What is the maximum amount of time i should wait to get a tetanus shot?

it's 10 at night and i just stepped on an old rusty nail and i can't remember the last time i got a tetanus shot so i'm thinking i'll wait til tomorrow to get a tetanus shot. will i be alright?
----------

Tetanus is a bacteria. And I can't advise one way or the other whether you can wait or not. If you have had a Tetanus shot in the last 10 to 12 years, that should do alright until tomorrow. BTW. What is the leading carrier of Tetanus in the US? It is cactus needles. Weird huh?  (+ info)

How long should an arm ache after a tetanus shot?

I got a tetanus shot on Monday. It is now Wednesday, and my arm still hurts to move or touch.

I'm concerned because with every other innoculation I've had, my arm has recovered within a day. Is this normal for a tetanus shot, or should I be worried? How long should I let my arm ache for before I visit a doctor?
----------

The pain should ease off in about 3-4 days max. If not, see your doctor.  (+ info)

How can I keep a tetanus shot from hurting so bad?

Tetanus shots hurt like a b**ch. How can I keep it from hurting so much. I need to go and get one.
----------

Take 1 or 2 Tylenol 30-45 mins before your appt. That will help with the initial pain from the injection. After another 4-6 hours take 1 or 2 more. That should help with the after-effects of the medication. Also, keep moving your arm after the injection is given. You should be fine.  (+ info)

How often does one receive a tetanus vaccine?

I was vaccinated as a baby, but I received an additional tetanus vaccine when I was 16. Is that normal?
Thanks, guys.
----------

Generally it's recommended to get a tetanus vaccine as a child, and then a booster shot every ten years. The vaccine you initially get teaches your body how to identify the tetanus toxin, which allows your immune system to protect you in case you're exposed to it. The boosters are necessary because for some things, after a while your immune system starts to "forget" what to react against and you lose your immunity. Giving a person a booster shot every once in a while serves as an immune system reminder. In the case of tetanus, it seems to work well to give people booster shots every ten years.

Making sure you get your tetanus booster is very important. That's because the bacteria that produces the tetanus toxin is present in the soil, so it's pretty much impossible to get rid of, which means you could be exposed to it at any point in your life unless you live in a bubble. The effect of the tetanus toxin is pretty devastating in an unvaccinated person; it causes muscle contractions (called lockjaw). The effect is severe enough that one out of every 20 people who get the reaction in the United States die (see Wiki link below).  (+ info)

How likely is it that my baby will be allergic to tetanus shots?

I am severly allergic to them (anaphalatic shock), and am currently 36 weeks pregnant. I want to get my child immunized, but am worried about the tetanus titer for this reason.
----------

Have you picked a pediatrician yet? You'll need to talk to the pediatrician about your allergy and see what he or she thinks is best for the baby. Usually the tetanus shot is given as a part of a shot...it's diptheria, tetanus and pertussis...but I am sure they can give a vaccine for diptheria and pertussis without the tetanus component.  (+ info)

How long does it normally take to recover from a tetanus shot?

I had to get a tetanus shot about 9 days ago. Although the soreness has decreased, I still have some pain from the injection. I can deal with the pain, but I also continue to have some redness, swelling and heat to the touch in my upper arm. It's been so long since I had a tetanus shot I cannot remember if it is normal for symptoms to last for this long. Other than my arm annoying me I feel perfectly fine. Does anyone know if applying either heat or ice might help?
Thanks for the response, I just want to point out that I am not babying it, I work out and do cardio, I would just like to speed up the healing process if possible.
----------

stop babying it...move like you normally would
If you are really concerned call the hosp or Dr and ask to speak to a nurse to advise you  (+ info)

Can a tetanus shot cancel out the effect of birth control?

My fiance just got a tetanus shot, and we were wondering if whatever is in the shot could counteract the effect of birth control, and possibly allow a pregnancy. Thank you.
----------

I don't think so- the vaccine only immunizes the body against tetanus!  (+ info)
