How can bacterial conjunctivitis be spread other than through sexual contact?

But how can anybody else catch it? Can be transmitted through air droplets, or by door handles, toilet bowls, pets, and then rubbed into your eyes? Or from supermarket fruit, carrier in an food outlet? (Are there are any special health rules?)

Bacterial conjunctivitis is an infection caused by bacteria such as staphylococci, streptococci or haemophilus. These organisms may come from the patient's own skin or upper respiratory tract or they may be caught from another person with conjunctivitis.

You as a medical detective. Doctors just treat the illness. Pillow spread. By young children? Midges? What is the incubation period?

Conjunctivitis is extremely contagious apparently according to doc . I was told to not share towels or any washing equipment and to always wash my hands after touching my eyes. Noone else in my family caught it when i did these things.  (+ info)

Does bacterial conjunctivitis go away on its own?

I'm pretty sure I have bacterial conjunctivitis, and I was wondering if it will clear up on it's own, because I REALLY do not want to go to the doctor. I've been in and out with sinus problems.. So what can I do to clear it up without going to the doctor?

Does the bacterial conjunctivitis reproduce asexually or sexually?

I have to do a project over pink eye and they ask me if the bacteria of bacterial conjunctivitis reproduces sexually or asexually, I've been looking all over the internet and it doesn't say anything about the bacteria reproduction in pink eye
----------

The bacterias that causes pink eye are all asexual:

staphylococci pneumococci and streptococci.

staphylococci is asexual (Regeneration is a specialized form of asexual reproduction; by regeneration some organisms (e.g., the starfish and the salamander) can replace an injured or lost part, and many plants are capable of total regeneration)

pneumococci reproduce by asexual division.

streptococci - reproduces by asexual reproduction along a central axis creating either pairs of bacterium or long chains depending on culture media.

How did I come to this conclusion - I searched the internet to find out what bacteria causes pink eye - the three examples above - then I searched each bacteria individually to find out if they were sexual or asexual.  (+ info)

How long does it take to feel better after being treated for bacterial conjunctivitis?

I tried searching the web on this but couldn't find anything. I know that when you use the antibiotic drops its supposed to burn and itch. But wanted to know if it takes a day or two (or the whole course) to even get some relief. Has anyone dealt with this before and if so please let me know. Thanks.
I just started using the drops today and just wanted to know if anyone like me, that has gone through this before knows the answer. I am asking for early results (less itching, less drainage, less redness). I know it takes a week for treatment.

Maybe at least one week or even longer.I suggest that you should consult to expert for health advice.  (+ info)

I have bacterial conjunctivitis, should I still go to school?

Yesterday my eye was really red in one eye and not the other, and when I came home from school my mom kept telling me to take out my eye crust. I just woke up and my eyes are super crusty. My other eye is red now too, and I'm debating wheter or not I should go to school. My dad thinks I should, because he thinks it's no big deal and that I'm just being too dramatic. My mom thinks that it's a huge deal and she says it's highly contagious so I shouldn't go to school. Should I go to school?
----------

eww, no. go see a doctor before you infect the rest of the world!  (+ info)

Period of Time for Prescribed Antibiotics for Bacterial Conjunctivitis(Pinkeye)?

I believe I now have bacterial conjunctivitis. I wanted to find out from those who had this before and went to a doctor, how long would the doctor prescribe the antibiotics for? Would it be for a full week, or 5 days or somethin? Also, what kind of antibiotic would it be? Would it be some kind of cream that you put under your eye flap or somethin? Any answer would be appreciated. Thanks.
Also, would it be possible to consume alcohol while on the antibiotic drops?
----------

I get the pink eye quite often as I wear contact. It's the debris that gets in between my eye and the contact and I don't clean them like I should or take them out like I should.

They usually prescribe eyedrops and tell you to not wear your contacts if you wear any. It's usually about 5-7 days.

Hope this helps.  (+ info)

Bacterial or viral conjunctivitis?

Doctor gave me vigamox drops. Woke up with my eye really red and a bunch of crust and watery sleep.
----------

Conjunctivitis is inflammation or infection of the membrane lining the eyelids. Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria and viral conjunctivitis is caused by a virus. Vigamox is one of many antibiotic eye drops used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis. The most common side effects include burning, dry or itching eyes, change in vision, decreased vision, dry eye, eye discharge, eye pain, redness of eye, swelling of eye, eyelid, or inner lining of eyelid and tearing. It is also important to try not to touch your eye and wash your hands often, especially if you do touch your eye, to prevent the spread of infection. Also be careful not to touch the tip of the dropper to the eye to avoid contamination. If symptoms don't improve within a few days or get worse, check with your doctor.  (+ info)
