Anemia...iron pills not working?

I have anemia and leukopenia. My doctor told me to take iron pills for my anemia 5 months ago, but I still feel very tired and weak all the time. Ive had two more blood tests but my hemoglobin is still low and my doctor is telling me to keep taking the iron pills and I'll start to feel better. Is there anything else I could do besides taking the iron pills? I'm a university student and its hard enough doing well in school without having absolutely no energy to do anything.

i know exactly how u feel. i have no iron in my blood so i go in for infusions. you shojuld talk to your doc abut iron infusions because they work better than iron pills. best of luck  (+ info)

Need Help.?

My lil nephew is in the hospital he is 1 year old and the doctors are taking blood out about 20 cc of blood everyday, Is that right? The doctors want to give him a bone marrow transplant, because they think he has leukopenia. and they also want him to go through chemotherapy, is that right because he doesn't have cancer? What should we do?
----------

Ok. They are taking that much blood bc they need that much to do the tests. I suspect they are running daily complete blood counts with a differntial on the white blood count, as well as a chemistry panel, and possibly a couple other things.

Leukopenia is simply low white blood count. Do they know why there is insufficient white blood count?

Bone marrow/stem cell transplants can be used to hopefully 'cure' any kind of blood disease or malfunction. And yes, they have to give chemo, and probably radiation as well. Even thogh he doesnt have cancer, the chemo and radiation are the only way to kill off the existing bone marrow so that donor cells can get in there and engraft.

As a child, he should have no problems in finding a cord blood donor, and cord blood has the highest success rate.

Dont go through transplant without having answers, as to what he has exactly and what is causing it. There are a lot of risks involved.

Edit: I know the person below me said he had cancer of the blood. Well, thats leukemia, and it may or may not be. There are a lot of other diseases and disorders than can cause leukopenia. Actually, with leukemia the patient *typically presents with a sky high white blood count, but a low neutrophil count on the differntial.

Also, if transplant is being recommended, you are already seeing or being reffered to a hemotologist/oncologist. That type of docs are the only ones qualified to oversee the transplant.

Acid Reflux & Stomach Cancer?

Okay, so Acid Reflux is a genetic problem in my family. My father has it, my grand-father has it, and now I have it.
I went to the doctor recently and they diagnosed me with it. I know all about drinking water, milk, eating anti acid tablets.
The only issue is that along with my Acid Reflux (Which is getting progressively worse..) I have Thrombocytopenia (Lack of platelets in blood) and Leukopenia (Lack of white blood cells in blood)
Last summer, I ended up in the hospital, and I go to the doctor every other month for blood tests and I have for about a year now.

I'm only 15.. With routinely blood exams and I constantly cough, breathe quickly and feel dizzy.
Almost always..

TOO LONG DIDN'T READ
-Acid Reflux, Thrombocytopenia, Leukopenia, Dizziness, Rapid Breathing, Vitamin D and K deficiency.Age 15.
(I take about 10 vitamins a day and I'm constantly nibbling on green leafy vegetables.)

QUESTION
-If I'm only 15 with this, what are my chances of getting stomach/throat cancer when I'm older? I've had these problems for about a year now. Is there anyone else out there who has a similar situation and what did you do?
And if it helps at all, I'm 5' 4" and weight 98lb. I can't eat a lot of foods because of what it'll do to my stomach but I still maintain a pretty healthy diet I think.
Stop posting links that won't help..

I answered a question with similar thoughts like yours. So, I'll tell you what I told her. She too was a young girl only her concern was for her mom. Acid reflux has been known to cause cancer. Cancer of the stomach or esophagus. However, I've had this since my 20's. I have bleeding ulcers as well. I'm on medications that prevent excessive reproduction of stomach acids. I've had many, many tests. Vit K deficiency would happen with a bleed. Vit K is a clotting vitamin and if not enough in your body, then bleeding can be a problem. Don't believe everything you read on medical sites. Your best place to get answers you need in your case is directly from your doctor. He/she knows you, Knows how your stomach work. The internet can only give you a broad range of common causes of and some not so common of acid reflux.. You then scare yourself and think the worst. Only the worst case scenario will you see acid reflux causing stomach cancer. If you're treated with the proper medications and do not eat any spicy foods, well you know, you should do alright. I strongly suggest you speak with your Dr. OK I know how you fell. You will be OK  (+ info)

Anemia with no improvement from iron pills?

I was diagnosed with anemia and leukopenia last May. (Leukopenia is a low white blood cell count) My doctor had my blood levels monitored every two months and had me started on iron pills. Ive been taken my iron pills and eating food that is rich in iron but there has been no improvement according to my blood tests. I have also noticed no improvement in terms of fatigue, weakness, and being lightheaded. Could there be any underlying condition to cause this? And, what else could I be doing to ease the symptoms that I have been experiencing.
(I have a doctor's appointment coming up, Im just posting this question here to get more ideas and other perspectives)
Thank you

You could be having problems with your digestive system such as celiac disease or a candida overgrowth. These can definitely cause anemia that never seems to get any better. The sites referenced below will give you some information about these health problems and their possible link to anemia.  (+ info)

I recently had a blood test done & i would like to know what is the meaning of these results as my Dr is away?

Hi im Sara, im a dentist and these are my results....Leukocytes 3500, red cell count 4.89, lymphocytes 46.3% and 1621/cmm, MCV 78.3 fl, MCH 26.7 pg, MCHC 34.1 and segmented neutrophils 37.4% and 1309 cmm.
The lab left a comment...its as follows...hypochromia for age, leukopenia, absolute neutropenia, and relative lymphocytosis.
Hope to get a reply soon please..thank you all
----------

Is there another Dr filling in for yours while your Dr is away? Most Drs have someone who fills in for them when they are away. If so, call and tell the receptionist you need to know what the results of your tests mean. If there is a nurse, she can tell you. If there is no nurse tell them you would like the Dr to call you to explain the results.  (+ info)

I THOUGHT it was Lupus.?

My GP told me I had lupus and referred me to a Rheumatologist. I had a positive ANA and a positive Anti-DNA and a low white blood cell count (leukopenia and neutropenia.) I also have severe pain in my hips and legs (which made me to go to Dr. in the first place.) The Rheum is not sure that I have it. Neg. for RA (which my mom has.) Now I'm back to square one. I'm happy that he doesn't think I have lupus, but I was also relieved to have an answer to my symptoms. What do you think?
----------

Be thankful. Lupus is an autoimmune disease and having one is not a good news.

Be careful!

I had a bad case of measles when I was younger......?

I now have depressed immunity (leukopenia) and my other cells are deficient as well. I have been to the doctor a number of times as you can imagine- worried about infection setting in etc. I have been fine since they had been checking a couple of years ago but just recently I keep coming down with infections, first it was 3 bouts of cystitis, then it was gastric flu a couple of months ago- now again, I have a bad cold with sickness...... whats going on? Could it be something to do with my younger years???
----------

You answered your own question. You yourself said you have leukopenia. Do you have pancytopenia or is it just your white count that's off. Ask your doctor about Neupogen and find out if you're a candidate for it.

Some protozoal, bacterial and viral infections (viral such as hepatitis, influenza and, yes, measles) can lead to leukopenia but so can primary bone marrow depression due to aplastic anemia.

Has your doctor said anything to you about a probable cause? If not, ask.
