Genieve,
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused by bacteria and are 10 times more common among women than men. The risk factors include - A new sex partner or multiple partners. More frequent or intense intercourse. Diabetes. Pregnancy. Escherichia coli (E. coli) often passed from the anus to the vagina by using toilet paper and wiping in that direction. Wiping in the opposite direction is recommended. Use of irritating products such as harsh skin cleansers. Use of irritating contraceptives such as diaphragms and spermicides. Use of birth control pills. Heavy use of antibiotics. A blockage in the urinary tract (benign masses or tumours). A history of UTIs, especially if the infections were less than 6 months apart.

How can I prevent urinary tract infections?

I seem to ALWAYS get them and I don't know why. I think I have one right now but I don't know how to cure it without going to the doctor because I don't have health insurance. Is there something I can do at home to cure the one I have right now? How do you get urinary tract infections and how can I prevent them? I also heard it can become deadly if you don't cure it, is that true?

Hygiene
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused when bacteria enters, and then infects, the urinary tracts. Bacteria , typically Escherichia coli, living in your colon, are often the cause of UTIs. The bacteria enter through the opening of the urethra and then multiply in the bladder
It is thought that the bacteria can be inadvertently spread from your anus to your urethra . This can happen if, when wiping your anus after going to toilet, the toilet paper comes into contact with your genitals .
The bacteria can then move upwards through the urinary tract, infecting your bladder (cystitis) and your kidneys (pyelonephritis).
The presence of bacteria in your urine does not necessarily mean you will develop a UTI. For example, many people, particularly elderly people, have bacteria in their urine without suffering any ill effects. This is called 'asymptomatic bacteriuria'.

Cranberry found to be effective for urinary tract infection prevention in girls
Urinary tract infections are common in womenand for some women can be recurrent and require repeated doses of antibiotics or even prophylactic antibiotics. Organisms (usually E. coli) that cause UTIs generally gain access to the bladder via the urethra (the pipe connecting the bladder with the outside).

Cranberries, blueberries, lots of fluids.
Bladder infections or cystitis are caused by the bacteria E. Coli getting into the urinary tract. Theses bacteria cling to the cells lining the urinary tract and bladder by using tiny hairlike appendages anchoring to the bladder cells. Some compounds in the cranberries and blueberries incapacitate the molecules by which the E. coli bacteria attach to the cells and they are thereby washed away in the urine.

Important note: Cranberry juice do not cure bladder infectiion for which antibiotics may be necessary. Cranberry juice help prevent recurrence  (+ info)

How long do Urinary tract infections last and how can i be sure i have one befor i go to the doctor?

I have pain in the spots that are symptomatic of Urinary tract infections but i don't know for sure so how can i make sure before i ask to see a doctor about it? How long do they last typically?
I'm 14 and a guy so i have to ask my parents to drive me so i have to be sure. Does any one know if minnesota's laws prevent me from seeing a doctor with out parent concent?
----------

Symptoms of UTI include burining when urinating, having to urinate frequently, and not going much each time. If you think you have a UTI you need to see a doctor. The only way to cure the infection is to take antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. UTIs do not go away on their own. If left untreated, the infection can spread and cause kidney damage and other serious problems. Talk to your parents, and see a doctor.  (+ info)

What is a vitamin I can take to ward off yeast and urinary tract infections?

I seem to get yeast and urinary tract infections very easily. What is something i could get at the health food store to prevent them?? Thanks!
----------

Yogurt is great in attacking those nasty yeast infections. The live and active cultures in them work wonders. As for the urinary tract infections they say that Cranberry Juice works, you can get it concentrated if you don't like to drink the juice.  (+ info)

Why are some people more suseceptible to UTI's (urinary tract infections) than others?

Why are some people more suseceptible to UTI's (urinary tract infections) than others? Does drinking cranberry help and how?
----------

Women in general are more susceptible because the length of the urethra is much shorter than men's, making it easier for bacteria to traverse that length to the bladder. Also, gastrointestinal bacteria can easily make the journey from the anus through the intravaginal opening to the urethra with improper toilet habits (wipe from front to back!). Sexual intercourse may also contribute to introducing bacteria into the urethra. Cranberry is thought to be helpful in that it acidifies the urinary tract (as well as other parts of the body), but I would not rely on that to cure an infection. (Acidification inhibits bacterial growth.) It may be helpful in prevention.  (+ info)

where can I find out about urinary tract infections?

I work for an elderly woman and she asked me about how or why do women get urinary tract infections. I told her I'd look it up on the internet and give her an answer.
----------

tract infections are tricky. it is very common for women to get this kind of infection. many people think the only way to get this infection is byhaving sex. this isn't completely true. tract infections are caused by bacteria getting into the urethra. this kind of bacteria usally comes from the anious. so an infection can be brought on by having sex and not washing yourself right after, some soaps, not cleaning the right way after using the bathroom, not changing your underwear everyday. when a woman getts this infection it doesn't just mean theres bacteria in the urethra. . it also means it could be in the bladder, uritoures, and or the kidneys. seeing how all these organs are vital to the urinary system. i've heard that the reason way women get this infection is because the urrthre is only 3 inches long. men are less likely to get this infection beacause their urethra is 6 inches long and they dont have to wipe the clean themselves. therefore they are not introducing any bacteria to their systems.

the way to per vent the infections are...
- drink plenty of water
-drink crane berry juice
- empty your bladder each time you use the bathroom
- and to cut out too much sugar(bacteria feeds of sugar)
-whipping from front to back
-and clean under wear

Im not a doctor , but if someone does get a tract infection it is very important to see a doctor. the infection can become severe. the infection can back up into the kidneys which will be a lot worse. so you must see a doctor to get antibiotics ASAP.

i hope what i had to say helped a little :)

oh and sorry about the spelling it's 2:30 in the morning so my spelling is a bit shotty.  (+ info)

Is there a link between Sciatica and Urinary Tract Infections?

I have been recently diagnosed with Sciatica. I have also had around 6 reccuring Urinary Tract Infections over the past few months. Both of these problems started at around the same time, and I'm wondering if there is any link between the two, as I have found nothing in my research.

Thanks in advance.
----------

I have had sciatica for years, ever since I broke my tailbone. In all those years, I have had a UTI twice. The two are unrelated. One is a nerve that gets pinched, the other is from a bacteria. However, sex can irritate sciatica and cause UTIs, so if there was a connection, that could be it. Otherwise, it is really just a painful coincidence.  (+ info)

why do i get urinary tract infections a couple days to a week leading up to my period?

Since april (2009) i've been getting urinary tract infections, i didn't keep track of when they happened, but i know that every month since then i've gotten one. all of my periods are normal, never late, always the full cycle. But recently i've started tracking them and they always happen a couple days before my period leading into my period or a week before and leading into my period? WHY? i'm getting worried.
also... i am sexually active. but i don't have any diseases, and i use protection every time.
----------

Hello there Kay!
I understand your frustrations. I get them all the time. There are a few reasons why you are getting them. Before your period, your yeast changes inside of your vagina. I am really not sure why, but all I know is that it does. However, another problem could be sex. It does not mean you or your partner(s) have any STD's. You are supposed to pee no later than one hour after having sex. The reason why is your urine is a natural cleaning agent, and it is sterile. So any bacteria that got up inside you while having sex will be flushed out with your urine. I do it every single time I have sex and it has minimized my amount of UTI's. Trust me it will work. If you are still concerned, you need to consult your physician and he/she can put you on a medication that will take your UTI's away. Have a good day!  (+ info)

Why do i get so many urinary tract infections?

i seem to get urinary tract infections all the time, especially since I started dating my new boyfriend. with my last boyfriend i didn't seem to get them as often. why do i seem so prone to them and what could it be about my new boyfriend that causes more than usual? Thanks!
----------

Women are more often get UTI then man as a result of female urinary tract anatomy. You can't do anything about anatomy, but you can try to prevent recurennce of infection.
The symptoms you described as a result of frequent and prolonged sexual intercourse, and with a new boyfriend called "Honeymoon cystitis". You will find very good explanation of symptoms as well as treatment and prevention in Internet. Start with
http://honeymoons.about.com/cs/femalebody1/a/cystitis.htm

But you have to take it seriously. I would also recommend to see your GYN doctor, so you can discuss your sypmtoms and treatment options with a specialist. And exclude any other possible causes for recurent UTI as well.  (+ info)
