Is tinea versicolor really unattractive on girls?

I had tinea versicolor on my stomach and upper thighs last summer. And I was pretty positive that after a year it had gone away. I'm at the beach for two weeks and noticed it's coming back. It's really annoying and there are paler spots all over my stomach. Is a guy really turned off by this?

That all depends on the guy. I personally wouldn't care. No one is perfect.  (+ info)

What is the best way to treat tinea versicolor?

Answers based on experience only, please!
Thanks for the response, matador 89.
I'm looking for non-prescription solutions. I'm not sure which of the things you listed were prescription or not. Could you or anyone else clarify?

If anyone has non-prescription experience with treating tinea versicolor I would very much like to hear about your experiences overcoming it.

If tinea versicolor - pityriasis versicolor - is severe or doesn't respond to over-the-counter medicine, you may need a prescription-strength topical or oral medication. These medications for tinea versicolor treatment include – for topical use - Selenium sulfide (Selsun) 2.5 percent lotion. Ciclopirox (Loprox) cream, gel or lotion. Ketoconazole (Nizoral) cream or shampoo. For oral use - Ketoconazole (Nizoral) tablets. Itraconazole (Sporanox) capsules. Fluconazole (Diflucan) tablets. Unfortunately, even after the treatment has been successful, the skin colour may remain uneven for several weeks. Also, the infection may return in humid and warm weather. In rare cases, you may need to take a medication once or twice a month to prevent the infection from recurring. Getting rid of persistent tinea versicolor?

I've tried selsun blue on it (what my doctor recommended) and even using it twice a day for a few weeks would lessen the symptoms but not make it go away. I've now had it for about 2 years without being able to keep it gone. Wondering if there are any other safe remedies for this? I'm in my third trimester of pregnancy so I can't be taking pills or anything. Any suggestions would be great, otherwise I'll just wait it out and try again with some medicine after the pregnancy.
----------

I would be careful with using the Selsun Blue, even though your doctor recommended it. I am almost 7 weeks pregnant with my second child and broke out with a rash. I went to the doctor today to be prescribed Selenium Sulfide, which is the active ingredient in Selsun Blue. The warning on the label states:

Selenium Sulfide Lotion should not be used for the treatment of tinea versicolor in pregnant women.

Also note that this is a 2.5% solution and typical anti-dandruff hair products are 1%.

Anyone have Tinea Versicolor and successfully get rid of it?

I have had tinea versicolor for 2 years now and I finally treated it by rubbing foot cream all over it for 10 days. The itching and redness is gone, but its still lighter than the rest of my skin. Its really embarrassing and I dont know how I can go through ANOTHER summer like this. Anyone have any advice or maybe do you think I finally got rid of it??
----------

Yes I do. Have your Dr proscribe Clotrimazole 1% per 10ml I had it for a long time and this worked.
Good luck...  (+ info)

how long does it take to get rid of tinea versacolor when taking Ketoconazole?

What are the details of the skin condition and the drug?
----------

Tinea versicolor is a common fungal infection that often affects adolescents and young adults. The term versicolor refers to the fact that it causes the affected skin to change color and become either lighter or darker than surrounding skin. The most common areas it affects are the shoulders, back, and chest. At times, it can affect folds of skin, such as the crook of the arm, the skin under the breasts, or the groin. The face is usually spared, although sometimes children can get it there. There may be just a few spots or so many that it gives the appearance that the affected skin is normal while the unaffected skin around it seems to have a problem.

TREATMENT:

There are many antifungal agents available to apply to the skin for the treatment of tinea versicolor. Over-the-counter (OTC) remedies include clotrimazole and miconazole. These should be applied twice a day for 10-14 days but come in small tubes and are hard to apply to large areas. Another OTC option is selenium sulfide shampoo 1% (Selsun Blue) or 1% ketoconazole shampoo. Some doctors recommend applying these for 15 minutes twice a week for two to four weeks. Others suggest applying them overnight and washing them off in the morning for a week. This treatment can be irritating, however, and may lead to missing hard-to-reach spots on the mid-back.

There are also many prescription-strength antifungal creams that can treat tinea versicolor, as well as a stronger form of selenium sulfide (2.5%) and prescription-strength ketoconazole shampoo (2%). However, these pose the same application problems as their OTC counterparts.

Oral treatment for tinea versicolor has the advantage of simplicity. A single dose of ketoconazole (brand name Nizoral) or five daily doses of itraconazole (brand name Sporanox) are two therapies your doctor can prescribe.

The affects of the fungal infection can be seen for months after successful treatment. you should be eradicated of the infection within the time you cease taking your perscribed medicine.

What is the best treatment for tinea on heels and on hand?

I have been using anti-fungal creams for a few months now. I keep the areas dry yet this infection keeps coming back. It will seem to go away and come back even though I'm continuing the creams.

gotta get new shoes. Thats the only reson you would get it back if it was cured. You are reinfecting yourself somehow and its usually the shoes. Bleach your socks and get new shoes. Also I put a cup of bleach in the tub with the plug in when showering. works for me....5 years no sign.  (+ info)
