Oxygen Deprived Brains Repaired And Saved

Science Daily — Scientists from Melbourne's Howard Florey Institute have found special proteins that protect the brain after it has been damaged by a lack of oxygen, which occurs in conditions such as stroke, perinatal asphyxia, near-drowning and traumatic brain injury.


Dr Nicole Jones and her team discovered that during oxygen deprivation, or 'hypoxia', these proteins (HIF1 and PHD2) increase.

These proteins regulate processes like the production of red blood cells and new blood vessels, and the flow of glucose to the brain. Therefore they are involved in preventing further brain damage and repairing damage caused by the initial injury.

This discovery takes the Howard Florey Institute's scientists closer to developing preventative and regenerative treatments for brain damage caused by hypoxia.

Does anyone know someone that hung themselves and survived with hypoxic brain injury?

My husband hung himself I revived him but now has brain damage, It's called hypoxia brain injury. I am sure he was only there for around 5 minutes. The doctors told me he was a vegetable but is slowly recovering it's been 7 weeks, he is talking, trying to walk, he still has emotion but his memory is poor, his coordination is ok but not great. If you have a similar story could you please share it with me? I'd love to know the outcome of these peoples recovery.

No. The brains respiratory center will always send that impulse to breathe via the autonomic nervous system. Holding a blanket up to the face and nose,won't be a problem because if the fabric weave is loose enough to allow enough air to flow through the weave. Natural fibers are better than synthetic materials,the "velour" type fabrics are mostly a plastic synthetic,so I would change the babies blanket to a loose cotton weave etc. Of course,when your baby has a "cold" or respiratory infection,you would want to be more vigilant.Take care. if the brain stem is the only part of the brain functioning, can someone ever recover?

if a small child with an head injury resulting in only the brain stem functioning (the last thing to die in the brain when there has been an injury due to hypoxia) , will they ever recover?
There may be a partial or 'miracle' regeneration, but generally brain cells don't regenerate, or grow back. That is why we lose brain cells all the time, daily, and we accept that they are gone with age.

However in children, some limited unusual or unexpected growth and adaptation may occur, on a very limited basis, not quite enough to be called partial, and again, this would be very unpredicatable without sufficient landmark precedents, only the possibility.

I also believe that the chances are better with hypoxia than from a traumatic brain injury, which would involve more swelling and cerebrospinal fluid depletion.   (+ info)

Mild to moderate cerebral hypoxia generally has little or no impact beyond the episode of hypoxia. Significant cerebral hypoxia is another matter. Outcome will depend on the success of damage control measures, the amount of brain tissue deprived of oxygen, and the speed with which oxygen was restored to the brain.

Cerebral hypoxia that is localized to a specific part of the brain will have damage that will be localized to that region. Long term effects will depend on the function of that portion of the brain. Damage to the Broca and Wernicke’s areas of the brain (left side) generally causes problems with speech and language. Damage to the right side of the brain may interfere with the ability to express emotions or interpret what one sees. Damage on either side can cause paralysis of the opposite side of the body.

Perinatal asphyxia (PA) and its neurologic manifestations are the most important cause of brain injury and neurologic sequelae in full-term infants .... the best predictive risk factors for the neurological prognosis at follow-up are severe PA at birth and/or evidence of encephalopathy in neonatal period ... which leads to poor outcomes neurologically ....  (+ info)

Is it possible to have hypoxia and not know it and would the doctor notice?

Can a person have hypoxia over a period of time and not know it and the doctor not notice it on exam?
It is possible to have a mild hypoxaemia over a period of time especially if one suffers from chronic respiratory disorders, but usually the doc would notice it with the help of a pulse oximeter. If the doc doesnt notice, it is negligence on his part!

What is hypoxia and why did my eye dr. say I might have a slight case?

I went to the eye doctor and he made the comment to the contact lense lady that I have a slight case of hypoxia. When I looked it up online, it had to do with lack of oxygen to the body, but how does that affect my eyes? I have no known health problems (relating to breathing) or anything, but he made the comment about me wearing my contacts while asleep and such. What is it and how does it affect my eyes?
Your eyes get oxygen by being exposed to the air. If you are wearing contact lenses too much then the eyes cannot get enough oxygen and become hypoxic. It has nothing to do with your lungs or general health.

You should rest your eyes, i.e no contact lenses, for at least 4-6 hours a day, and this does NOT include whilst you're asleep, as your eyelids are preventing oxygen getting to the eye just as contact lenses do.   (+ info)
