What is the difference between hemodialysis & peritoneal dialysis?

"Hemo" means blood. Hemodialysis is when the patient's blood passes through a dialyzer (where the wastes and extra fluid are removed from the blood). This dialyzer is attached to a dialysis machine. A hemodialysis treatment usually takes around 4 hours and occurs 3 days/week. It is the most common type of dialysis.
With "peritoneal dialysis", a dialysis solution is placed in the peritoneal cavity (via a catheter). The person's wastes and extra fluid then pass from the patient's blood directly into the peritoneal cavity and then later removed via the catheter. Peritoneal dialysis is usually done at home.
The term "acute dialysis" usually refers to dialysis that occurs when a patient is in the hospital (when "acutely" ill).  (+ info)

What is the benefit of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis?

Both types take the place (only partially though) of normal kidney function in the event of kidney failure. Hemodialysis is usually 3 times a week, from 3-4 hours per treatment, requires 2 needles each time and it's usually done in an outpatient center. Peritoneal dialysis is usually done every day, either during the night when sleeping or throughout the course of an entire day, can be done at home, can maintain the blood chemistries to nearly normal, and allows for a more liberal diet and fluid intake.  (+ info)

Is anyone using peritoneal dialysis at home? What kinds of problems have you encountered?

I have a client of mine on peritoneal dialysis. The main thing to watch out for is peritonitis which can occur when bacteria invades the peritoneal cavity by contact or airborne contaminants. The other thing is the special diet in which weight gain is a major factor. Anyone can be taught to do it and it can virtually be done anywhere. No more trips to the dialysis clinic. Good Luck!  (+ info)
