Every joint, except those of the face and skull, are surrounded by ligaments, which as bands of tough fibrous tissue keep the joints together. Each joint has its own type of sprain - ankle, knee, elbow, etc. but each sprain results from the same thing, sudden shearing force that is too much for the ligaments to cope with. The sign is sudden swelling, the symptom extreme pain and tenderness. Treatment is RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression (like from elastic bandages) and Elevation. Add to this pain medication, as sprains can be very painful.
Also, sprains take time to heal. If not rested properly, they'll never heal. Ankle sprains can be supported and protected by wearing tight lace up boots for six months or so.
Strains are just muscle tears. They can be quite painful, but in general they heal rapidly.  (+ info)

What herbs are good for healing bruises, sprains, and strains?

Or perhaps herbs that help increase circulation. Can they be applied and wrapped directly on the affected area?
----------

When it comes to wounds, grazes, you need something to constrict blood circulation and not help increase it.

Some herbs usually used for wounds, grazes as an external application are

Agrimonia Eupatoria (Agrimony) is a well-known astringent which helps to tighten and constrict tissues and will therefore help to staunch blood flow and diminish blood loss. In addition, the natural properties of Agrimony will assist with recovery and promote the natural healing process of the cellular tissue.

Witch Hazel has a long history of use among Native Americans and is found in numerous commercial skin care and treatment products. Like Agrimony, the natural astringent properties of Witch Hazel are invaluable in the healing process.

Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) According to legend, Yarrow was named after Achilles, the Greek mythical figure, who used it to stop the bleeding wounds of his soldiers.

Calendula officianalis (Marigold) is one of the best and most highly respected herbs in the management of local skin problems. Calendula is an effective first-aid solution for all minor burns and scalds, as well as any skin abrasion. Calendula will also benefit the healing process by stimulating the natural process of healthy skin and tissue regeneration.

For strains & sprains, Many herbal and homeopathic remedies have been formulated with specific ingredients to heal from the inside out – helping to facilitate strengthening of injured ligaments. Arnica is a highly respected ingredient in homeopathic medicine and has powerful anti-inflammatory and tissue healing properties.

Filipendula almaria is another herb that has been used for centuries by herbalists to treat pain with modern research citing this herb as nature’s aspirin! Homeopathic ingredients such as Magnesium phosphoricum and Symphytum officinale can also greatly assist the body in recovering from sports injuries and sprains – with no harsh side effects.

Does any one know any ways to treat sprains and strains?

RICE -- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Really, the only way to heal a sprain (which is a stretch or a tear of a ligament), or a strain (which is a pulled muscle) is to rest. Continuing to exercise will only irritate the affected area more, and lengthen the healing time.

Sprains can be very serious injuries, resulting in a complete tear of the ligament. If you continue to have trouble walking or moving the joint, or the swelling has not gone down, see a doctor.

You can also take over the counter anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs - Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) to help reduce swelling and control pain. Common ones include ibuprofen and Aleve.

You can help to avoid sprains and strains by stretching thoroughly before and after exercise, and being aware of your body and its limitations.  (+ info)

Has anyone experienced any increase in sports injuries, sprains, strains, and tears after taking creatine

I've been taking creatine for about 4 months and I notice I'm having more strains, sprains and more muscle type injuries when I run, workout, or play sports. Before I started taking creatine I would never get these type of injuries. I can lift more now but at what cost. I plan to leave the creatine alone and see if things get better without it.
