why hepatic necrosis occurs when hepatic artery is ligated accidentally during surgery?

because the hepatic artery is bringing blood with oxygen and food to the hepatic cells. Without food and oxygen the cells just die. Necrosis is the death of cells.

How does skin necrosis from a spider bite takes place? Will it happen from the inside of the skin out?

About 4 or five days ago I noticed a large red pimple on my right thigh that frlt hot to the touch and it has been growing since. Have a little fever that always starts late in the afternoon through midnight. 2 days ago I went to the hosp but they didn't think much of it and prescribed a wide-spectrum antibiotic and Ibuprofen. Today, early evening, I has REALLY grown, very hot to the touch, still feverish, headache, rash on both legs and area closest to the center dot of inflammation is starting to turn very dark red specially under the skin. So, is this how skin necrosis starts, from the inside out? Answer appreciated.
----------

Necrosis is a depression rather than a bulge, it's an ulceration of underlying tissue, bites from a brown recluse are a common cause of necrosis. if it doesn't sink in and turn black i don't believe it can be called necrosis.Everthing else you mention is characteristic of a reluse bit except the pimple.  (+ info)

I have an 80 year old man said to have intraabdominal malignancy with hepatic metastases. What is this?

After imaging he was told it was intraabdominal malignancy with hepatic metastases but no ascites. I wonder what is this. The patient had been feeling dizzy and swolen legs sometimes. It is said it has to do with the liver. Is this a cancer or what?
What happens from now on in treatment and his health?
----------

Yes it is cancer, but it is not liver cancer. Intraabdominal means within the abdomen, so he has cancer within the abdomen that has spread to his liver without any surrounding fluid build up.

The next steps would be to do a biopsy to determine the primary site, run some tumor marker tests and do other radiographic exams to determine if there are any other metastatic sites.

When this is complete then the doctors will be able to discuss treatment options and prognosis. It is not possible to answer those questions without knowing what kind of cancer he has.  (+ info)

How do I find out if my husband has avascular necrosis?

We live in Florida and we have no insurance, he was previously diagnosed by some uncaring big dollar fat cat doctor as having unitary sacrelitis of the hips (which does not exist) after researching I found a disease that matches many of his symptoms, He cannot get out of bed most mornings, he has great difficulty getting around most days, he is 24 and has to walk with a cane, Avascular necrosis is a disesae in wich the blood supply is lost to the bones and the bones eventually die, but how can I find out if this is his issue? Someone please help, if you know anyone with this disease or have any info, please relay any help over to me, thank you.
----------

Since you have no insurance, I would start at the closest county facility to save $. A plain xray of the hip might show radiographic findings suggestive of AVN; he will probably need further testing but that is a cheaper way to start. Also, if you go to a larger medical facility they will be able to get consultations with an orthopedic specialist easier. Since this is not technically an emergency, save yourself the hefty ER fee & try to get into an urgent care or clinic at the facility. Try not to put it off as the damage is cumulative.  (+ info)

Does a torn rotator resemble avascular necrosis when looking at the results of an MRI?

Why would one doc say it's a torn rotator and the other say it's avascular necrosis when they're looking at the same films and doing the same tests?
----------

A couple of thoughts...I'm not a radiologist, but my first question would be - were both of these docs radiologists? Because a torn rotator involves soft tissue and avascular necrosis involves bony tissue, I would think they could be differentiated on the MRI as long as you had a good quality MRI done on an up-to-date machine and read by a radiologist. I'd get a third opinion that includes comments on the quality of the scan. These 2 problems are treated so differently, you really need to find out which one it is.  (+ info)

Does anyone know the dangers of a hepatic adenoma during pregnancy?

I am 25 weeks and have a hepatic adenoma. It is the size of a golf ball. Everything I read says that there is risk of rupture in the third trimester. Anyone know of this?
----------

Hepatobiliary disease, although rare, may present during pregnancy with potential complications for mother and fetus. We present two cases of choledochal cysts and one case of a hepatic adenoma diagnosed in gravid patients. All three patients had acute events or failed medical management and were successfully treated with open resection, excision, or reconstruction during the second or third trimesters of pregnancy without requiring blood transfusions or tocolytic therapy. Although conservative treatment may be indicated in select patients due to the risk of underlying disease, we recommend surgical treatment preferably in the second trimester. With diligent intra- and postoperative management, pregnant patients can safely proceed with major hepatobiliary surgery  (+ info)

Why does steroids cause avascular necrosis of the femural head?

This comes in context of Hodgkin's Lymphoma where prednisolone is give as a drug for it and one of the complication is avascular necrosis of the femural head.
----------

Good question. (femoral)
Here's an excellent analysis from emedicine/WebMD updated recently in August 2008. Various mechanisms are discussed if you read this article, but the bottom line is that no one really knows for sure.

How to fight with massive allergies during the last three months of pregnancy?

How to fight with massive allergies during the last three months of pregnancy? This is the seventh months pregnancy of my daughter.
I want to tell that it is irritating skin rashes/allergies over tummy, arms & legs.
----------

First I would ask my physician if there are any recommended anti histamines for pregnant persons. If you don't want to use that option, nasal rinses made up of just salt water help decongest sinuses for a short time. Menthol and eucalyptus cough drops help with decongestion as well. A steam bath using a cup of apple cide vinegar in a quart of water for your sinuses (put a towel over your head, heat up the liquid, turn off the heat, give it a few minutes so you don't burn your sinuses and put your head over the steam, the towel is to help keep the steam near your nose and inhale). Eating the yoghurt mix that advertises its good for your immune system may help your allergies, (check with your Dr. if there are reasons not to eat that stuff), and lastly, keep away as best you can from the things your are allergic to. Take frequent warm showers and wash well so you are washing off allergins, when cleaning only clean with a wet mop or rag, and have someone else do the vacuuming and wait a few minutes after vacuuming before entering your home so the dust settles. Check you soaps and perfumes, and use only ones that are hypo allergenic and maybe not use perfumes at all. When outside if you have pollen allergies wear a small filtering mask, if you live in the US its going to be cold soon so that shouldn't be an issue unless you are in the south. Stay away from what you are allergic to, treat your symptoms and check to see what the Dr. says about anti-histamines, there may be one out there that is considered OK for mom and baby.  (+ info)
