1/5. Synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint: varying presentation in 4 cases.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare condition in which cartilage is formed in the synovial membrane of a joint. The manifestations of this benign neoplastic process can mimic many common temporomandibular joint and parotid diseases. Four cases of synovial chondromatosis are presented. In each case, atypical presentation, coexisting joint disease, or both caused diagnostic confusion. The histories and physical examinations were initially consistent with more common joint diseases in each case. Imaging provided some insight into diagnosis and was a definitive indication for surgical treatment. Treatment by subtotal synovectomy and by removal of chondromatous nodules were undertaken in each case. No patient in our series has had recurrence of disease or symptoms after surgical treatment.

2/5. Extraarticular synovial chondromatosis: review of epidemiology, imaging studies, microscopy and pathogenesis, with a report of an additional case in a child.

A rare benign condition of uncertain etiology and pathogenesis, Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is most often seen intraarticularly in adults but only a handful of cases have been reported extraarticularly in children. Symptoms and physical signs consist of pain, swelling, and osteoarthritic changes related to a mass effect. Here we discuss the case of a 9-year-old boy with documented SC of the knee and critically review the epidemiology, Clinical Presentation, Gross anatomy and Microscopic Histopathologic Features as well as the role of Imaging Studies in diagnosis. In addition, this paper reviews Current Pathogenetic Concepts including the infrequent but distinct possibility of malignant transformation.

5/5. Synovial chondromatosis: a case study and brief review.

Synovial chondromatosis is a benign synovial neoplasm, most often monoarticular. A case involving a 25-year-old Hispanic woman with a 2-year history of joint stiffness, locking, and recurrent effusion is presented. The diagnostic evaluation included standard roentgenograms, magnetic resonance imaging, arthrocentesis, and arthrography. She underwent arthrotomy and synovectomy. Multiple small cartilaginous bodies were removed during the procedure. At 3-year follow-up, the patient has not reported any residual problems, except for mild joint stiffness. This paper will discuss the physical findings, diagnostic studies, and management of intra- or extra-articular synovial chondromatosis.
