The inner portion of the adrenal gland. Derived from ectoderm, adrenal medulla consists mainly of chromaffin cells that produces and stores a number of NEUROTRANSMITTERS, mainly adrenaline (EPINEPHRINE) and norepinephrine. The activity of the adrenal medulla is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system.
