What happens to muscles in the disease muscular dystrophy?
What is Muscular Dystrophy?
The muscular dystrophies (MD) are a group of more than 30 genetic diseases characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles that control movement. Some forms of MD are seen in infancy or childhood, while others may not appear until middle age or later. The disorders differ in terms of the distribution and extent of muscle weakness (some forms of MD also affect cardiac muscle), age of onset, rate of progression, and pattern of inheritance. (

If you are a male diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is it possible to have kids?
My boyfriend is diagnosed with this disease and would like kids someday but is not sure if that is EVEN possible or IF he even could, will there be a chance his offspring could get this as well? If that is the case he wouldn't even chance it as he does not want anybody else to go through what he has.
----------
Yes, it is possible for him to father children. However, it would be highly advisable for you to have some genetic counselling/testing to ensure you are not carrier of the condition as if you are, then you have a one in four chance of having a son with the condition and one in two chance of having a daughter who is a carrier. You may think that there is no history of MD in your family but you never know. (

How likely is it for someone to get muscular dystrophy if....?
My friend has a history of muscular dystrophy in his family. His grandmother had it, his mother had it and his uncle now has it (2 out of 4 of his grandmothers children were affected). What are the chances of him having muscular dystrophy if his grandmother and mother had the disease and his father does not, nor does his fathers family have has a history of MD. I know this is vague but I just was an idea.

Why is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy considered a genetic disorder?
Someone close to me has this disease, but i can't find anywhere why it's considered genetic. Could someone please help me out?
----------
DMD is caused a mutation in the gene for dystrophin, which is located on the X chromosome. Becker muscular dystrophy is also caused by mutations in the same gene, but it is considered milder than DMD. The type of mutation determines if the personal will have DMD or BMD. Go the Muscular Dystrophy Association website to learn more about it (www.mda.org). (

stem cell created from umbilical cord blood can help muscular dystrophy?
as i know, umbilical cord blood can created stem cell that can be cure to many disease. it is because it can combine with other stem cell without problem. so if muscular dystrophy patient (which is do not have dystrophine because their stem cell can't create dystrophine in their body) receive umbilical cord blood stem cell, would the cell develop the dystrophine? if it true, i think it would be great to muscular dystrophy patient like me. sorry if my english was bad.

I don't think this is possible in current medical technology, great question! (

Why is Muscular Dystrophy a Neurological Disorder?
I'm doing some research for neurological (nervous system) disorders, and one of them is Muscular Dystrophy. But this disease affects muscles... I can't find where or why it's considered a nervous system disorder. Any ideas? (this is for a Grade 12 biology class by the way)
----------
At first I was stumped as well, but then I found the answer. The term neurological disorder is misleading in that it makes us think that only the nervous system should be affected, and since muscles are not a part of the nervous system, it would not count. However, neurological disorders affect "the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems, including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle."
Since muscle is included with the problems associated with the nervous system as a whole, it would count as a neurological disorder as well. I hope this helps some. (

What is the difference between muscular strength and muscular endurance?
We were in gym and the gym teacher told us to lift a lot of weight and a few reps to build muscular strength. Then another day he told us to lift a little weight and a lot of reps to build muscular endurance. What is the difference between the two? What does each help with?
----------
Endurance is the ability to contract over a longer time. Strength is the ability to contract with more force. Actually there are a number of different kinds of muscle fibers. The strength part applies somewhat to all of them but particularly to the "white fiber" which mainly functions in strength. Endurance is important is building the blood supply that all muscles need and providing exercise for your heart and lungs as well. (
