Is the supplement Serra Gold a systemic enzyme?

I am currently taking Serra Gold to break down my old keloid scars resulting from acne. Is this a systemic or digestive enzyme supplement? And how long would it take to dissolve the keloid? I've had it for about two years now.
----------

Serratiopeptidase is a proteolytic enzyme. It will survive the digestive tract.

I can't find any decent studies showing that it is effective for anything. Its purported to be beneficial for pain and inflammation, I don't know how its supposed to help with acne scarring. If you have any information on how serratiopeptidase dissolves keloids, I'd be keen to see it. Good luck.  (+ info)

How can I tell if I have systemic poison ivy?

I developed a poison ivy rash on my hand a couple weeks after I went hiking. Was prescribed an antibiotic, really strong cortisone pills that make me drowsy, and a steroid cream (Zanfel didn't work). The original rash is starting to heal now (went through all the phases of bumps, oozing, and now peeling). However, I am noticing little bumps on other parts of my body that look like bug bites and could be new rashes developing (very itchy!). Could I have systemic poisoning, or am I just in contact with whatever item(s) I was originally exposed to with the oil on it?
----------

Could be a reaction to the corticosteroid pills. This type allergic reaction is fairly common - purplish bumps of various sizes depending on which steroid and how much ingested. If this is what is going on it will resolve as soon as you quit the steroids. Probably from the pills and not the cream, but could be either.

Allergy to corticosteroids is becoming increasingly recognized. Diagnosis is difficult because of frequently false-negative patch tests. The optimum concentration and vehicle for patch testing with pure corticosteroid has still not been established. The patch test results of 19 patients with allergy to corticosteroids seen at the Skin and Cancer Foundation in Sydney, Australia, were analysed. It was found that patch testing with the patient's corticosteroid in the commercial cream base gave a greater yield of positive results than testing with the commercial corticosteroid ointment or with the pure corticosteroid in either petrolatum or in alcohol. Tixocortol pivalate, and to a lesser extent budesonide, were useful for detecting allergy to hydrocortisone, but not necessarily other corticosteroids. Delayed positive patch tests were often seen, showing the importance of carrying out a late reading. The repeat open application test (ROAT) with the patient's own corticosteroid was found to be a simple, useful diagnostic test.

Can an untreated vaginal yeast infection lead to a systemic yeast infection?

I'm getting scared..I left a yeast infection untreated for a long time and only getting it sorted out now...I have a couple of other symptoms of systemic infection too but only about three or four and some of them, like fatigue and muscle aches might just be something different as I don't get them often.
Please help, I'm scared! Going to the doctor next week but I just want to know if it's possible if an untreated vaginal infection leads to a systemic infection?!
----------

Systematic yeast is caused by severe immune disorders like HIV. It isn't caused by leaving a yeast infection untreated. I'm pretty sure your fine, if your still concerned, have your doctor test you for systematic yeast.  (+ info)

Can a systemic viral infection present with a bacterial picture in the CBC?

A 21/M patient presented with one day fever and has no apparent focus of infection. Chest and lungs are clear, urinalysis is unremarkable. CBC shows a bacterial picture though. Can I still diagnose the patient with SVI?
----------

Yes, because a fever can be caused by either. Bacterial cytotoxin causes fever as well as a virus.  (+ info)

anyone out there have a baby with mastocytosis?

I have a son, he has mastocystosis, I haven't been able to connect with other parents that have childern with the same condition, does anyone know of any support groups? In the southern california area?
----------

I had mastocystosis and found that there are some links for help, support and information on [email protected]. I'm in SoCal too, but do not know of any local support groups, but will put out some feelers to see whether anyone else knows of any. For the time being, join the urticaria group, make a posting with your question and do a query on infant mastocytosis. I feel for you, I cannot even imagine what it would be like to be a baby with masto, it was hard enough being an adult taking 8 ampules of gastrocrom a day! Good luck and God bless.

There are support groups listed on the Mastocytosis Society webpage: http://tmsforacure.org/  (+ info)

Can Systemic LUPUS Erythematosus cause swelling in ONE HAND ONLY?

The fingertips of my right hand are swollen, even turning purplish yesterday. My left hand is fine - no change. And my feet aren't swelling, either. Just the finger tips of my right hand.
Or it might be scleroderma.
----------

You might need a venus doppler test to see if you have good blood flow to that hand. Blue finger tips indicate poor blood flow.  (+ info)
