What diseases/conditions include dystonia as a symptom?

I was diagnosed with cervical dystonia and I am trying to research to find out how I ended up with this. Thanks for your help.

Torticollis is another name for your condition. Try a google on it. From what I found, it can be secondary to an injury, or it can be hereditary - does anybody in your family have it? Also, like any other neurological condition, it can be related to more serious conditions, like Huntington's disease. Hopefully this will not be true for you. Good luck.  (+ info)

What is the relationship, if any, between Dystonia and Epilepsy?

Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes the muscles in the body to expand and contract involuntarily. This movement disorder may, in some cases be confused with seizures. However, can there be a primary causal relationship between the two? If so, what would that be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
----------

Dystonia can be caused by some of the same things as seizures are. Since Epilepsy is a disorder which covers a broad range of problems that cause seizures the two might be casually related this way. The only one thing that stands out positively is that dystonia can be a genetic disorder. Both can be caused by injury (specifically head trauma), inflammation, and a drug reaction. Since the cause of this is of yet unknown with the exception that it has a genetic connection and can be associated with environmental conditions too. There is allot more info available on wikipedia, and since this sounds more like a homework assignment please do the research that you find necessary. Good luck and God Bless  (+ info)

Has anyone been diagnosed with or know what dystonia is?

Can someone explain to me what the symptoms of Dystonia are and/or feel like? And if their dystonia came from medication side effects or because of something else?
----------

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder in which sustained muscle contractions cause twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal postures. The disorder may be inherited or caused by other factors such as birth-related or other physical trauma, infection, poisoning (e.g. lead poisoning) or reaction to drugs.
Symptoms vary according to the kind of dystonia involved. In most cases, dystonia tends to lead to abnormal posturing, particularly on movement. Many sufferers have continuous pain, cramping and relentless muscle spasms due to involuntary muscle movements.
Early symptoms may include loss of precision muscle coordination (sometimes first manifested in declining penmanship, frequent small injuries to the hands, dropped items and a noticeable increase in dropped or chipped dishes), cramping pain with sustained use and trembling. Significant muscle pain and cramping may result from very minor exertions like holding a book and turning pages. It may become difficult to find a comfortable position for arms and legs with even the minor exertions associated with holding arms crossed causing significant pain similar to restless leg syndrome. Affected persons may notice trembling in the diaphragm while breathing, or the need to place hands in pockets, under legs while sitting or under pillows while sleeping to keep them still and to reduce pain. Trembling in the jaw may be felt and heard while lying down, and the constant movement to avoid pain may result in the grinding and wearing down of teeth, or symptoms similar to TMD. The voice may crack frequently or become harsh, triggering frequent throat clearing. Swallowing can become difficult and accompanied by painful cramping.  (+ info)

What Do You Know About Dystonia: It's a Survey, Not Advice?

Describe dystonia, what you know about it, what you wonder about it, and any personal experiences with it.

I'm trying to find out what people do and don't know about it, for awareness.
----------

It's a neurological movement disorder where people get involuntary muscle contractions which force certain parts of the body into abnormal, sometimes painful, movements or postures. Dystonia can affect any part of the body including the arms and legs, trunk, neck, eyelids, face, or vocal cords and can affect anyone at any age. It is the third most common movement disorder after Parkinson’s disease and Tremor. Although there is presently no cure for dystonia, multiple treatment options are available. No single strategy will be appropriate for every case.  (+ info)

Desiree Jennings so called incurable disease "dystonia" that was caused by a flu shot?

I was wondering if anyone else thinks that the Desiree Jennings dystonia case from taking the flu shot was a hoax or not. There is news out that she has been cured and there is now videos of her on youtube talking normally. I though dystonia was a incurable disease at least thats what the news made it sound like. I'm starting to think that she did this for publicity but i could be wrong.
----------

A number of neurologists found that her symptoms did not match the pattern for dystonia. The pattern seemed more like a psychogenic disorder. Psychogenic does not mean hoax. A psychogenic disorder is real to the patient. Her case was picked up by groups that wanted to exploit the situation.  (+ info)

What is the difference between muscle spasm and dystonia?

Muscle spasm occurs when there is a continuous muscular contraction. Dystonia is when there is no proper muscular tone.  (+ info)
