A severe irreversible decline in the ability of kidneys to remove wastes, concentrate urine, and maintain ELECTROLYTE BALANCE; blood pressure; and calcium metabolism. Renal failure, either acute (kidney failure, acute) or chronic (kidney failure, chronic), requires HEMODIALYSIS.
