A nonapeptide hormone released from the neurohypophysis (pituitary gland, posterior). It differs from VASOPRESSIN by two amino acids at residues 3 and 8. oxytocin acts on SMOOTH muscle cells, such as causing UTERINE CONTRACTIONS and milk ejection.
