What is chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD); include examples of diseases, prevention and treatment?

The more common term for it is COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). It includes the diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. These are usually caused from smoking, 2nd hand smoking, genetics or exposure to certain chemicals. Prevention is not smoking, staying away from people who smoke and wearing a mask around dangerous chemicals. Treatment may or may not include the following.... nebulizers which are usually rescue meds and preventative meds, O2, and sometimes diet. Adequate management of this disease can allow the individual to lead a long healthy life.  (+ info)

How to tell the difference in restrictive lung disease from obstructive lung disease?

Need to know the different symptoms that make restrictive lung disease different from obstructive lung disease
----------

Restrictive ----> reduced lung volumes
Intrinsic disease involves the lung parenchyma
Extrinsic disease involves extrathoracic involvement (i.e., neuromuscular disease)

Common symptoms are exertional dyspnea, cough, sometimes hemoptysis, some pleuritic pain.

Obstructive ----> reduced flow rates

Shortness of breath or dyspnea which usually occurs with exercise and can interfere with daily activities. In severe cases, shortness of breath can occur while resting.

Cough with or without the production of sputum.

Coughing blood (haemoptysis).

Chest pain. This may or may not be pleuritic chest pain (that is pain that worsens with the movements of breathing).

Noisy breathing, either wheeze or stridor.

Somnolence.

Loss of appetite.

Weight loss.

Cyanosis, a bluish discoloration of the lips, tongue or fingers.  (+ info)

what r obstructive and restrictive lung diseases?

Restrictive lung diseases are a category of respiratory disease characterized by a loss of lung compliance, causing incomplete lung expansion and increased lung stiffness.

So basically, your lungs don't expand enough and you get shortness of breath.

Obstructive lung disease is a bit more serious...
Obstructive Lung Disease is caused by airway obstruction.

Airway obstruction is a respiratory problem caused by increased resistance in the bronchioles (usually from a decreased radius of the bronchioles) that reduces the amount of air inhaled in each breath and the oxygen that reaches the pulmonary arteries. It is different from airway restriction (which prevents air from diffusing into the pulmonary arteries because of some kind of blockage in the lungs).  (+ info)

What is the difference between restrictive lung disease and obstructive lung disease?

Restrictive is difficulty getting air into the lungs, Obstructive is difficulty getting air out of the lungs.  (+ info)

The increased anterior posterior chest diameter associated with obstructive lung disease is caused by?

a. increased pulmonary blood flow
b. increased expiratory flow rates
c. increased residual lung volumes
d. decreased chest wall compliance
----------

C is correct ... COPD and increased RV are the reason for the "barrel chest" appearance that is a hallmark sign of this disease  (+ info)

Can Social smoking lead to lung cancer or other diseases?

I am a social smoker. Usually 2 at a time when I drink or out with friends. On average I smoke no more than 3 cigarettes a week. This obviously isnt good for my health. Does this behavior increase my chances of lung cancer or other diseases the same way smoking a pack a day can?
----------

Think about it....second hand smoke has been linked to lung cancer. You are inhaling direct nicotine and smoke. Now what do you think?

Yes, it can and does cause lung cancer regardless of how little amount you smoke. You are also at a potential risk for bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, asthma and more. You'll do yourself good if you quit.  (+ info)

Depending on what country you reside in, you should be able to check with your local health department for a resource. Depending on income, the department of human services may have a list of providers for individuals who qualify, and both offices should have translators or access to a translator.  (+ info)

What are some lung diseases and what causes them?

What happens if a lung is taken out?
----------

Well, you're not asking for much are you?

Now as to your other question. A pneumonectomy is done for any number of reasons but you're not asking that. Obviously the patient is left with only one lung and with rehabilitation they can do most anything they want. This is assuming the lung they have left is in good shape. But as long as it's reasonably working they can live with just the one. I don't think they're going to be running marathons but certainly they'll be able to function.

Should you feel sorry for most people who get lung diseases from first-hand smoking?

Unfortunate, yes.
The US government has required that health warnings be placed on cigarettes since 1984.
In the '50s, the negative health effects of smoking were publicised in the US and UK. As far back as the '30s the National Socialist government in Germany published the dangers of smoking and the link with cancer.

These facts may have been discovered in the 50's and earlier, but that doesn't mean Joe Public was made aware of them.  (+ info)
