i had a scan which showed my baby had hydronephrosis; i believe its because i have not drunk enough water?

the baby had hydronephrosis
----------

Is it you or the baby who has hydronephrosis? It's more common in pregnant women, actually, when the uterus enlarges so that it squeezes the ureters. In this case, it usually goes away after the baby is born.

If it is the baby, then your baby will be monitored with ultrasound scans to check that he or she is growing normally and that their kidneys are not getting too large. If the hydronephrosis is causing problems for your baby the fluid may need to be drawn off while the baby is in your womb. However, this is very uncommon. After your baby is born the hydronephrosis will be monitored with ultrasound scans and the other standard tests for hydronephrosis. Treatment will then depend on the cause.

Most people make a full recovery when hydronephrosis is detected and treated early on.

It's nothing to do with how much water you drink.  (+ info)

My unborn babyboy has unilateral hydronephrosis?

Has anyone ever had this problem? if so is it not a permanant thing? or can it be fixed permantly? I want to also transfer to another hospital which is in tx and im in hi.. do you think they would let me fly at 8 months??

Definition:
Unilateral hydronephrosis is swelling of one kidney due to a backup of urine.

See also: Bilateral hydronephrosis

Alternative Names:
Hydronephrosis
Causes, incidence, and risk factors:
Hydronephrosis is a condition that occurs with a disease and is not a disease itself. Treatment and prognosis for unilateral hydronephrosis depend what is causing the kidney swelling.

Conditions that are often associated with unilateral hydronephrosis include:

Acute unilateral obstructive uropathy
Chronic unilateral obstructive uropathy
Vesicoureteric reflux (backflow of urine from bladder to kidney)
Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)
Hydronephrosis that occurs without a known cause during pregnancy
Unilateral hydronephrosis occurs in approximately 1 in 100 people.

Symptoms:
Flank pain
Abdominal mass
Nausea and vomiting
Urinary tract infection
Fever
Dysuria
Increased urinary frequency
Increased urinary urgency
Note: Sometimes unilateral hydronephrosis does not have symptoms.
Signs and tests:
Unilateral hydronephrosis is usually identified with tests such as the following:

Intravenous pyelogram (IVP)
Isotope renography (radio-isotope scan of the kidneys)
Ultrasound of the kidneys or abdomen
CT scan of the kidneys or abdomen
Abdominal MRI

Treatment:
Treatment may include:

A ureteral stent (tube that allows the ureter to drain into the bladder)
A nephrostomy tube (allows the blocked urine to drain through the back)
Antibiotics for infections
Patients who have only one kidney, who have immune-compromising disorders such as diabetes or HIV, or who have received a transplant should be treated promptly.

Preventative antibiotics may be prescribed to decrease the risk of urinary tract infections in patients who have long-term hydronephrosis.

Expectations (prognosis):
Prolonged hydronephrosis results in the eventual loss of kidney function.

Complications:
If hydronephrosis is left untreated, the affected kidney may be permanently damaged. kidney insufficiency or kidney failure is rare with unilateral hydronephrosis because the other kidney usually functions normally. However, if the patient has only one functioning kidney, kidney failure will occur.

Calling your health care provider:
Call your health care provider if you have prolonged or severe flank pain, or if you suspect hydronephrosis.  (+ info)

Hydronephrosis and Pregnancy?

I'm 27 weeks pregnant and was in the hospital the other night with severe pains. They told me I have hydronephrosis which basicly means the baby is blocking the tube which gets rid of the waste from my kidney causing my kidney to swell. Dr says it wont resolve itself until the babys born. Has anyone else had this? And will this pain subside any??
----------

My sister had that, and she says the bigger the baby gets the more its blocked off and the pain does not subside, so sometimes she just had to go to the hospital and get pain releavers to help because she was in pain alot. It could be different with other people.  (+ info)

They need to decide what the cause is first. A mass could be benign or malignant. If it's hydro, then find out the cause.  (+ info)

ok from age 2 to 9 i strugged with Hydronephrosis and so during time i got teflon put in me for that?

ok from age 2 to 9 i strugged with Hydronephrosis and so during time i got teflon put in me for that?

and so during time i got teflon put in me for that and at the time i also had my urtha tube straightend as well. so i have been well with that since i was 9. Could i still get some of the symtoms still from that or have bad immune systom from that. cuase I am know 22
----------

Sometimes when the UPJ is narrowed over a relative long portion of the ureter as well the narrowed part is opened and a teflon tube is inserted as an internal splint and held with stitches.

Teflon is a very inert material and it is unlikely that it will provoke a bad immune response; et least it has not done so for the many years it has been there. As the years go by the risks of reaction decreases and ,by now, it must be negligible.

Good Luck

P.S.Of course,as has been recommended to you , you must drink plenty of water 'ad vitam eternam'.  (+ info)

What is Hydronephrosis?

Hydronephrosis
----------

come from latin, hyrdo meaning water, neph refering to the kindey osis meaning applying to. hence it is a dilated fluid filled kidney, usually from an obstructed ureter (the tube that goes from the kidney to the bladder) so urine backs up in the kidney and dilates it,  (+ info)

Does one feel extreme pain when passing a kidney stone near the lower back , front and near the loin areas?

I have a kidney stone of size 3mm, My Doc gave me some medicines(rather painkillers) and advised me to have at least 3 to 4 liters of water a day , avoid spinach and other green leafy vegetables and colas .I have also been diagnosed with mild hydronephrosis . The Doc says that its due to the stone . Essentially what I want to know is how does one know when a kidney stone is trying to pass.
----------

FEELS LIKE SOMEONE PULLING BARBED WIRE THROUGH IT.

AND STAYS THAT WAY FOR HOURS AFTER IT PASSES.  (+ info)

another hydronephrosis,? question?

if you have this from a past blocked ureteral stone does urine still drain at all?hydronephrosis,? because it was seen on my ct scan again and i had the stone blasted about 4 weeks ago.
it was seen before stone blasted and is still there wekks later.how do i know if urine is coming out of it at all?
----------

Hydronephrosis,is the stretching of the kidney due to a block, like a stone.if not removed the urine will back up in kidney thus causing the kidney to shrival up and cause renal failure. If its been four weeks Im assuming that you are urinating and I thinking you want to know if the kidney that was blocked is functioning. The way to find out would be having the doctor put in a dye and do another CT to see if you have drainage from both kidneys  (+ info)

Can anyone tell me what the results of my abdomen Ct scan means?

The radiologists impression was as follows: 1. Punctate nonobstructing calculus seen in the lower pole of the left kidney; no hydronephrosis seen on either side. 2. Top normal liver and spleen which could be constitutional although this finding is nonspecific. 3. Small nodularity, left adrenal gland, is most likely a benign adenoma.
----------

Your scan results mean the following:
1. You have a kidney stone on the left, but it is still in your kidney and not currently causing you any problems. Stones don't cause pain unless they are in your ureter (the tube that connects your kidney and bladder). You dont have hydronephrosis, which is when the urine collection system of the kidney becomes distended like a balloon causing pain.
2. Your liver and spleen size is at the higher end of the normal range. This shouldn't be anything for you to worry about.
3. There is a tiny nodule on your left adrenal gland (the gland that sits on top of your kidney and makes several normal hormones). They reported it is likely an adenoma, which is a benign (not cancer) growth, which is very common. Unless you were having symptoms of abnormally high blood pressure or other problems with various laboratory values, there is nothing that needs to be done for a small simple adenoma.  (+ info)
