If someone has an iron deficiency, will a nickel rubbed on their skin leave a gray mark?

My friend says that rubbing the edge of a nickel on the skin of someone with an iron deficiency will leave a gray line. But it hasn't worked on anyone. Is it because it doesn't work or because we're just not low on iron?
----------

No. Where does this crazy stuff come from anyway?  (+ info)

How do you develop a potassium deficiency?

I was 19 when I was diagnosed with a potassium deficiency. How is that possible? Does your body just stop producing potassium?
----------

There can be more than one reasons of potassium deficiency (hypokalemia) in a person such as lower level of Potassium in daily diet (i.e. insufficient potassium consumption), excess potassium excretion through bowel motions or urine, if a person is undergoing medication that as a side effect causes lowering in Potassium level in body, if a patient is suffering from problems such as diabetic ketoacidosis, related to renal salt transporters (Bartter Syndrome or Gitelman Syndrome), it may lead to hypokalemia, if a person is suffering from diseases which cause excessive excretion of potassium through bowel motion or urination can lead to hypokalemia etc.  (+ info)

Will my hair and nails get prettier if I get 100% of riboflavin a day?

I'm going to drink enough soy milk everyday to get 100% of riboflavin. I was wondering if this would make my nails stronger and my hair healthier/thicker and grow faster?

How long do I have before I put myself at risk of iron deficiency anaemia?

I am planning to go on a 4 - 5 week diet that will probably consist of half (or less) of my daily iron requirements, will this be enough to give me iron deficiency anaemia?
----------

I have anemia it stinks. You are cold all the time and feel weak and tired. So, you should take the tablet for iron You are at risk if you do that for 4 or 5 weeks, that is how long it took me to get it. And plus I don't understand why you would be going on a diet with little iron... it's just not healthy...  (+ info)

How many people have you met with an actual protein deficiency?

I've met none. So weird that this protein deficiency thing is such a problem (according to people who have never researched veganism) yet I haven't met a single vegan with a protein deficiency. Maybe I'm just meeting the lucky ones. ;)
----------

It is extremely easy to get adequate protein on a vegan diet and very rare for protein deficiencies to occur in places where people have access to a variety of plant foods. Protein deficiencies occur primarily in places where people don't have much access to food and they don't eat much variety (for example, they only eat rice).  (+ info)

How do i know if i have a certain vitamin deficiency?

5 months ago I dyed my hair, since then I have been shedding hair. I try to find the culprit, but can't. So I'm wondering if I have a vitamin deficiency somewhere? I have been taking pre natal vitamins since then, but am still shedding. I not under any stress. Does anyone know what this could be from? And if it is a certain vitamin deficiency than what test need to be run and who should i go to too see what I am lacking? Also, all blood work came back fine.
Also, hair is coming out by the root, or the little white bulb at the end. I don't know if thats the same.
----------

As a hairstylist, I first evaluate the hair condition. If it's not hair loss due to breakage from damage, I ask the following:

Are you wearing your hair in a pony tail more than you used to?

Are you wearing your hair curly more often?

Are you shampooing less frequently?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, then it might just be that you only see your hair shed when you shampoo it. If hair is straight & you have your hands in it a lot, you won't notice when you drop hair.

Have you just had a baby/pregnancy?
Hormonal changes can cause temporary hair loss. Your body will correct itself in time.

Do you have an eating disorder? If you're not getting the proper nutrition, your body will not waste resources on producing hair (even if you take vitamins).

If this doesn't apply to you, I suggest you re-visit the blood work. Hypo-thyroidism can cause hair loss. Doctors argue about what's considered a normal level of TSH. Ask for a copy of your recent bloodwork to be mailed to you. It might be that what one Dr considers normal, another won't. You can read more by following the link below.

I was just looking at your history of questions. You sound like you could have a color allergy. This can cause scalp breakout, patchy hairloss, and an overall aggrivated scalp.
Oddly enough, I developed a color allergy (yep, I'm a hairstylist who can't color my hair) around the same time I was diagnosed with hypo-thyroidsm.
Doctors can't test for this allergy, you just have to monitior your own level of sensitivity.
Good luck!  (+ info)

Can vitamin and protein deficiency be the cause of my depression?

Or is it the symptoms of the deficiency that is causing it? I have been feeling extremely tired, having trouble staying focused and just not thinking clearly, in addition to nightmares, crying, etc... I had some lab work done and I have several deficiencies to deal with B-12, D, iron, protein. Not sure if I should just try to deal with these and the rest will fall into place or if I should try treating depression at the same time.
I did see a doctor or I wouldn't have had the labs drawn and know what the problem is. But I don't think doctors are complete gods and think that sometimes they over treat people. I was kinda looking for a been there done that this is what worked for me advice.
Thanks to the rest of you who actually read my question. I just don't want to be over treating and get started on a medication that I will become dependant on if I don't need to. I am not taking any other medications at this time that could be causing the problems. I know what is the cause of my deficiencies I just thought that it was under control but apparently I am going to have to supplement my diet even more to compensate.
----------

not getting adequate protein is a big problem; you need protein to make serotonin (i call it the 'happy hormone'). you would be surprised how much better feel when you are properly nourished. just treating the deficiencies will make you feel better but it may take a while. if you are severely depressed where it is interfering with your job and home life or if you are suicidal at all' treat the depression by all means! when your nutritional problems are under control, you can wean off the anti-depressants.

hope this helps!  (+ info)

Does a deficiency of vitamin K lead to Parasites and Candidiasis or is it vice versa?

Does a lack of vitamin K create an environment favorable for parasites and candida, or is it the opposite. Do parasites and candida lead to a deficiency of Vitamin K?
----------

From what Ann Louise Gittleman states in one of her books on detoxing, Vitamin K is produced in the small intestines. If one had a compromised intestinal flora due possibly to parasites and/or candida, then it makes sense that one would not be able to produce Vitamin K.

I've also read that the B Vitamins are responsible for producing strong stomach acid and a lack of adequate stomach acid can allow parasites, and bacteria to grow.  (+ info)
