPS as an "unhealthy" system, I view it as a much needed reality check to prevent uneccesary procedures. Prolonged use of the fee-for-service system is what got us in the mess that we are in now (escalated cost of health care). The PPS system made health care professionals take look at what they were doing and hold them accountable for the procedures they performed. Out of it comes much research investigating the validity of the treatments and tests that were being performed. Prior to this, many things were performed haphazardly.

I view the PPS system as a way of making the provider more responsible for what they are doing. What benefits the patient is that charges above and beyond the PPS are not directed toward the patient. Again, it is the hospital's responsibility for charges above and beyond.  (+ info)

How to keep muscles from atrophy?

I have a concussion and can't lift weights for a week...the problem is that I lose muscle REALLY FAST whenever I go multiple days without working out. So what all can I do to keep from losing as much muscle as possible, especially in terms of diet? I can't run, jog, or do anything else very strenuous either.

Thanks

SHOULDER:
1) Protract the Scapula- Roll the shoulder blade forward by cupping one hand over the front of the shoulder and placing the other hand on the shoulder blade.

2) Flexion and Extension- Arm straight down to the side. Reach straight up to head and back. "Lift your arm up overhead, put it back down to your side."

3) Horizontal Adduction- Arm straight out to side, reach across and touch opposite shoulder.

4) Abduction- Arm at side, palm up, circle out and up over head to touch opposite ear.

5) Internal and External Rotation- Arm at side, elbow bent, move hand to stomach and then back to the bed. Be sure to keep the elbow bent and touching the person's side.

THE ELBOW AND FOREARM:
1) Elbow Flexion and Extension- Arm at side, palm up, touch hand to shoulder and return to starting position.

2) Forearm Pronation and Supination- Arm at side, elbow bent, turn palm toward face, then toward feet. When turning the forearm be sure to apply to the forearm and not to the wrist.

THE WRIST:
1) Wrist Radial and Ulnar Deviation- Elbow bent, at side, move wrist side to side as if shaking hands.

2) Wrist Flexion and Extension- Elbow bent, at side, move wrist as though waving goodbye. (move hand from the back of forearm to the front of forearm)

3) Wrist Circumduction- Elbow bent, at side, move wrist in a circular motion.

THE HAND AND FINGERS:
1) Hand Metacarpal Gliding- Hold each edge of the hand with the back of the hand facing you. With the your thumbs on adjacent metacarpal bones, move up and down in relation to each other.

2) Fingers Flexion and Extension- Open and close the hand in a **** motion.

3) Fingers Abduction and Adduction- Fan the fingers apart and together.

4) Fingers Opposition- Touch thumb to base of each finger.

5) Fingers Metacarpalphalangeal (had to look the selling up on this one!! Lol) Flexion- Stabilize the ends of the fingers. At the knuckles bend at 1st knuckle (closest to the hand) keeping fingers straight.

6) Fingers Proximal Interphalangeal Flexion- Stabilize the first knuckle joint, bend 2nd joint keeping the rest of the finger straight.

7) Fingers Distal Interphalangeal Flexion- Stabilize 1st and 2nd joint, bend 3rd knuckle joint.

Goodluck!(:  (+ info)

Can I do multiple cardio sessions in one day?

On my days off, I normally drink one scoop of whey/casein protein powder with water before I do one hour on the Stair Master at the gym using the regular "fat burn" program (which I burn 530 calories upon finishing) right after waking up and fasting for 8+ hours sleeping. There are only 12 calories of carbs and 25 calories of fat per scoop, so I know it's like nothing to burn that off during my cardio session while the whey/casein mix helps to preserve my muscle fibers/tissue. As one does cardio, I've read that the order of burn goes from glycogen stores...to fat stores...to protein/muscle stores. If I already have 26g of protein in my system, will the order just skip burning muscle and just use the protein I just consumed/digested prior? Also, can I do another cardio session 3 hours later if I ate no carbs but just consumed another scoop of whey/casein with water before the next cardio session? Thanks in advance.
----------

Assuming you eat something else throughout the day, I don't think you have to worry about your muscles being consumed. This usually only happens when a person is severely undernourished and most all of their fat has been burned up. So if you eat a sufficient diet and have more than 3% body fat, you can do cardio until you are blue in the face.  (+ info)

Is it possible to no have an immune system?

My wife says that since she was on anti-biotics most of her childhood, and also that she was put on Multiple Sclerosis drugs in error, that she has no immune system.
I think it's possible to have a compromised immune system, but she thinks she has NO immune system. She's 32 and still very alive, smokes, drinks a little.
----------

If she had no immune system she would be dead. Just think of how many germs we come into contact with every minute of everyday. Even your own bed is teaming with germs. (not that you are nasty, that is just the way it is)

Without an immune system she could not fight off anything and would die. When people have full blown aids thay have either severely weakend or "dead" immune systems. They have to take a ton of medications to stay alive.

So unless your wife lives in a bubble she has an immune system. It may be weak, but she has one.  (+ info)

Is the Clear Pores acne system safe for very, very sensitive skin?

My skin is incredibly sensitive to acne products, I have been to multiple dermatologists for the past three years and they have not helped.
Typically my face dries out very quickly and can be irritated by acne products, making my facial skin incredibly red and painful.
Would Clear Pores be a safe regimen for my skin type? What if I used only the supplement?
----------

I've been to a dermatologist twice, and guess what? they didn't help at all, and none of the products the doctor could offer worked either. The last non-prescribed product I tried was Dr Murad, and that didn't work. It's so bad when you get your hopes up and you try a new product and it doesn't work, I think part of you dies when that happens. It's a real jungle out there, who knows what actually works, if anything. Think about this: if the doctor stuff didn't work, it seems unlikely that anything u buy in the shops will work. I feel your pain.  (+ info)
