can a car accident be a risk factor for developing a glioblastoma brain tumor?

No, but the CT scan done incidentally after a car accident might be the source of the accidental discovery of a glioblastoma tumor. If this was the case then the discovery could be a serendipitous finding that could lead to early and hopefully successful treatment.  (+ info)

Who discovered glioblastoma multiform?

Could you leave the link you found it at im doing a giant project and i can't seem to find out about it.
:) thanks

Very difficult question because glioblastoma multiforme or GBM has been known for at least a hundred years. But the one most responsible for the classification of brain tumors as GBM is probably Harvey Cushing, who is widely recognized as the father of modern neurosurgery. He wrote a nice classification system for these tumors in the 1920's.  (+ info)

HAS ANYONE KNOWS ABOUT THE GLIOBLASTOMA?

hello,
What is the median survival, there is any chance to heal ?
What is the best treatment in the world ? I made surgerry and radiation seance, i started Temodal last month for first time but i feel weak and fatigue. What about the chinese medecine, they have solution ?
Please any information help will be thank.
----------

The median survival is about 1 year; untreated it is about 3 months. There is no cure - anywhere. There are a few reasons for this. For one the tumor cells are very resistant to chemotherapy and other conventional therapies. The brain is susceptible to damage due to therapy and is limited in its capacity to repair itself. And many drugs cannot cross the blood brain barrier. However, about 1 in every 5,000-6,000 survives for decades.

I was at a tumor board about 2 weeks ago where we had a GBM case. Apparently, Los Angeles County (where I live) is one of the areas with highest number of long-term survivors. Although I didn’t ask why, I suspect it is due to research at UCLA. I have included a link for you; maybe they can be of some help. I hope so. Best wishes.

Grade 4 astrocytomas, frequently referred to as glioblastomas or glioblastoma multiform?

My dad 60 has just been daignosed with this cancer. He had the tumor removed on Monday and will start chemo and raidiation in about 3-4 weeks. He has to go to in-patient rehab, he has lost use of his right leg, and lacks balance and depth perception. He also has adult on-set diabetes which he has managed for 2 years by himself with diet and lifestyle changes. They say he will inevitebly die soon from this cancer and that he will not have pain many other people face when dealing with other cancers. My question is do you think that he, the doctors, or anyone will know when he is close to death or will he just all the sudden die at home without warning? He had siezures with this tumor those are under control now with meds. but I suppose they could come back with the regrowth of this tumor? I am concerned for my mom and my young brother (17).

He will probably lapse into coma some time before death, but this is not absolutely certain.  (+ info)

Anyone know about Glioblastoma grade IV?

My mom was diagnosed with Glioblastoma grade IV last month. I need help. Does anyone know of any meds she can take to help her get survive this and please share survival stories if you have any. My mom already had surgery and she couldn't use her left side and she had to go to rehab. When she was at rehab they said she was one of the fastest recoveries they have ever seen.

Please, I need to find any way to help her survive this any way she can and survival stories would help a lot and how you did would would be wonderful. Thanks!!! :)

I had a partial removal of a gbm grade four in December. I went through high dose radiation treatment for 6 1/2 weeks and have been on oral chemo since surgery (Temodar). I've been on anti seizure drugs since the discovery of my tumor and I've been on and off of steroids since surgery. Please feel free to e-mail me if you would like someone to talk to. Best of luck to you and your mom. I'm now on avastin treatments also to treat the swelling caused by prolonged exposure to radiation and steroids. Avastin is also being used as a clinical trial drug in many places (like md anderson-houston-one of the leading cancer research hospitals). It's believed to cut off the blood flow to the tumor causing it to slowly die off.  (+ info)

Are all cases of Glioblastoma multiforme fatal?

A good friend was diagnosed with grade for brain cancer (astrocytoma). It was in her brainstem, and they found it very quickly. It was removed and was about the size of a pea. She's 25 and in good health otherwise.

All the readings I've found say it's nearly ALWAYS terminal, but the cases they referece are HUGE terminals in the cerebrum or other parts of the brain.

Is it possible my friend's cancer will be less severe because they found it so early and it was still so small?
----------

You're talking apples and oranges here.
Glioblastoma Multiforme and astrocytoma are two DIFFERENT types of brain cancer. The prognosis can be very good for surviving astrocytoma, especially if it was only the size of a pea. Many astrocytomas are very slow-growing, as well.
Glioma is a very different animal, though. It is typically very aggressive and is fatal in over 95% of cases.  (+ info)

For those that have Glioblastoma, how long have you been diagnosed & what are you being told?

My wife's GBM was detected when she had a seizure, and from an MRI and CAT scan that followed. It's 13 months now since she was diagnosed. What she was told depended on the progression of the tumor, from her MRI. Initially, about 13 months ago (when the tumor was small--about half inch across) the doctors told her the disease was not curable and her prognosis depended on her reaction to the treatment. At about the 8th month when the tumor had grown unchecked and was about 2 inches across she was told he had about 2 to 4 months worst case and 8 months best case if she reacted positively to new types of chemo. Now, since she has reacted positively to a new chemo that is experimental and her tumor is receding they are non committal, but have stopped making predictions of 2 to 4 months. More recently the doctor said that ina bout 10% of cases (taking this specific treatment ?) she has seen the tumor recede almost entirely.

The statistics (from the Internet) are that 50% of patients succumb to the disease in about 12 months and about 5 % make it to two years.

I understand from doctors that some (few) individuals react to treatment much better than others, but no body knows why.

I'm sorry what I have written could be disturbing, and I hope you do not react adversely to this information. Good luck in your endeavors.  (+ info)

Is there any New Drug for Glioblastoma- brain tumor?

There are two drugs that were recently published in the August 1 2006 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology for use in recurrent Glioblastoma.

Good luck.  (+ info)

Glioblastoma Multiforme?

I recently lost my Mother to a Grade 4 Brain Tumor (Glioblastoma Multiforme) and am desperately seeking anyone that has been through the same situation either having had it yourself or one of your loved ones went through it.

Thanks in advance.
----------

I believe this type of brain tumor to be the ugliest to experience for both the patient and the family, as the prognosis is always poor.
I'm sorry you had to watch your mom die this way. You may be able to find a support group in your area by calling the neurosurgeon's office and asking the office staff. Or, go to cancer.org; you may find a link there.  (+ info)

Glioblastome-I'd like to know about glioblastoma survivors.how long they've lived if it's more than a year?

Oh my. If you know anything at all about this disease you should know that brain cancer is not staged and glioblastoma cannot be caught early. Los Angeles County has the largest population of long term survivors than anywhere else in the country. This disease has a median survival of 1 year. You may want to check UCLAs website as they do extensive research on this disease and they show real time information.  (+ info)
