Hello...does she constantly stick her hand(s) in her mouth and bite them? My daughter has Rett Syndrome and she does this. Microcephaly, and nonverbal are symptoms and girls with RS are often misdiagnosed with CP. Has she been tested for RS? I have solutions to stop it in my daughter but need more info so write to me offline.  (+ info)

can surgery help child with microcephaly?

can a child with microcephaly have surgery to open up the skull and give the brain more room to grow to its normal size?
also, SKULL not growing right or the BRAIN or BOTH? please no text book answers, i want it straight.
----------

I have not enough experience on that specific subject, but, i have read that if microcephaly due to craniosynostosis (premature fusing of the joints (sutures) between the bony plates that form an infant's skull) and is detected early, treatment may include surgical opening of the sutures to let the brain grow normally.

Has this been diagnosed by a physician? I ask, because we sometimes see children whose heads' circumference fall into the 2nd percentile and they are normal children, just with small heads.

There is a lot of useful info on the following link, sorry i cannot help you more.

What is the life expancy of someone with Microcephaly?

My guess would be the same as anyone who would be considered normal. If you or a family member is born with this, they should be seen by their doctor for most of their lives for checkups.
If your not sure of it's developing stages, you should seek specialist to help you learn how to deal with it.  (+ info)

Is anyone familiar with microcephaly?

my granddaughter has been diagnoised with microcephaly, and will need surgery on her head to open up the sutures, so her brain can grow. has anyone else experienced this, and what was the outcome?
----------

Microcephaly is a medical condition in which the circumference of the head is smaller than normal because the brain has not developed properly or has stopped growing. Microcephaly can be present at birth or it may develop in the first few years of life. It is most often caused by genetic abnormalities that interfere with the growth of the cerebral cortex during the early months of fetal development. It is associated with Down’s syndrome, chromosomal syndromes, and neurometabolic syndromes. Babies may also be born with microcephaly if, during pregnancy, their mother abused drugs or alcohol, became infected with a cytomegalovirus, rubella (German measles), or varicella (chicken pox) virus, was exposed to certain toxic chemicals, or had untreated phenylketonuria (PKU). Babies born with microcephaly will have a smaller than normal head that will fail to grow as they progress through infancy. Depending on the severity of the accompanying syndrome, children with microcephaly may have mental retardation, delayed motor functions and speech, facial distortions, dwarfism or short stature, hyperactivity, seizures, difficulties with coordination and balance, and other brain or neurological abnormalities. Some children with microcephaly will have normal intelligence and a head that will grow bigger, but they will track below the normal growth curves for head circumference.  (+ info)

A16 old girl has microcephaly. She looks normal now and is smart, but will she look out of proportion in future?

She knows how to read and write but has trouble with simple math like multiplication and division. She really looks great and is 5'4 95lb whitehispanic talks and walks completely normal, doesn't have any speech problems. Her ears, nose, eyes, and eye brows look normal. But will she allows stay like that, or eventually will her face look too big compared to her head and can she develope mental retardations in the future? Is there types of microcephalus that aren't as damaging or noticable as others?

How can I help a person suffering post-partum depression?

My twin sister is suffering it right now, & she has 3 kids under age 4, & the 3-yr. old suffers microcephaly, & the 1 yr. old suffers eczema, & she just had a newborn. & what makes the situation worse is that her husband left her & he didn't even care about seeing his 3rd child born, & he thinks that's funny. He also thinks it's funny to pump her up with several babies & leave her to struggle with them alone. I'm worried because she told me that she gets so frustrated that she has thoughts about hurting the kids. & when I talk to her on the phone, she screams at them & calls them demonic babies & makes threats to hurt them. She can't handle taking care of them by herself, & she needs help to take care of the kids. I see why she's frustrated. & she keeps dwelling on being depressed about him leaving her & abusing & manipulating her.

BTW, I live out of town, so I can't help her physically, & I don't know what effective advice to give her. I hate to see her kids get taken away.

First of all- it's normal to want to throw your baby out the window or slam them against a wall when they cry non-stop- what's NOT normal is to act on it... Your sister is overwhelmed- overtaxed-tired and depressed- rightfully so! Does she have any other family in the area? Can she afford day care? If not there are a lot of programs and places that provide services on a sliding scale... What her husband did was crappy and he's a jerk but if she dwells on it she can't be productive for her kids... Also there are programs out there that offer free sterlization to women over a certain age if they've already had so many kids- you can probably look into that for her so she doesn't have to deal with the prospect of having any more children accidentaly (not that her children were accidents but you know what I mean).

Your sister needs a good lawyer so she can take her x to the cleaners- he owes child support on those children since he helped bring them into the world! Even if he doesn't pay- if he ever has a bank account anywhere the gov't can garnish it and his paycheck for back child support.

It's a shame there are men like that out in the world and good women like your sister get caught up with them... but it also sounds like she's got a strong sister on her side to help her through these rough times.

Maybe you can do some of the leg work for her? Research some sliding scale counseling services? Childcare services? Is she on WIC? That would help a lot with formula and cerals... If she's low income then she could get food stamps or maybe some welfare- I know it's never enough but at least it's something right? Since you can't be there physically and she's clearly busy with the children maybe doing this research for her and then providing her with the information is the best thing you can do right now?

Other than all that I think the next best thing would be for her to leave the kids with family or a friend for a weekend so she can get some r&r!

Good luck and best wishes to you and your sister!  (+ info)

Do I have microcephaly or something?

Help!!! This is going to sound stupid but im scared I might have Microcephaly! Im a 15 year old male and I just measured my head circumference (which turned out to be 21 inches) and compared it to the percentile chart and im less than below normal for my height and gender. Could it be microcephaly? Ive heard that not everyone with it has neurological problems. Acording to my mother we have small heads in our family? Also I had Plagiocephaly when I was born, my head is still quite flat at the back and it bumps up slightly on the top, but could that have cuased it? Do I have it?!
