The presence of an uncomplimentary base in double-stranded DNA caused by spontaneous deamination of cytosine or adenine, mismatching during homologous recombination, or errors in dna replication. Multiple, sequential base pair mismatches lead to formation of heteroduplex DNA; (nucleic acid heteroduplexes).
