1/4. Ochronotic arthropathy: arthroscopic findings in the shoulder and the knee.

Ochronotic arthropathy is a disorder resulting from the deposition of homogentisic acid derivatives in the articular cartilage and the menisci. Large joints of the appendicular skeleton are preferentially affected. The clinical picture resembles that of degenerative joint disease. We present the arthroscopic findings in the shoulder and the knee in a 40-year-old man with ochronotic arthropathy and discuss the role of arthroscopy in the diagnosis and management of this rare metabolic disorder.

2/4. Arthroscopic treatment of shoulder ochronotic arthropathy: a case report and review of literature.

Alcaptonuria is an inherited hereditary metabolic disorder, which is associated with various systemic abnormalities and related to the accumulation of homogentisic acid and a derived melanine-like pigment in the connective tissues; the latter is termed ochronosis. We present the arthroscopic findings in the shoulder of a 58-year-old female with ochronotic arthropathy and discuss the role of arthroscopy in the diagnosis and management of this rare metabolic disorder.

3/4. Idiopathic chondrolysis--diagnostic difficulties. Report of four cases.

Four cases of idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip in three white girls and one Maori girl are reported. The authors stress the causes why a disease with characteristic clinical and radiographic appearances and normal biochemical findings presents diagnostic difficulties. It is suspected that idiopathic chondrolysis is a metabolic disorder of chondrocytes, triggered by environmental circumstances in susceptible individuals. Idiopathic chondrolysis is probably one of the most common causes of coxarthrosis in women.

4/4. ochronosis: a case report with severe ochronotic arthropathy.

alkaptonuria is a rare inborn metabolic disorder in which ochronotic pigment is deposited in connective tissue and cartilage. Ochronotic arthropathy is the consequence of longstanding alkaptonuria and leads to progressive joint disability. We report a case of a 67-year old man with severe ochronotic arthropathy involving the spine, the knees, the shoulders and the hips.
