what is a peritoneal occlusion cyst and will it stop me having i.v.f treatment?

I have had 3 major surgeries and lost my second child due to premature labour. I now have reaccumulation of fluid which is a peritoneal occlusion cyst. I am very worried the fluid contains the left ovary which is held by strands of tissue to the external capsuel of the cyst. the ovary itself is otherwise normal.
----------

A peritoneal inclusion cyst is a complex mass that consists of an ovary trapped in multiple fluid-filled adhesions (scar tissues). They're benign. On sonography one looks like a spider (the ovary) in a spider web.

Because they're non-malignant, a conservative reatment approach is usually taken. However, PICs can cause infertility and surgery is often used, especially is they're causing pain and abdominal distention.

Surgical options include open resection, laparscopic drainage and percutaneous darinage. But there's a 30%-50% recurrence of the cyst. A combination of drainage and oral contraceptives may be the most effective treatment.

A common initial approach is the use of pain medications along with oral contraceptives. Cyst aspiration (drainage) and laparascopic adhesiotomy (removal of scar tissue) can performed later.

Will having a peritoneal inclusion cyst stop you from having IVF? You may not be a candidate for in vitro with this condition. I strongly advise you to speak to your reproductive specialist, OB/Gyn or whoever it is who is managing your condition. Yours is a valid question but not one for Yahoo! Answers. They will know far better than I.  (+ info)

Is anyone using peritoneal dialysis and if so what are the pros and cons?

The main types of dialysis are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Both treatments require your active participation. Take a look at the Mayo Clinic's link to see how they compare. Peritonitis, an infection of the peritoneum and abdominal cavity, is the most common problem for people receiving peritoneal dialysis.  (+ info)

Do doctors and medical business establishments make more money from hemodialysis than peritoneal dialysis?

My guess is hemo for doctors.

Maybe more for a business that rents a night time dialysis machine.  (+ info)

I am on peritoneal dialysis and sometimes the effluent smells funny. Why?

It smells yeasty.
----------

It's hard to say what the source of the odor is, if you are smelling the chemical of the effluent, or if the odor is related to an infection. Both of those are possibilities. If you note the odor and the solution is cloudy, then infection is more likely. The best person to evaluate this would be your nephrologist. There really shouldn't be a noticeable odor, and not being able to actually smell it, it's impossible to say otherwise. Sorry.  (+ info)

when on peritoneal dialysis will my stomach swell depending on how many litres of fluid i am prescribed?

No, your abdomen will not swell. You will have a chart monitoring the input and output liquids go in and out. It is possible that there are more input than output. When that's the case, water usually settle down in the lung causing pulmonary edema, ankle and sacrum causing pitting edema. However, the fluid will not stay inside the abdomen, unless there is a problem with the peritoneum.

Hopefully, that helps  (+ info)

on peritoneal dialysis machine. Please how do you get rid of the cramping when it draining. Im in lots of?

pain when its draining. does anyone have any ideas on how to stop the cramping. it only last for 4 or 5 min. but it feels like forever
also we asked the nurse, she is knew at peritoneal training. She doesn't know. she has asked other nurse but there not sure.
----------

One thing you can try when draining is to clamp of the line for a few minutes to allow your body to get used to what you've drained and then finish training. Another thing to think about. Do you think you may have gained weight? If you don't alter your prescription and keep the same dry weight you can cramp. You may also need to change the dialysate to something more hypertonic, if your body gives up fluid easily.  (+ info)

has anyone been through peritoneal dialysis?

i would like to know if during the day would be a great option for me and what is the pros and cons of it?
----------

If you are going through with dialysis, it is not because it is a good idea. it is because you need it to live. The pro about dialysis is that it will filter out the waste product of your blood and you will live. there are lots of cons. they are:
1) it takes 3 to 5 hours for 1 session and you need to go to about 3 sessions per week. this impacts your social and work life.
2) dialysis can not replace a real kidney. there are some proteins that dialysis can not remove in your blood and in time they will build up causing health problems such as stiff/painful joints.
3) dialysis only extends your life while you wait for a transplant. People live around 10 years on dialysis because like i said dialysis can not replace a real kidney.
4) the tube used for dialysis creates a opening for bacteria to infect.
5) dialysis affects people mentally such as thoughts about ones attractiveness. It may reduce sex drive also because of this.
althought there are lots of cons about dialysis, the biggest pro is that dialysis can help you live longer. peritoneal dialysis is better than having the line inserted into the arm in my opinion. the vein that the line needs to be inserted into usually causes problems and people have to go to surgery to repair that vein.  (+ info)
