Nuclear phosphoprotein encoded by the p53 gene (genes, p53) whose normal function is to control cell proliferation and apoptosis. A mutant or absent p53 protein has been found in leukemia; osteosarcoma; lung CANCER; and COLORECTAL CANCER.
