How does skin infectios and tonsilitis/pharyngitis lead to post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis?

Tonsilitis/pharyngitis and skin infection caused by streptococcus pyogenes. How did the microorganism travel from the throat/skin to the kidneys and cause the disease?
----------

Untreated Strep throat can cause post-strep glomerulonephritis. Signs and symptoms usually begin 3 weeks after your sore throat. As far as your skin is concerned, you always have bacteria on it. Touch and and then fingers go in the mouth unknowingly. Untreated Strep can also cause rheumatic heart disease.. I had post strep throat glomerulonephritis twice while in I was in nursing school. Unfortuately, it kept me back a year. That was over 30 years ago. I don't know is there is now a strep kit on the market without a prescription, but there should be so people know whether or not they have strep and should be treated. So many sore throats are caused by viruses. When I was younger I had sore throats several times a year. If I ran to the doctor everytime I had a sore throat, I'd have been there all the time. I do know that there is a quick strep test available in a doctors office. 10 years ago, I finally had my tonsils removed. I haven't had a sore throat since. Unfortuantely, untreated strep can cause glomeruolnephritis and rheumatic heart disease.  (+ info)

What do my Celiac Disease Tissue Transglutaminase test IgA/IgG results mean?

I picked up my results today but the doctor was not in to explain them to me, can someone tell me what they mean? Tissue Transglutaminase - IgA - 7.6, IgG - 9.0
Thanks!
----------

Hmm. Did the paper give you a "range" on the side next to the totals? I do not know off the top of my head what the numbers mean bc its been years since I tested positve using blood work. Try this site Yahoo Health Groups "SillyYaks" and "foodallergynetwork". Look for a man named Phillip on SillyYaks, he's very helpful and knows a lot about the 'numbers' part of Celiac. Hopefully your doc will tell you soon!

What does having an IgA abnormal blood result mean in relation to coeliac screening?

My son recently had a blood screening test for coeliac disease and my GP has said the result is negative to coeliac but then went on to say that there was an abnormality in the second part of the screening re. IgA results. He has assured us that this is ok but I am unclear about what the results mean.

Could an IgA deficiency prevent my body from making antibodies in response to a vaccine?

I have received all normal vaccines, plus an additional MMR and Hep B series. I am still unable to make antibodies to measles and Hep B. I'm also constantly getting upper respiratory infections (4-5 a year). If anyone knows what else this could be it would be helpful! Thanks.
**Please no comments on how "bad" vaccines are for you. I'm in the medical field and don't feel like dealing with that**
----------

IgA is found in exocrine secretions, like breast milk that is passed on to the baby to help build immunity. Other secretions such as intestinal mucin, saliva and tears can contain IgA.

IgA is instrumental in in protecting mucosal surfaces surfaces from invading pathogens and virii.

I have seen folks that are IgA deficient, and I know that if they are to get a blood transfusion, the red cells must be washed to remove any IgA before administration.  (+ info)

Is IgA Neuropathy Treatable With Medical Marijuana?

I was recently diagnosed with a kidney disease called IgA Neuropathy. And I was wondering if it could be treated with Medical Marijuana. And if so, who would I contact about getting into the program?
----------

if you live in california, check medicannusa.org (or something around that, if that website doesnt work, just search medicann) or just go to the canorml.com website (if that doesnt work go to norml.com and go to the california branch) and they will have a directory for all the physicians and centers that will evaluate you.

btw, im not totally sure if medical marijuana treats your disease, but if u really want it, they can get you a card anyway. they really want you to have a card.

best of luck

What is the difference between Glomerulonephritis and Nephrotic Syndrone? (I'm a nursing student :) )?

I'm trying to study and I know that Glomerulonephritis can cause Nephrotic Syndrone..but what is the difference between the two? The s/s are the same, the diagnosis' are the same, treatments are the same..ahh. Please shed some light!
----------

nephrotic syndrome is a cluster of 4 things: proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, edema, and hyperlipidemia.
glomerulonephritis is an inflammation of the blood vessels in the kidneys. It may show through hematuria or protein in the urine. The syndrome is all of the above. vague but I hope it helps..  (+ info)
