Is fish oil the answer to heart diseases?

With evidence coming out in favour of fish oil cutting down on cholesterol and triglycerides, can it be a cure for heart attacks?
----------

Omega-3-fatty acid is used together with lifestyle changes (diet, weight-loss, exercise) to reduce the amount of triglycerides (a fat-like substance) in your blood. Omega-3-fatty acid may work by decreasing the amount of triglycerides and other fats made in the liver.
Risk factors for heart attack and coronary artery disease apart from high blood cholesterol and triglycerides include:
* Increasing age (over age 65)
* Male gender
* Diabetes
* Family history of coronary artery disease (genetic or hereditary factors)
* High blood pressure
* Smoking
* Too much fat in your diet
* Chronic kidney disease  (+ info)

Can people get fish diseases/bacteria infections?

When I clean my aquarium, I just gently grab or cup my fish in my hands when I move them to a temporary tank. If my fish had any kind of sickness or disease, can I get them through cuts or small breaks in the skin on my hands?
----------

Possible, however the bigger threat would be an aquatic organism. There are certain species of Mycobacterium that is well documented as causing infections while placing hands in the water with open wounds.  (+ info)

Which type of fish or seafood do you think is better for you?

As far as health topics go, which type of fish is best? Which freezes better, tastes better, has the most nutrients, fights different diseases, has a lower saturated fat content, etc. Or go the opposite direction! Which types of fish are worse for you? Mmmm, I love fish! And all seafood, for that matter!

Except for jelly fish. They suck.

SALMON and TROUT are good for you. But anything you eat should be eaten in moderation.

According to researchers, the combination could be a potentially dangerous food source for some patients with heart disease, arthritis, asthma and other allergic and autoimmune diseases that are particularly vulnerable to an ‘exaggerated inflammatory response.’

Inflammation is known to cause damage to blood vessels, the heart, lung and joint tissues, skin, and the digestive tract.

Researchers said that their research revealed that farm-raised tilapias, as well as farmed catfish, ‘have several fatty acid characteristics that would generally be considered by the scientific community as detrimental.’

Tilapia has higher levels of potentially detrimental long-chain omega-6 fatty acids than 80-percent-lean hamburger, doughnuts and even pork bacon, the article says.

"For individuals who are eating fish as a method to control inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, it is clear from these numbers that tilapia is not a good choice," the authors said

"All other nutritional content aside, the inflammatory potential of hamburger and pork bacon is lower than the average serving of farmed tilapia," they added.

For their study, researchers obtained a variety of fish from several sources, including seafood distributors that supply restaurants and supermarkets, two South American companies, fish farms in several countries, and supermarkets in four states.

All samples were snap-frozen for preservation pending analysis, which was performed with gas chromatography.

The researchers found that farmed tilapia contained only modest amounts of omega-3 fatty acids – less than half a gram per 100 grams of fish, similar to flounder and swordfish.

Farmed salmon and trout, by contrast, had nearly 3 and 4 grams, respectively.

At the same time, the tilapia had much higher amounts of omega-6 acids generally and AA specifically than both salmon and trout.  (+ info)

Is there an association between the consumption of animal products and diseases and cancer?

In other words, can animal products like red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, or milk cause (or negatively effect the risk thereof) heart disease, stroke, cancers or osteoporosis, or even obesity?

Does anyone know where I can find some good information on this subject?

Does eating fish and dairy products together (in the same meal) cause any skin diseases, especially white spot

Are there any food groups that we should avoid eating together in same meal? does doing it cause some disease? answers from field experts please.
----------

Fish and dairy doesn't have any issues for health that I am aware of.

Red meat and dairy does cause some issues. The iron in the meat and the calcium in the dairy tend to bind together. So you don't get the benifit of either. So you would tend to have lower bone density and have iron poor blood if you did this often. (Naturally the kosher keeping Jewish community doesn't do this.)  (+ info)

What is the name of the disease that was caused by mercury in the fish in Japan?

The one where everyone was getting sick and the doctors couldnt figure it out, and it turned out the be the fish. I think it began with a "m".
----------

Methylmercury.

If mercury gets into the water, much of it settles to the bottom where bacteria convert it to the organic form of methylmercury. Fish absorb methylmercury when they eat smaller aquatic organisms. Larger fish absorb more methylmercury as they eat other fish. In this way, the amount of methylmercury builds up as it passes through the food chain.  (+ info)

Fish Oil supplements useless for decreasing chances of heart disease?

I just saw on CNN this morning a cardiologist saying that fish oil supplements are basically useless, that only the actual food source provides the benefits of decreasing stroke and heart disease? Is this so?
I always understood that the omega-3 fatty acids are what provide these benefits, which are included in both the fish oils supplements and obviously the fish themselves....
----------

I think they are somehow right because in the actual food you find different mineral and organic complexes that can't be obtained during chemical reactions in pharma. laboratories.
omega 3 fatty acid can't be bad for your health but it's better to eat the whole complex of vitamins, lipids, proteins, etc.  (+ info)
