They are most prominent in asteraceae; piperaceae; and rutaceae; and also found in aristolochiaceae; brassicaceae; convolvulaceae; euphorbiaceae; menispermaceae; poaceae; and solanaceae. They are recognized by their pungent taste and for causing numbing and salivation.
