What signs to look for in dyslexia?

I know that to find out if my son is dyslexic, he should be tested by a professional. But before I go there, what signs should I be looking at to even consider that he is? He is 11 & has always hated to read anything. His penmanship is 'sloppy', he doesn't have the same height on all his letters, he prints and won't try cursiving, he puts larger spaces between the letters in a word and won't put a space between 2 separate words. He gets frustrated whenever I try to talk about it with him. And he says that he can see words in his head but can't write them down on paper in that order. Are these signs of dyslexia or another problem?
How strange you should ask that, because I'm going through that with my 6 year old. He writes his name from the right side of the paper instead of the left, and writes hie letters backwards. I asked the school how you can test for it, and they told me there is no way of knowing for sure. So out of curiosity, I called my son's eye Dr. to see if they could check for it and she said yes they could! I was so pissed the school told me there was nothing I could do. So in two weeks he will go in to get checked. If I were you and he is having this much trouble in school have him checked, if he is OK then talk to the school about putting him in a class to get extra help with reading and writing. I have an expat friend from Toronto, she is dyslexic at age 36. She has no cash at all to spend on expensive programs from up to 3000$ a week. Is there any concrete solution that she can do? Being dyslexic she cannot learn english and cannot get a job at all.
I'm mildly dyslexic. I speak English. She can learn.

I learned to read English by way of phonetics - workbooks.

She has a different way of learning. That's all.

A combination of visual and reading should help her.

I have a person i know that wants to start accepting insurance but i need to know where to go to be able to fill out the forms for him to be able to be accepted insurance

Why does everyone know about dyslexia and no one know shit about dyspraxia?

Dyspraxia affects the neural pathways. It can make you unbalanced, low muscle tone, concerntration problems and sporting difficulties.
I dont know how I got it. I think my brother may have done it when he *accidently* hit me in the forehead with a golf club.
because a lot of time they are misdiagnosed as Dyslexia. Dyspraxia is a lot rarer (actual cases) than dyslexia. It also functions different, but ends with the same result for the most part.

Dyspraxia, from how it was explained to me, is where the information to the brain is jumbled... but it normally isn't a genetic reason. It is either due to medical, or a trauma of some type. It is more misdiagnosed when the trama was at a young age.  (+ info)

Im dyslexic and I just wondered how other dyslexics are effected by their difficulties. I personally can't spell and my hand writing is terrible. Also the short term memory is a bit shaky.
I'm extremely dyslexic, up in the the 90th percentile for dyslexics.

My symptoms are:
I can't spell very well (thank God for spell check)
My downfall in life are p, b, q and d because they all look they same to me
I transpose letters and numbers every time I read or do math
I can not memorize vocab words
I can't recognize some words (ex: in your question you use the word "personally" and the first 10 times I read the question I thought is said "personality")
My hand writing is a disaster zone
I didn't learn to read or write till 5th grade
I read at a 8th grade level now (I'm a freshmen in college) but only a 5th grade level if I have to read out loud
I had a speech impediment when I was little because I couldn't hear some sounds because of dyslexia  (+ info)

How can you tell if a child has dyslexia or some other vision problem?

I tutor a 3rd grader in reading. He tells me he has trouble seeing the words, he confused b and d sometimes, he had to think so hard when decoding words we have just sounded out. His mother has had his vision tested. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
Dyslexia and other learning disabilites are not vision problems, they are brain processing problems. He should see an educational psychologist for testing, the school board may have one available. Otherwise , the child's family doctor or pediatrican can refer him for testing.

Testing is usually not done until grade 3 as some children simply are not ready to read until age nine. If he is still confusing letters and struggling with decoding at this stage, testing should be recommended.  (+ info)
